Sweden stun the reigning champions USA in penalties

The USA will return home without a FIFA Women’s World Cup medal for the first time in their history after losing on penalties to Sweden

Lina Hurtig’s spot-kick sent Sweden to the quarter-finals, helped significantly by the brilliance of Zecira Musovic between the sticks.

It is the first time in the tournament’s history that the USA have been eliminated at this early stage

Sweden were behind in the penalties after Nathalie missed from the spot. Then came the turning point as Megan Rapinoe and Sophia Smith both missed from the spot for the USA.

Sweden will play Japan in the quarter-final. They will need to do much better in open play because Japan will most definitely convert some chances.
