Kolkata Knight Riders has signed Jason Roy of England for IPL 2023 for Rs 2.8 crore as the replacement of injured Shreyas Iyer.

Kolkata Knight Riders has signed Jason Roy of England for IPL 2023 for Rs 2.8 crore as the replacement of injured Shreyas Iyer. Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of the tournament while Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan is not available for this season.

Jason Roy, who previously featured in the 2017 and 2018 seasons, last played for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 2021 season. In the year 2021, he played five matches, scoring 150 runs including a half-century. The 32-year-old has played 64 T20Is for England, scoring 1522 runs at a strike rate of 137.61 with 8 fifties. Roy was unsold in the IPL 2023 auction. His base price was Rs 1.5 crore, but no team showed interest in buying this player. Whereas earlier this player was a part of Gujarat Titans. The England opener did not feature in IPL 2022 season for GT after pulling out of IPL due to mental health. Roy is the most lethal opening batsmen in the world and can be a good signing for KKR.

Kolkata Knight Riders seems to be in a bit of trouble in the IPL 2023. KKR captain Shreyas Iyer has already missed this season due to a back injury. Iyer has even been out of the final of the World Test Championship. After which Nitish Rana was appointed as the new captain of KKR. At the same time, KKR's star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has already refused to play this season. In such a situation, the KKR team management has included England's explosive player Jason Roy in the team.

Apart from Shakib, Bangladesh wicketkeeper Litton Das will also not be available before April 10 in IPL 2023. He is part of the national squad which is taking part in the ongoing one-off Test against Ireland.

KKR started with a defeat at the hands of Punjab Kings in their opening match of the IPL 2023 in Mohali. Nitish Rana's side will next take on Royal Challengers Bangalore at the iconic Eden Gardens stadium in Kolkata on Thursday.
