Shreyas Iyer will not be a part of the playing eleven in the Asia Cup 2023 Super 4 match between the Indian cricket team and the Sri Lankan cricket team on September 12. BCCI confirmed the news on Tuesday.
The sudden back injury Iyer suffered is troubling him a lot. He is currently under the supervision of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) managers, the National Cricket Academy (NCA) staff, and the team management at the local level in Colombo.
In the last match against Pakistan, KL Rahul became a part of the Asia Cup 2023 squad in Iyer's place. According to a Cricbuzz report, sources said that Shreyas Iyer is feeling better but is yet to fully recover from back spasm. He has been adviced rest by the BCCI Medical Team. Iyer has not travelled with the team to the stadium today for Asia Cup 2023 Super 4 match against Sri Lanka.
Captain Rohit Sharma had said during the toss that the problem was discovered during the warm-up and due to this Iyer had to be dropped from the team. The decision to include Rahul in the team was taken just 5 minutes before the toss.
Rohit said of Rahul, who replaced Iyer in the playing XI against Pakistan, "And then KL, to return from injury and then find out 5 minutes before the toss that he's playing, and to perform the way he did, it shows the mindset of the player". It is expected that Iyer will be available for selection for the later games in the Asia Cup 2023. Moreover, there is no plan to send him back at this stage.
