WTT Star Contender: Harmeet, Sutirtha, and Yashaswini make it to the singles main draw

Three Indian players made it to the singles main draw of WTT Star Contender Goa for the first time in Panjim on Tuesday.

Three Indian players made it to the singles main draw of WTT Star Contender Goa for the first time in Panjim on Tuesday. Commonwealth Games medallist Harmeet Desai in men's singles while teenager Yashaswini Ghorpade and Tokyo Olympian Sutirtha Mukherjee made it to the main draw in women's singles.

A total of three qualifying rounds were held in singles while two rounds were played in doubles. The table tennis tournament is being held at Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Indoor Stadium in Goa. A total of 200 players from 30 countries are participating in the WTT Star Contender Goa 2023.

Yashaswini is the youngest among these three players in the WTT Star Contender 2023. She entered the main draw after defeating two South Korean players ranked higher than her. She first defeated world number 103 Cheonhui Joo 11-7 11-6 9-11 11-8. After that, she defeated world number 104 Nayeong Kim 11-6 1-11 5-11 11-5 11-7. Yashaswini's world ranking is currently 196. Yashaswini will take on world number 38 Miyu Nagasaki of Japan.

The next Indian to make it to the main draw was Sutirtha. Her ranking is 147 in the world. She defeated Chinese Taipei's Li Yu-Jhun (world ranking 92) 3–0 (11–9, 11–8, 11–6) in the first round. She then defeated South Korea's world number 107 Eunhye Lee 3–1 (11–1). 9 6-11 11-6 11-8). Sutirtha will take on compatriot Suhana Saini in the main draw on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Harmeet Desai, a member of India's gold medal-winning men's team at the Commonwealth Games 2022 is the only Indian to qualify for the main draw from the men's singles qualifiers for the WTT Star Contender 2023. He defeated Germany's world number 99 Fanbo Meng in the first round. After that, he defeated Argentina's Horacio Cifuentes, world number 84, 3-2 (11-7 9-11 11-7 8-11 11-5). However, Harmeet Desai, ranked 141st, will have his task cut out against India's top-ranked table tennis player Sathiyan Gnanasekaran, world No. 41, in the men's singles main draw on Saturday.

The Ultimate Table Tennis 2025 season is set to take place from May 29 to June 15 at EKA Arena in Ahmedabad, the organisers announced on Friday.

This will be the sixth season of India's premier table tennis league, featuring eight teams with top Indian and international table tennis stars. The defending champions, Goa Challengers, will aim for a third consecutive title.

The tournament which started in 2017, has seen Indian Table Tennis stars like Sharath Kamal, Manika Batra, Sathiyan Gnanasekaran, Manav Thakkar and Sutirtha Mukherjee, alongside international stars like Olympic silver medallist Petrissa Solja AND Tiago Apolónia

8 teams will be divided into two groups and every team will have six players in their squad. Each tie will have five matches. Last season. Goa Challengers defended their title against Dabang Delhi TTC in Chennai.

Manika Batra creates history- First Indian to reach the WTT quarterfinals

The World Number 30 Manika Batra stunned the table tennis arena by defeating World Number 14 Bernadette Scoz from Romania, becoming the first ever Indian to reach the WTT quarterfinals in France.

A four-time Commonwealth medalist and an Olympian, Manika Batra, survived a 5 point defeat in the second set, winning the rest two later. On Friday, against Scoz, she saved two game points in the third game to keep herself ahead. finally sealing the tie in the next game, converting her second march point.

Manika won 3-1 (11-9, 6-11, 13-11, 11-9) in 29 minutes against the eighth-seeded Scoz in a round-16 match. Nevertheless, Manika enjoys a safe lead against Scoz- 6-5.

Manika Batra to face Tianyi

Manika Batra will play the quarterfinal on Saturday. There she will meet the World number 21 Qian Tianyi from China.

Tianyi reached the quarterfinal after defeating Wang Yidi by 3-0 (11-7, 11-9, 13-11) in another R-16 match.

In the first round, Manika's first prey was USA's Lily Zhang, against whom she won in a straight set of 3-0 (11-4, 11-8, 12-10)

The other Indian in queue in women's singles, Sreeja Akula, however, got defeated by World No. 13 Adriana Diaz of Puerto Rico. Diaz defeated Akula by 2-3 (11-6, 7-11, 1-11, 11-8, 8-11)

Olympian Sreeja Akula bows out of Ultimate Table Tennis 2024 due to stress fracture

Paris Olympics 2024 participant, World No. 22 table tennis player, Sreeja Akula has been ruled out of the Ultimate Table Tennis 2024 with a stress fracture, UTT announced on Monday. The tournament will be held in Chennai from August 22 to September 7.

“I’m sorry to share that I have been diagnosed with a stress fracture and on my doctor’s advice, I’ll need to rest for six weeks, which unfortunately means I won’t be able to participate in UTT 2024,” Akula said in a statement.

Reached pre-quarterfinals in Paris Olympics

Recently, Sreeja Akula participated in the Paris Olympics where she reached the pre-quarterfinals of the women’s singles event, becoming only the second Indian after Manika Batra.

The 26-year-old defeated Christina Kallberg 11-4, 11-9, 11-7, 11-8, 4-0 in the first round. In the third round, Sreeja delivered another stellar performance when she beat Zeng Jian of Singapore 9-11, 12-10, 11-4, 11-5, 10-12, 4-2. She, however, went down fighting against World No. 1 Sun Yingsha in the quarterfinals 10-12, 10-12, 8-11, 3-11, 0-4.

First Indian to win WTT Contender

Apart from that, Sreeja Akula also became the first Indian to win a singles title at the WTT Contender level by finishing at the top at the WTT Contender Lagos. She is also a gold medallist at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and a double gold medallist at the 2019 South Asian Games.

Sreeja was drafted to the Jaipur Patriots for UTT 2024 but in a statement released on Monday, the 26-year-old informed that she will need a resting period of six weeks. Sreeja would be replaced by the U19 Youth National Champion and UTT debutant Nithyashree Mani.

Wrestling | Antim Panghal's campaign ends

Turkey’s Zeynep Yetgil beat Indian wrestler Antim Panghal 10-0 in the women’s 53kg freestyle round of 16 bout.

 

The Turkish wrestler, however, crashed out in the quarter-final against Annika Wendle of Germany, who secured a victory by fall.

 

Antim, as a result, will not feature in the repechage round, ending her Paris 2024 campaign.

Indian women's javelin thrower, Annu rani did not breach the qualification standard of 62.00m or finish at least among the top 12 athletes overall.

Annu will not feature in the women’s javelin throw final at Paris 2024.
