IND vs SL Test Squad: Rahane and Pujara's career hangs while Saha and Ishant's careers nearly are over

4 senior players were dropped from the Indian Test team as BCCI announced the test squad for the IND vs SL series.

Feb 19, 2022, 12:56 PM3 min read

BCCI Chief selector Chetan Sharma held a press conference that had many signs where team India will be heading in the next few years. Rohit Sharma was made the test captain whereas Jasprit Bumrah was made the vice-captain for the series against Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, it is certain that there might be a curtain to Wriddhiman Saha and Ishant Sharma's test career. Both the veteran players have been dropped from the IND vs SL Test Squad.

In the press conference, Chetan Sharma said, "Rohit was the clear choice for the leadership. He is our No.1 test player currently". As Rohit became the new test captain, India still looking for a permanent deupty. Rishabh Pant was made the vice-captain in the T20I series against West Indies but have been sacked from the position. In addition, KL Rahul's injury forced the management to go with Jasprit Bumrah as Rohit's deputy.

Is it over for Rahane, Pujara, Saha and Ishant?

Meanwhile, team India senior batters Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane was dropped from the Test squad after a long run of off-form. Even Rahane's ton in the Ranji Trophy could not save his place in the team. Meantime, Pujara's duck in the same match did not help him as well. Along with them, BCCI has asked Ishant Sharma and Wriddhiman Saha to play Ranji Trophy. "Otherwise how will we know if they are fit enough to play," Chetan Sharma added.

Shreyas Iyer and Hanuma Vihari might get a nod in the middle order. However, it will be interesting to see if the management tries either Gill or Mayank Agarwal in the middle order. Meantime, it is quite obvious that BCCI does not want to make a 37-year old wicket-keeper their second choice keeper. Thus, Saha's career might be over as he has opted himself out of the Ranji Trophy as well. On the other hand, Mohammed Siraj's recent performances might have compelled the management to look beyond Ishant Sharma and groom young blood into the dressing room.

IND vs SL: Who is Saurabh Kumar?

Another new pointer from the press conference was that UP's slow left-arm orthodox Saurabh Kumar has been included in the squad. The spinner was one of the net bowlers in India's tour of England. Till now in his 46 First-class matches he has taken 196 wickets at an average of 24.15. Meanwhile, he is handy with the bat as well. He averages 29.11 with the bat in the first-class arena. He gets a place as Axar Patel is still recovering from the injury. Although it will be tough for him to get a place in the team with a full fit Ravindra Jadeja in the team.

IND vs SL: Full Test Squad

Rohit Sharma (C), Mayank Agarwal, Priyank Panchal, Virat Kohli, Shreyas, Hanuma Vihari, Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, KS Bharat, Ashwin ( subject to fitness), Ravindra Jadeja, Jayant Yadav, Kuldeep, Jasprit Bumrah (VC), Shami, Siraj, Umesh Yadav, Saurabh Kumar.

Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, along with Nitish Kumar Reddy have been ruled out of the ENG vs IND, 4th test in Manchester. Here is the possible lineup of the Indian cricket team in the fourth test.

ENG vs IND, 4th test: Three Indian players ruled out, what could be possible Indian lineup? | sportzpoint.com

Indian cricket team management suffered major setbacks ahead of the ENG vs IND, 4th test in Manchester, starting from Wednesday. Two Indian pacers, Akash Deep and Ashdeep Singh, have been ruled out of the 4th test along with all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy.

With three players already ruled out due to injuries, Shubman Gill and company will have to find solutions within the squad to name a strong playing XI at Old Trafford.

Left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh, who was hit on his bowling hand, needed stitches. As per the reports of the Indian Express on Sunday, the Medium Pacer will need at least 10 days to recover. This has already ruled him out of the fourth test, and he is unlikely to return for the final test starting on 31st July.

As per the same report by The Indian Express, another pacer, Akash Deep, who was India's hero in their first-ever Test win in Birmingham, has issues with his groin and back. The Indian team management does not want to take risks with his injuries, and thus, he will be monitored as a precaution.

On the other hand, Hindustan Times reported that all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy suffered an injury during the gym session on Sunday. So he is also ruled out of the fourth test at Old Trafford Stadium.

In the situation where India are trailing by 1-2 in the Test series and needs to win the 4th test, to be in contention to win the series, Gautam Gambhir and company will have to dig deep to find solutions.

Here are the solutions India can go for during the 4th test.

#1 Bumrah, Siraj, Shardul, and who?

With both Akashdeep and Arshdeep Singh being ruled out, there is certainty that Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammad Siraj will be India's leading pacers in the fourth test. Although our questions on the workload management of both those pacers, they will have to be at their best if India wants to bring balance to the series.

Now, with Nitish Kumar Reddy's injury, India will have to go back to Shardul Thakur, who played in the first test in Leeds. The Mumbai all-rounder only scored 4 runs and took two wickets in that match.

But if India wants to go for another pacer, they will have the option of Prasidh Krishna and newcomer Anshul Kamboj. Krishna, who did not do very well in the first two test matches, might not be brought back. In that case, Kamboj, who has done well in the first-class games he has played so far, is likely to get his test cap.

#2 Should Kuldeep Yadav play?

Should Kuldeep Yadav play? Here is India's possible lineup in ENG vs IND, 4th test, Manchester | sportzpoint.com
Kuldeep last played a test match in 2024. Image | BCCI on X

Now, this has been an inclusion that Indian fans have been waiting for from the first test. Kuldeep, who last featured in test matches for India in 2024 against New Zealand at home, can bring the ex-factor in the bowling lineup. But this will leave the batting lineup a bit thin.

Since Gautam Gambhir has always looked to go for that added batting cushion, it will be hard for Kuldeep to find his place. Even if he plays, will India look to sacrifice Washington Sundar? This would be a very hard question to answer.

#3 Jurel to keep, Pant to play as a specialist batter

Along with these three injuries, we had already reported that Rishabh Pant has not recovered fully from the finger injury he suffered during the Lord's Test. In that case, Dhruv Jurel, who kept wicket at Lord's, is likely to play as a wicket keeper while Rishabh Pant could play as only a specialist batter.

If Jurel comes in, India can leave Shardul out and bring Kuldeep Yadav into the playing XI. However, it will only depend on the pitch condition.

Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Shubman Gill (C), Rishabh Pant, Dhruv Jurel (wk), Washington Sundar, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj

Asia Cup in doubt as BCCI denies to visit Bangladesh for ACC's AGM

The 2025 Asia Cup faces significant uncertainty as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has threatened to boycott any resolutions if the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) Annual General Meeting (AGM) proceeds in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

The meeting, scheduled for July 24, has become a flashpoint amid heightened political tensions between India and Bangladesh, prompting the BCCI to refuse to attend if the venue is not changed from Dhaka.

ACC does not want to change the venue

According to multiple reports, including ANI and India Today, the BCCI has formally communicated its stance to both the ACC and its chairman, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Mohsin Naqvi, requesting a change of venue.

However, these requests have gone unanswered, with Naqvi reportedly adamant on holding the meeting in Dhaka, a move seen by India as exerting undue pressure to influence Asia Cup-related decisions.

India threatens to withdraw from the Asia Cup 2025

India, the defending champions and host of the upcoming six-nation T20 Asia Cup, likely scheduled for September, is not alone in its boycott.

Cricket boards from Sri Lanka, Oman, and Afghanistan have also expressed reservations about attending the meeting in Bangladesh, raising questions about the ACC's ability to make valid decisions without key members present.

Compounding the tension is the recent postponement of India's white-ball tour of Bangladesh from August 2025 to September 2026, underscoring the diplomatic strain. India refused to play in Pakistan during the 2023 Asia Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy, with matches relocated to neutral venues like Sri Lanka and Dubai, respectively. The Men in Blue went on to win both tournaments.

There have been speculative reports that BCCI might withdraw from both the Women’s Emerging Teams Asia Cup in Sri Lanka and the Men’s Asia Cup, but BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia has denied these claims, calling them "speculative and imaginary".

ENG vs IND: What are the changes in Indian team you would like to see in fourth test?

For the ENG vs IND match at Old Trafford, Indian team management could make multiple changes to the playing XI. Let's have a look.

ENG vs IND: What are the changes in Indian team you would like to see in fourth test?

Despite a great fight on the last day at Lord's, India suffered a heartbreak defeat by 22 runs in the third Test against England. Along with this, the discussion has intensified about the batting order of the team, especially the batting at number 3.

After the defeat at Lord's, the Indian men’s cricket team would like to come up with a big show in the fourth Test to level the series. The fourth red-ball match of the ongoing ENG vs IND five-match series will be played at Old Trafford in Manchester from July 23 to 27. For the match at Old Trafford, Indian team management could make multiple changes to the playing XI.

Sudharsan may replace Karun Nair

ENG vs IND: What are the changes in Indian team you would like to see in fourth test?

Karun Nair looked solid whenever he was on the pitch in the 6 innings so far. But he could never take his innings beyond 50. Nair scored 0, 20, 31, 26, 40 and 14 runs in the 6 innings so far. During this time, he got out unlucky many times. But it is possible that the team management may now plan to try talented and young cricketer Sai Sudharsan in his place.

23-year-old Sai Sudharsan from Chennai got a chance to debut in the ENG vs IND Leeds Test. But the first opportunity slipped from his hands like sand from his fist. He played innings of 0 and 30 runs in Leeds. The team lost the Test and he was also dropped from the playing XI.

Kuldeep can make a return

ENG vs IND: What are the changes in Indian team you would like to see in fourth test?

Discussions have once again intensified about the inclusion of 30-year-old left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav, who has taken 56 wickets in 13 Tests, in the playing XI. This tour could prove to be a good opportunity to include Kuldeep in the team.

Bumrah and Rishabh Pant out

ENG vs IND: What are the changes in Indian team you would like to see in fourth test?

Before the start of the series, chief selector Ajit Agarkar, head coach Gautam Gambhir, captain Shubman Gill, and even Bumrah himself confirmed that he will play only three matches in England, and since the pacer has already featured in two matches out of three played so far, there is a high possibility that he will miss the game in Manchester to return for the final fixture at The Oval in London from July 31 to August 4.

In addition to Bumrah, wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant could also miss the match in Manchester. Pant suffered a finger injury during the first day’s play of the Lord’s Test, and as a result, he didn’t keep after 34 overs in the first innings. There is still no clarity over Pant’s injury. If he misses out, then Dhruv Jurel will replace him in the playing XI.

The 24-year-old stumper from Agra impressed with his glovework during the third Test, and he has amassed a total of 202 runs in six innings of four Tests played so far. Jurel’s best score in Test cricket is 90, which he registered against the English team in Ranchi last year.

Akash Deep likely retain Bumrah's place

ENG vs IND: What are the changes in Indian team you would like to see in fourth test?

Akash Deep could only manage to take one wicket in the third Test, but if Bumrah misses out due to workload management, then he is likely to retain his place.

Prasidh Krishna, Shardul Thakur, Arshdeep Singh, and Kuldeep Yadav are the other four bowlers in India’s Test squad for the England series, and for the game at Old Trafford, Arshdeep could come in for Bumrah. Arshdeep is a left-arm pacer, and his inclusion will bring variety to India’s bowling attack.

"Find this ridiculous": Stuart Broad slams ICC's call on Siraj, while Gill's behaviour goes unpunished | sportzpoint.com

Recent events during the India vs England Lord's test have sparked a fierce debate over fairness. The Indian pacer, Mohammed Siraj recently incurred a 15% fine for his aggressive send-off to Ben Duckett and over-the-line celebratory actions.

In contrast, Shubman Gill's conduct at the end of Day 3, which included strong language, received no penalty or demerit points from the ICC. This clear hypocrisy in treatment has drawn sharp criticism from the former English cricketer Stuart Broad.

Stuart Broad has openly slammed the ICC's call on Siraj, while Gill's behaviour goes unpunished. Read the full story to know what exactly happened.

The incidents: Siraj's celebration vs. Gill's unpunished behaviour

Here are the details of two separate on-field incidents, took place during the India vs England Lord's test.

Mohammed Siraj fined for Duckett send-off

In the fifth over of Day 4, the home of cricket witnessed an intense clash between both the sides, which led to excessive celebration from the Indian pacer, Mohammed Siraj.

After providing a crucial breakthrough to India by dismissing Ben Duckett, he went on to give him an aggressive in-your-face stare, followed with a visible shoulder barge, while the batter walked back to the pavilion.

This act not only put him in a ban risk, but also resulted in a 15% fine along with a demerit point. Siraj was deemed to have breached Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which relates to "Using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during an International Match."

Shubman Gill's inappropriate behaviour goes unpunished

Looking back at the end of Day 3, we witnessed something below-the-belt during the last over, where the tensions noticeably escalated between both the teams. Displeased with England's Zak Crawley, the Indian captain, Shubman Gill went up to confront about wasting excessive time.

The moment took a turn when visibly frustrated Gill, shouted at Crawley, telling him to "grow some f****** balls." Umpires immediately intervened to make things right, howsoever, the clear breach of conduct and use of foul language towards the opponent was live on television.

This incident spread in the internet like a wildfire, whereas the ICC took no action against Gill. He has so far avoided the punishment, and is likely to be that way, given that 2 days have passed since the inappropriate encounter.

Stuart Broad slams ICC's call on Siraj, while Gill's behaviour goes unpunished

The former English cricketer, Stuart Broad, has publicly criticised the ICC's recent call, highlighting the inconsistency in their decision-making process. He pointed out the double standards in their application of the Code of Conduct.

In the context of Siraj's punishment and Gill's unpunished verbal outburst, he wrote on X: "Find this ridiculous. Siraj 15% for aggressive celebration. Gill swears live on TV & carries on and what? It’s either both or neither. Players aren’t and shouldn’t be robots, but consistency is key"

Broad also commented on the ICC's fine system, following Jofra Archer's dismissal of Rishabh Pant on the morning of Day 5. He shared footage of the wicket, captioning it with "Worth 15%."
