With players withdrawing or failing dope tests, India's preparations have not been ideal but the team led by shotput player Tejinder Pal Singh Toor and long jumper Murali Sreeshankar is set to compete in the Asian Athletics Championships.

Shotput player Karanvir Singh failed an out-of-competition dope test and was dropped from the 54-member Indian team. At the same time, returning after three years due to injury, 51 in the National Inter-Province Championship last month. Anjali Devi, who won the gold in 400 meters by taking 48 seconds, also failed in the dope test.

A top official of the Indian Athletics Federation confirmed this. National record-holding relay runner Muhammad Anas Yahiya was also dropped under mysterious circumstances, though his name figured in the team selected on June 22. AFI has not given the reason for his exclusion. When asked about this, an official said that the Asian Athletics Federation does not allow alternatives. This means that Anas's name was not in the team sent within the deadline of 11 June.

Veteran long jumper Jesvin Aldrin, triple jumper Praveen Chitravel and javelin thrower Rohit Yadav pulled out due to injuries. In the absence of Aldrin, Sreeshankar will be a contender for gold in the long jump. He had finished third in the Paris stage of the Diamond League last month. Here is the full schedule of the Asian Athletics Championships 2023.
