India's hopes at the Asian Athletics Championships 2023 will hinge on shot putter Tajinderpal Singh Toor and long jumper Murali Sreeshankar. While Jyothi Yarraji will compete for the first time in the women's 100m hurdles. She is the Asian record holder. Jyothi had clocked 12.84 seconds and managed to clock under 13 seconds several times in this session. She will also compete in the 200m.
Long jumper Jeswin Aldrin, triple jumper Praveen Chithravel, and javelin thrower Rohit Yadav have pulled out of the competition due to injuries. Murali Sreesankar will have high hopes in Aldrin's absence. Last month, he had a performance of 8.81m. He is in contention for gold in the long jump. Sreeshankar's morale will also be high as he finished third in the Paris leg of the prestigious Diamond League.
On the other hand, Tajinderpal Singh Toor did well in the National Inter-State Championships with 21.77. Last time in 2019, in the championship held in Doha, he achieved golden success with 20.22 meters.
The Asian Athletics Championships 2023 is being held after a gap of four years after the 2021 edition in Hangzhou, China was canceled due to COVID-19. The previous edition, Doha 2019, saw India finish with 16 medals - two gold, seven silver, and seven bronze. India's best showing at the Asian Athletics Championships, however, was at Bhubaneswar in 2017. Indian athletes won 27 medals, including nine gold, that year.
India's 5000m specialist Parul Chaudhary did not run her best but managed to win the silver with a timing of 15:52. Priyanka Goswami won the silver in the 20km Race Walk with a time of 1:34:24. Vikash Singh wins gold in Men's 20km Race Walk, clocking 1:29:32.
The team of Rezoana Mallick Heena, Aishwarya Kailash Mishra, Jyothika Sri Dandi and Subha Venkatesan clocked 3:33.73 to clinch the silver in the 4*400 women's relay race. Jyothika and Aishwarya ran well to make up for the deficit created by Rezoana.
