Final matches are always the most important and entertaining matches in any tournament. The hard work of the entire tournament goes in vain if the cricketer cannot perform well in the finals. Finals are that matches that can either build or destroy the cricketer’s reputation. India is ranked first in the ICC test championship. The world test championship is taking place on 18th June 2021 between India and New Zealand. In the past few decades, the performance of Indian cricketers is phenomenal. Be it batsmen or bowlers or all-rounders, Indians are leaving their marks everywhere they play. For the past couple of years, Indian batsmen are ruling the cricket world. From breaking records to creating new records they are always on the top-ranked lists. So let’s check out the highest scorers for India in ICC finals.
1. Krishnamachari Srikkanth- 1983 World Cup
The former cricketer made his debut at the international matches at the age of 21. He opened for the team and batted aggressively to destroy the opposition bowling lineup. He played like a storm- came to the ground and smashed balls using innovative styles. But his hard-hitting nature has caused troubles a lot of times. He often got out because of this reason. His ambushing nature was quite evident in the 1983 world cup. He was the top scorer in the finals and scored 38 runs. The former cricketer created a record of being the first Indian cricketer who scored a half-century as well as took 5 wickets in an ODI match against New Zealand in 1988. He was undoubtedly a great batsman but never consistent. Due to his inconsistency, he was dropped out of the team but he made a comeback once again in 199. His comeback was not strong enough to stick around in the team. Therefore, he retired from all forms of cricket in 1933 at age of 33.
2. Sourav Ganguly- 2000 Champions Trophy
Sourav Ganguly is probably the only cricketer who was loved by a huge population and at the same time hated by so many people. In his way to strengthening the Indian cricket team, he contributed everything to the team. His contribution was evident by his performances on the field as a batsman, a bowler, and the captain of the team. He is undoubtedly one of the biggest pillars of the Indian cricket team. The former captain scored a knock of 117 at the 2000 champions trophy which is the highest by an Indian player at that final match.
3. Virender Sehwag- 2003 World Cup
Virender Sehwag, the legend, is considered to be one of the most aggressive cricketers of all time. His affinity towards smashing boundaries and ambushing bowlers was enjoyable for the audience. His presence on the field was a sense of relaxation for the cricket lovers. He was a part of 2 ICC finals- the 2003 World Cup and the 2011 World Cup. His performance in the 2011 World Cup was horrible and disheartening but he is the Indian player to score the most runs in the 2003 World Cup with 82 runs against Australia.
4. Gautam Gambhir- 2007 T20 World Cup & 2011 World Cup
Who doesn’t remember the night of 2nd May 2011? This was the date when India won the World Cup for the second time. When legends like Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag got out, Gautam Gambhir was the cricketer who took the responsibility of changing the match into a successful one. He was later joined by the former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Gambhir’s performance in both the 2007 T20 world cup final and 2011 world cup final was impactful and prolific for the team. No points for guessing that he was the highest run-scorer as an Indian player in both the final matches. He scored 75 in the 2007 T20 World Cup final and 97 in the 2011 World Cup final.
5. Virat Kohli- 2013 Champions Trophy & 2014 T20 World Cup
This was the time when Virat Kohli was creating havoc everywhere. He created a long-lasting impact on the team by playing exceptionally well during this time. He was always on the lookout for runs and did not misuse any opportunities he got to destroy the opposition bowling lineup. His reign is continuing in the Indian cricket team till today. He became the top scorer from the Indian team in both the 2013 champions trophy final in the 2014 T20 world cup final. He scored 43 in the 2013 Champions Trophy finals and 77 in the latter.
6. Hardik Pandya- 2017 Champions Trophy
The 2017 Champions trophy final was quite a sorrowful day for the Indians. The Indian cricket team played hard enough to reach the finals and played against Pakistan. But they failed to justify themselves in the finals and lost the match against Pakistan. The performances of the top-order batsman and middle-order batsmen were horrible. But the only cricketer that shone away in the entire match was Hardik Pandya. The all-rounder smashed the balls and scored 76 runs off 43 balls which was the highest by an Indian player.
