IPL 2022: How Shreyas Iyer can end KKR's title drought?

Shreyas Iyer led Delhi Capitals to 41 matches, recording 21 wins, 18 losses and two ties, between 2018-2019.

IPL 2022: How Shreyas Iyer can end KKR's title drought?

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) stuck to their plans and worked it out in possibly the last mega auction of the Indian Premier League (IPL) to fetch prolific India batter Shreyas Iyer at a sum of Rs. 12.25 crore. It was a deal-breaker for the two-time IPL champions considering that the franchise were looking for a long-term investment in a player who can not only score runs but also lead the side. And, Iyer, ticked the right boxes for the franchise with plenty of room for improvement in his journey as cricketer and captain.

Now consider this: when Iyer took over captaincy for Delhi Capitals, in 2018, he was the youngest to lead the capital franchise in the lucrative tournament. It showed the faith that the franchise had in the youngster and he repaid the dividends, in no time, by leading the side to their first IPL playoffs in seven years during the 2019 season. In fact, his stature as a captain, only grew as he led the Delhi Capitals to their first-ever final in the succeeding season.

Venky Mysore -- CEO and managing director of the franchise -- who is also one of the masterminds behind the buying of players to set up the squad will expect Iyer to deliver in the same manner for the new franchise. It can, also, hardly be argued that the Mumbai-batter will be eager to repay the dividends and prove his worth.

Learnt from the best

Iyer led Delhi Capitals to 41 matches, recording 21 wins, 18 losses and two ties, between 2018-2019. His winning percentage stands at a reliable 53.65.

That being said, his conversations with former India captain Sourav Ganguly and ex-Australia captain Ricky Ponting, has helped him develop his leadership skills in the formative years. In fact, the captain of Australia during its golden era, once remarked him as an infectious enigma who can lift the morale and spirit of the franchise at any situation.

A similar approach will be required for the rejuvenated KKR set-up from the upcoming season and there is no or little doubt that Iyer can be relied on for the same.

Believes in building the franchise

In fact, the right-handed batter, himself, highlighted that creating an atmosphere where the franchise can work towards one goal will be at the top of his agenda for KKR. He would be, additionally, far more mature in his approach through his experience over the years.

"I would be coming in with a much different mindset now. I'm now more mature and experienced in terms of my decision making and captaincy skills," Iyer told kkr.in.

"Really waiting eagerly to work with every individual in the team, and build that synergy which could really help the team perform at a different level. I'm just going to love the responsibility, and I thrive under pressure," he added.

Leads by example

It is also notable that Iyer remains unperturbed by the captaincy tag and rather loves to lead by example. His prolific run in IPL 2019, where he scored 463 runs at an average of 30.86, after being retained as captain and 519 runs in the succeeding season, is a testament to that.

KKR can also expect a brilliant season from Iyer in 2022 as he has maintained the purple patch throughout the recently concluded T20I series against Sri Lanka where he notched up three consecutive half-centuries to become the highest run-scorer for the side.

And with all bases cover, the Kolkata franchise, will be expected to end their title drought since 2014 under the reign of Iyer.

Most Runs for India in Pink Ball Test

Pink Ball Test, a five-day match contested under lights like a One Day International, was first held in November 2015 after a lot of trials in First-Class cricket across the globe. Day-Night Test was introduced to add more to the longer format as white-ball especially the T20s has taken over the game with crowds preferring the shorter format.

India are set to play their second Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Adelaide. After winning the Perth Test match by a massive margin of 295 runs, India will face Australia against the pink ball, under lights. So before the start of the series, let's take a look at the Indian batters who scored the most runs in the Pink Ball Test.

1# Virat Kohli | 277 Runs

Former Indian skipper Virat Kohli has a fine record against the pink-ball, having played all of India's four pink-ball matches so far. He leads the scoring chart in pink ball Test cricket for India. In six innings so far, he has scored 277 runs at an average of 46.16, with a century and fifty. His knock of 136* against Bangladesh in 2019 at Kolkata is the only century by an Indian in a pink-ball Test.

After having overcome a lean patch of form with a century at Perth, Virat would be raring to continue his golden run in Australia and at the Adelaide Oval.

2# Rohit Sharma | 173 Runs

Indian team captain Rohit Sharma comes second on the list scoring just one half-century in Pink Ball Tests, accumulating 173 runs in five matches at an average of 39. This will be Rohit Sharma’s first Day-Night Test match on foreign soil, as all three of his previous Pink Ball Tests were played in India.

As an opener, Rohit will need to weather the new ball, especially during twilight and night sessions when the pink ball is at its most ferocious. It will be quite interesting to see how Rohit goes about his business in the upcoming game.

3# Shreyas Iyer | 159 Runs

Shreyas Iyer has played just one day-night Test match and has scored 159 runs in it. He put up knocks of 92 and 67 in the second test between India and Sri Lanka in 2022. India were 86/4 after electing to bat. Iyer shone with a blistering 92 off 98 deliveries, whipping 10 fours and four maximums. He played with the tail-enders and was the last man to be dismissed (252/10). India eventually won by 238 runs.

4# Ajinkya Rahane | 100 Runs

Ajinkya Rahane comes in 4th place with 100 runs in 3 matches. Rahane also scored a half-century against Bangladesh in 2019.

5# Cheteshwar Pujara | 98 Runs

Cheteshwar Pujara is 5th on this list. He has amassed just 98 runs in 3 day-night Test matches. Pujara put up knocks of 55 and 43 against Bangladesh and Australia respectively.
