Indian swimmer Siva Sridhar on Tuesday recorded the 'best Indian performance' in the 200m individual medley heat event of the Short Course FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) 2022 in Melbourne, Australia. Sridhar will also compete in the 100m individual medley on Thursday.
Although, Siva failed to qualify for the event's final. But he broke his own record of two minutes 02.42 seconds by clocking one minute and 59.80 seconds to complete the heat. The 22-year-old Indian swimmer finished 30th in the competition out of 38 participants. Only the top eight made the cut for the final. Sridhar will also compete in the 100m individual medley on Thursday.
Shiva, who hails from Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu, grabbed everyone's attention recently by winning two gold medals at the Khelo India University Games. India's previous national record in the 200m individual medley was 2:02.42s, also achieved by Siva Sridhar. Earlier in June, Siva won the bronze medal at Singapore National Swimming Championships in the 200m individual medley with a timing of 02:06.69s.
Meanwhile, Chahat Arora will participate in the women's 100m and 50m breaststroke events on Wednesday and Saturday, respectively. She holds India's national record in both events. At the same time, South Africa's Matthew Sates won the championship in 1:50.15s with USA's Carson Foster (1:50.96) and Canada's Finlay Knox (1:51.04) winning silver and bronze, respectively. The FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) 2022, which is the 16th edition of the competition, will conclude on Sunday.
