IPL team Punjab Kings has appointed world champion Trevor Bayliss as the head coach for IPL 2023 season on Friday. Bayliss will replace Anil Kumble. Former India captain Kumble was the head coach of Punjab Kings ahead of the 2020 IPL season. But he could not give the result. Last month, the Punjab Kings franchise board held a meeting. Bollywood actress Preity Zinta, industrialists Mohit Burman, Ness Wadia, Karan Paul, and team CEO Satish Menon attended the meeting. The franchise was looking for a new coach for some time.
Under the coaching of 59-year-old Trevor Bayliss, England won the 50-overs World Cup for the first time in 2019. Trevor was in the team's support staff when Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) won the IPL title in 2012 and 2014. Bayliss became the coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL after making England the world champions in 2019.
"I'm honored to be given the Head Coach's role with the Punjab Kings. A foundation franchise with an appetite for success. I look forward to working with a talented squad of players determined to compete for silverware." Trevor Bayliss, after being appointed as the head coach of Punjab Kings.
Punjab Kings terminated the contract with Kumble last month after a three-year stint. They had reportedly approached former England captain Eoin Morgan and Bayliss for the IPL 2023 season. Kumble was the head coach before the 2020 season and was in charge of the team for the next three seasons. In all three seasons when Kumble was in charge of the team, Punjab Kings finished fifth among eight teams in the 2020 and 2021 seasons and sixth in the points table among 10 teams in 2022. At that time, Kumble was the fifth coach appointed by the Kings in five seasons after Sanjay Bangar (2014-16), Virender Sehwag (2017), Brad Hodge (2018) and Mike Hesson (2019).
Punjab Kings has not won the IPL title even once. The last three seasons have been very bad for Punjab Kings and they have not been able to qualify for the playoffs even once.
