In recognition of Kishore Jena's achievement, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced a reward of Rs 25 lakh, according to a press release from the Chief Minister's Office on Monday.
While the nation is celebrating Neeraj Chopra's historic gold medal win at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik recognized the efforts of a lesser-known athlete from his state. Odisha's javelin star Kishor Jena became the first sportsperson from the state to represent India in the final of the World Athletics Championships in Budapest and finished a commendable fifth position. Jena finished fifth in the championship final with a throw of 84.77m. It was also Jenna's personal best throw.
Kishore Jena might have missed a medal in the men's javelin final at the World Athletics Championships 2023, but he has won millions of hearts back home by registering a career-best performance.
"Kishore showcased remarkable prowess in javelin throwing, achieving a commendable fifth-place finish. He achieved a new personal best with a throw covering a distance of 84.77 metres, highlighting his exceptional performance on the global stage." The release read.
Kishore's participation is a remarkable feat for the athlete and a historic achievement in the sports history of Odisha, it added. Commending the indomitable spirit of Kishore Jena, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said, "Kishore Jena's remarkable journey and exceptional performance at the World Athletics Championship in Budapest have not only brought glory to our state and nation but also inspired many athletes for years to come."

This was the first time that three Indian athletes made it to the finals of a track and field event. Apart from Neeraj Chopra and Kishore Jena, DP Manu also made it to the finals of the men's javelin throw.
