The two-Test series was initially slated to begin before the T20s. However, the BCCI reversed the decision in response to a request from Sri Lanka Cricket. According to the BCCI, "Sri Lanka will first play the T20I series comprising three matches followed by a two-match Test series, which will be a part of the ICC World Test Championship, 2021-23."

Whilst the sequence of the formats has changed, the locations of the games have shifted as well. The first T20I of Sri Lanka's tour of India will now be staged in Lucknow, which had previously been picked to conduct the third and final T20I. Conversely, Dharamsala will stage the second and third T20Is, since Mohali has been ruled out for the smallest format.

Further modification in the venue is that the first Test will take place in Mohali on March 4. Also, it will be followed by the second and concluding IND vs Sl Test match in Bengaluru, which would be a day-night affair.
