Rathnayake came to the crease when Sri Lanka were under real pressure at 7-113. However, the test debutant made sure to hit a 53-run partnership to take Sri Lanka to a respectable total.
Post Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya de Silva's dismissal, Rathnayake started hitting the boundaries to score his maiden test fifty. He got out on 72 from 135 balls and took Sri Lanka's total to 236.
With his 72, Milan Rathnayake became the batter with the highest run on test debut batting at No. 9. He surpassed Balwinder Sandhu's record of 71 scored against Pakistan in Hyderabad.
