"He is a young boy who is learning all the time": Dravid on Umran Malik

Umran Malik had impressed everyone with his pace in IPL 2022, bowling consistently in the vicinity of 150kph and picking up 22 wickets from 14 games. He provided Sunrisers Hyderabad, his IPL franchises, with regular wickets in the middle overs but might have to wait for India's cap.

Umran Malik is an "exciting" prospect but he may not get a chance to represent India straightaway. That's essentially what head coach Rahul Dravid said two days out from the first T20I against South Africa in Delhi.

"Watching Umran in the nets even yesterday, he has got that pace. He is a young boy who is learning all the time. He is getting better and improving all the time. The more games he is able to play, the better he is going to get."

Head coach Rahul Dravid said

"From our perspective, I am very happy to have someone like him in the mix. We just have to see how much playing time we will be able to give him. We also have to be realistic, we have got a really large squad. It's not possible to give everyone playing XI time.

"I am certainly someone who likes to have a bit of consistency and give people time and let them feel settled in the position. So it's a question of seeing how much playing time you can give people like Umran, and Arshdeep  who is another exciting, brilliant guy." Dravid expressed.

Dravid hinted that India may start with Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Harshal Patel, and Avesh Khan before trying out Malik and Arshdeep

"Obviously we have got a few experienced guys who have been with us before - Harshal and Bhuvi, and Avesh played a few games in the last series as well.

"So there are a few people who have been playing, but it's nice and exciting to have a couple of young guys in the mix as well. As I said, it has given us an opportunity to broaden our pool, look at a few more players and see what they can do."

Head coach Rahul Dravid said

Dravid was also pleased with Kuldeep Yadav's return to form in the IPL

Dravid was also pleased with Kuldeep Yadav's return to form in the IPL as the wrist spinner is someone who can "turn the game around" in the middle overs with his wicket-taking ability.

After a couple of underwhelming seasons, Kuldeep seemed to be bowling a touch quicker through the air. He picked up 21 wickets at IPL 2022 and was named the Player of the Match on four occasions.

"Obviously, he had that injury unfortunately in the last IPL, and in fact even without playing any first-class cricket, we got him back into the mix because we see the quality," Dravid said. "He has been a terrific performer. We know that the kind of quality he brings people find very difficult to read. He is a wicket-taker. So there are a lot of positives to having Kuldeep in the group.

"Obviously he is one of the really exciting options that we have, along with Ravi Bishnoi who has come and done really well. Yuzi <Yuzvendra Chahal> has really shown his class over the last six months for us and for his IPL team, both the last two is that he has played.

Axar Patel is again an allrounder. So there are a lot of options and sometimes you have to balance out those options as well. But very nice to see Kuldeep back again and bowling. And we know that at times he is someone who can turn the game around with wickets in those middle overs." Dravid added.

Team News

Sunrisers Hyderabad

Runners-up last season, SRH will be aiming to start strong at home on what’s expected to be a flat, high-scoring track at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.

With Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, and Heinrich Klaasen in the top order, the hosts are capable of posting record-breaking totals. Abhishek, fresh off a 135-run blitz in a recent T20I, is expected to continue his fine form, while the return of all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy strengthens the middle.

The bowling attack, led by skipper Pat Cummins, includes the seasoned Mohammed Shami, spin ace Adam Zampa, and death-overs specialist Harshal Patel — making this a formidable unit across all phases.

Rajasthan Royal

Rajasthan Royals are hampered by the unavailability of captain Sanju Samson as a fielder or keeper due to a finger injury. He’s expected to bat as an Impact Player, with Riyan Parag leading the side.

Without Jos Buttler, RR’s batting leans heavily on Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shimron Hetmyer.

Their bowling attack, led by Jofra Archer and Wanindu Hasaranga, has the potential but lacks depth on paper compared to SRH.

Having dominated the Royals last season — including a crucial win in Qualifier 2 — Sunrisers will be looking to extend their supremacy in what promises to be a high-octane afternoon clash.

Ravindra Jadeja is easily the most well-rounded cricketer India has ever produced. A major portion of his success needs to be credited to the IPL, as the Saurashtra superstar built his international career by learning in the IPL under cricketing greats like Shane Warne, MS Dhoni, Stephen Fleming, and others.

Apart from missing the 2010 season, Ravindra Jadeja has played all the other seasons with him representing Chennai Super Kings (CSK) since 2012. He has played 240 games taking 160 wickets with the ball with an average of 30.40 and an economy rate of 7.62.

His generational fielding skills have also shined, as the 36-year-old has taken 103 catches in the competition, making him ‘The Ultimate All-rounder’ as he is the only player to have 1000+ runs, 100+ wickets, and 100+ catches, fulfilling his 3-dimensional abilities to the fullest.

Though 108 of these wickets have come in death overs where batters try to score at a faster pace and often get out in the process, still his overall numbers are too good to be questioned.

Malinga started playing for Mumbai Indians in the 2009 season, and last appeared in the 2019 season. His final over in the 2019 final was enough to prove his greatness even at that stage of his career.

He played his last IPL match in the 2022 season for Chennai.
