World Athletics unveiled the names of the 10 nominated for the title of the men's World Athlete of the Year on Thursday

World Athlete of the Year 2022 (Men) nominees have been announced

After the women on Wednesday, World Athletics, the international athletics federation, unveiled the names of the 10 nominated for the title of the men's World Athlete of the Year on Thursday. The announcement comes as the voting process begins this week for the various annual trophies awarded by the World Athletics Body. The ten male athletes in the running were selected by an international panel of experts from the six continental confederations.

The nominees for 2022 Men's World Athlete of the Year are (in alphabetical order):

1. Kristjan Ceh (SLO)

  • Slovenian Kristjan Ceh is the World discus champion.
  • He won the Diamond League discus tournament after throwing a national record 71.27m on the circuit in Birmingham.
  • He is a European discus silver medallist.

2. Alison dos Santos (BRA)

  • The Brazilian Alison dos Santos is also on the list after his world title in the 400m hurdles.
  • He is also the Diamond League 400m hurdles champion.
  • He ran a world-leading South American record of 46.29.

3. Mondo Duplantis (SWE)

  • Mondo Duplantis is the champion of the both World pole vault indoors and outdoors.
  • He is also the Diamond League and European pole vault champion.
  • He improved his world record to 6.19m and 6.20m indoors, and then 6.21m outdoors.

4. Soufiane El Bakkali (MAR)

  • The Moroccan Soufiane El Bakkali, world champion in the 3,000m steeplechase.
  • He is also the champion of the Diamond League 3000m steeplechase.
  • He was unbeaten in 2022, running a world-leading 7:58.28 in Rabat.

5. Grant Holloway (USA)

  • Grant Holloway is the world champion in the 110m hurdles.
  • He is the champion of the 60m hurdles in Hall as well.
  • He is also the Diamond League 110m hurdles champion.

6. Jakob Ingebrigtsen (NOR)

  • Jakob Ingebrigtsen, a compatriot of Warholm, is present after his European titles in the 1,500 and 5,000m and his world title in the 5,000m.
  • He is also the European 1500m and 5000m champion.
  • He is the Diamond League 1500m champion in a world-leading 3:29.02.

7. Eliud Kipchoge (KEN)

  • Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge is on the list after breaking his marathon world record at the Berlin Marathon.
  • He improved his world marathon record to 2:01:09.
  • He also won the Tokyo Marathon this year.

  • He is also the Diamond League 200m champion.
  • He ran a world-leading national record of 19.31 to move to third on the world all-time list.

9. Anderson Peters (GRN)

  • Grenadian Anderson Peters is the world champion in the javelin throw.
  • He is also the Commonwealth javelin silver medallist.
  • He threw a world-leading NACAC record of 93.07m, moving to fifth on the world all-time list.

10. Pedro Pichardo (POR)

  • The Portuguese Pedro Pichardo is the World triple jump champion with a world-leading leap of 17.95m.
  • He is also World indoor triple jump silver medallist.
  • He is the European triple jump champion as well.

The five finalists will be known following a vote by the International Federation Council (which counts for 50%), the World Athletics Family (25%), and the public (25%). They can vote online via the World Athletics social networks. Voting will end on Monday, October 31. The winners of the Men's World Athlete of the Year will be revealed by World Athletics in early December.

World Athletics has unveiled via a press release the list of ten nominees for the still coveted title of Women's World Athlete of the Year. The announcement comes as the voting process begins this week for the various annual trophies awarded by the World Athletics Body.   • Nigeria's Tobi Amusan won the gold medal in the 100m hurdles with a new record on the final day of the World Athletics Championships 2022.
  • She is also the champion of the Diamond League, Commonwealth, and African 100m hurdles.
  • She set a record of 12.12 in the 100m hurdles.

2. Chase Ealey (USA)

The five finalists will be chosen after a three-step process. The World Athletics Council and the athletics "family" (athletes, media, experts, etc.) will vote by e-mail, while fans will be able to participate in the voting on social networks. The Board's vote will count for 50% of the result, with the other two groups each counting for 25%. Voting will end on Monday, October 31. The winners of the Women's World Athlete of the Year will be revealed by World Athletics in early December.

The Norwegian athlete Karsten Warholm has been crowned the male world athlete of the year; his astonishing feat in the 400m hurdles, breaking the world record twice. Followed by taking the Olympic gold in one of the greatest races of all time.

Warholm had an impressive enough year after his first race; when he finally broke American Kevin Young's 1992 46.78 seconds world record with a 46.70 run in Oslo. During the Olympic final in Tokyo, he clocked an astonishing 45.94.

Presenting the award at a virtual ceremony in Monaco, World Athletics President Sebastian Coe said: "We were rendered speechless by your run."

What did Warholm say on winning the World Athlete of the Year?

Warholm: "I'm so happy for this. When I first saw the time I thought it must be a mistake. It was a very intense race, I always go out hard and never know what's going on behind me.

"When I realised the time I thought 'I'll take it."
