IPL is the biggest and toughest league in the world. It is one of the revolutions in world cricket that BCCI has presented to the world. Getting into the IPL means you are sharing the dressing room with the legends of the game. Moreover, you are also getting paid a huge amount of money as well. However, many international stars have found it hard to get into the IPL every time they were auctioned. With 8 days from IPL2021, we will discuss one of the unique IPL records of all time. It is about the 13 players who have played in every season of IPL since the first season.

#1 MS Dhoni (204 IPL matches )

MS Dhoni might be on the list of every IPL records possible. Dhoni was the captain of the Indian Cricket team when he was bought by the Chennai Super Kings in the first season of IPL. The world cup winning captain has won 3 IPL title and has been in the playoffs more than anyone in the league.

MS Dhoni has played more matches than anyone in IPl (204), captained more matches than anyone in the league as well. The Captain Cool is now in his 14th season as a captain in the biggest T20 league in the world. However, due to a controversial betting case and CSK being suspended from the league, Dhoni played for the Pune Warriors India in the 2014 & 2015 season.

#2 Virat Kohli (192 IPL matches)

Virat Kohli is the only player to play for the same franchise since the outburst of the league. In the 2008 season of IPL, Royal Challengers Bangalore bought the young kid who had just lead the India-19 team to a world cup victory.

Virat was then said to be one of the promising stars of Indian cricket. Hence, even with some below-average seasons at the start, RCB opted to retain the right-handed batsman from Delhi. Since then he has never auctioned again in the IPL, just because the RCB management has never left Virat out.

Virat is the only player to play for the same franchise since the 2008 edition of IPL. He has played a record 192 IPL matches for the RCB, which is the most by anyone for a single team. This is one of the unique IPL records that Kohli has.

However, the current Indian is yet to win his first IPL trophy. The RCB fans will surely hope to turn around their fate this time.

#3 Rohit Sharma (200 IPL matches)

Now if one says Rohit Sharma is Mr IPL, he/she might not be that wrong. Rohit also has many IPL records in his bag. Winning the most numbers of IPL titles as a player and captain is one of them.

The Hitman had played his initial years for the Decan Charges and won a season with them. In 2011, Mumbai Indians bought the superstar batsman and since then they have won more trophies than anyone in the league.

Rohit was made the captain of Mumbai Indians in the 2013 season and they won their maiden trophy that season. After that Rohit won a total of 5 trophies as captain and 6 as a player. This is one of the toughest IPL records to break.

#4 Dinesh Karthik (196 IPL matches)

Dinesh Karthik is another name associated with Indian cricket for a very long time. Karthik is one of the leading wicket-keeper batsmen along with MS Dhoni in the IPL.

Till now Karthik has played for many IPL franchise since the first season of the IPL. Post the Nidahas Trophy heroics he was made the captain of the KKR franchise in 2018. Since then he has been an important part of the team.

With his 360 degree game going, he is still considered as one the best finishers in the league.

#5 Piyush Chawala (164 IPL matches)

The leg-spinner from UP was a sensation in his earlier days of International cricket. Debuted as a 19-year-old, the leg-spinner was one of the brightest prospects of Indian cricket.

Chawla and KKR have been a great combination. He played as many as six consecutive seasons for the franchise helping them winning the title in 2014 in that stint. However, Chawla was very successful with his first-team Kings XI Punjab (Now Punjab Kings), where he played for six years also.

Piyush Chawla is one the highest wicket-takers of the IPL, with 156 wickets in 164 IPL matches.

#6 Amit Mishra (150 IPL matches)

Another successful leg-spinner in the IPL. Amit Mishra is one of the most successful IPL bowlers. He has taken 160 wickets in his 150 IPL matches.

Mishra also has the record for taking most number of hattricks in the tournament(3).

Amit Mishra was first picked by the Delhi franchise in the inaugural season of the league. Since then he has played in every season of the IPL till now. Mishra will be playing for the Delhi franchise in the 2021 edition of IPL.

#7 Ajinkya Rahane (149 IPL matches)

Rahane was a sensation at the top of the order for the Rajasthan Royals, though he had started his IPL career with the Mumbai Indians.

Rahane was the main reason behind the success of the Royals in his time. He was also the only and first-ever batsman to hit 6 fours in an over, where the bowler was Chris Gayle. This is one of the very rare IPL records that Rahane has.

However, due to lack of form Royals released him in the 2020 season and Rahane found himself in the Delhi Capitals dressing room. He will continue to represent the Capitals in the 2021 season which makes him the 7th player who has played every season since the first season of IPL.

#8 Robin Uthappa (189 IPL matches)

Robin Uthappa has played as many as 189 IPL matches in the league making one of the veterans in IPL.

Post a great performance in the inaugural T20 World Cup, Robin was bought by the Mumbai Indians. Since then he has played for a franchise like RCB, and Rajasthan Royals. However, it was the KKR team who brought out the best of Uthappa after they bought him in the 2014 season.

Uthappa opened the innings for them and scored as many as 660 runs earning the orange cap that season. He was named as the Mr Consistent after his record-breaking 11 40+ scores that season. Moreover, he helped them win the IPl trophy that season too.

But, after two not so great seasons in 2018 and 2019, he was released by the KKR management. In 2020 he found his place in the Royals Dressing room. But, after one year Robin is in the CSK team with his world cup winning captain MS Dhoni.

#9 Manish Pandey (146 IPL matches)

Another U-19 cricket star was brought into the limelight along with Virat Kohli. Pandey was the first-ever Indian player to hit an IPL century. He scored an unbeaten 114 for the Royal Challengers Bangalore against the Deccan Chargers in IPL 2009.

Till 2010 season he was with the RCB team but was bought by MS Dhoni's Pune Warriors India in the 2011 season. However, Pandey's best years came under the captaincy of Gautam Gambhir after the KKK franchise bought him in the 2014 season.

His vital knocks made sure KKR would become the IPL champions in the 2014 season for the second time. But, in the 2018 season, the Hyderabad franchise bought him as he was released by the KKR management in the 2018 season. Though he has not shown his true talent with the score for the SRH team, his experience in the middle order would make the team retain him till the current season.

For his experience and fielding skills, Pandey is one of players who have played in every season of IPL

#10 Shikhar Dhawan (176 IPL matches)

To be very strange he is the only left-hander in the list of players who have played in every season of IPL from 2008. Dhawan is another U-19 cricket team product. He was the highest run-getter in the 2004 U-19 cricket world cup.

Dhawan was picked up by Delhi Daredevils and he played in a star-studded team alongside Sehwag, Gambhir, de Villiers, Dilshan, and Collingwood in the first season. Later, he found himself in different teams like Mumbai Indians and Decan Chargers.

He found his best form with the Decan Charges and Hyderabad Sun Risers team. But, in the 2020 season, he was traded to the Delhi Capitals team. Till now Dhawan has scored 5197 runs in IPL.

#11 Wriddhiman Saha (124 IPL matches)

Wriddhiman Saha is the third wicket-keeper on our list. Considered the best wicket-keeper in the world at the test level, Saha has a handy IPL career as well.

The KKR team scouted Saha in the first season. However, he was sidelined till he found his place in the CSK team in 2011. But, he had to be the second choice because of the presence of MS Dhoni in the team as the wicket-keeper. However, his wicket-keeping skill made sure he becomes one of the players who have played in every season of IPL.

It was the 2014 season when the world his batting skills. Playing for the Kings XI Punjab, Saha scored the first-ever ton in an IPL final opening the batting. But, due to injury issues, he was released by the Punjab franchise. He was then bought by the SRH team. He will be their first-line up wicket-keeper in this year's IPL.

#12 Dhawal Kulkarni (91 IPL macthes)

The seamer from Mumbai is the only pacer on our list. Kulkarni is one of the most experienced domestic players in the league.

He was signed by the Mumbai team in the 2008 team but did not flourish enough till he was bought by the Rajasthan Royals. However, due to the suspension of Royals in 2015, he was forced to join the Gujarat Lions. Then again he brought back by the Royals in 2018. He is currently in the Mumbai Indians team.

Due to lack of his death bowling skills, Kulkarni has found himself in and out of the team for the most of the time. Though for his swing skills he is one of the players who have played in every season of IPL

#13 AB de Villiers (169 IPL matches)

AB de Villiers is the only foreign player who has played in every season of IPL from 2008. Known as Mr.360 ABD is one of the most loved cricketers in the world.

ABD is the most complete T20 batsman there has been in the IPL. He can play in the classical form and then launch his power-hitting ability later in the innings as well. The chasing ability of ABD makes him still one of the best in the world.

With his more than good keeping skill, his fielding is still the best, making him one of the fittest in the world even post his retirement.

ABD had started his IPL career with the Delhi Daredevils team and then found himself in the RCB team in the 2011 edition. Till then his pair with Virat Kohli has become the feature of IPL. However, he is still to win an IPL trophy yet.

MS Dhoni is the winning captain of 2011 World Cup, who finished off in style with a six to seal the victory for India. He also led India to victory in the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy, becoming the first captain to claim all ICC limited-overs trophies.

He continued to captain India for several years and played a crucial role as a finisher in white-ball cricket. He also led CSK to win four IPL titles from 2011-2023.

  • Retirement: Dhoni retired from test cricket in December 2014, and announced his retirement from international cricket (ODIs and T20Is) on August 15, 2020. However, he continues to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

2. Virender Sehwag

Virender Sehwag was the vice-captain of India's 2011 WC-winning squad and provided explosive starts at the top of the order, including a stunning knock of 175 runs against Bangladesh in the opening match.

He continued his attacking batting in Test and ODI formats for a few more years.

  • Retirement: Sehwag retired from all forms of international cricket in October 2015.

Gautam Gambhir was an integral part of India's success in the 2011 WC, especially with his knock of 97 runs in the final. He continued to play a key role in India's top order for a period. He also led Kolkata Knight Riders to 2 IPL titles in 2012 and 2014.

Later, he served as a mentor for Lucknow Super Giants and then KKR, guiding them to their third title in 2024.

  • Retirement: Announced retirement from all formats in December 2018.
  • Currently doing: In July 2024, Gambhir was appointed as the head coach of India for three years until the 2027 ODI World Cup. He got his first major ICC title in a coaching role by leading India to victory in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy as the head coach.

4. Sachin Tendulkar

Sachin Tendulkar was the leading run-scorer for India and the second overall in the tournament (482 runs in 9 innings), including two centuries.

He scored his record-setting 100th international century in March 2012 and became a member of the Rajya Sabha in the same year. Additionally, he was a part of Mumbai Indians team that won the IPL in 2013.

  • Retirement: Retired from ODI cricket in December 2012, and from tests in November 2013. He also retired from the IPL in 2013.

The "Player of the tournament," Yuvraj Singh, delivered an exceptional all-rounder performance throughout the World Cup. He successfully battled germ-cell cancer in 2011 and returned to cricket the next year (2012).

Yuvraj continued to play white ball cricket for India occasionally and played in various IPL teams, winning twice with SRH in 2016 and MI in 2019.

As the youngest batsman in the squad (22 years 95 days), Virat Kohli showed glimpses of his future greatness by performing well in the 2011 World Cup, including a century against Bangladesh.

Kohli rose to be one of the world's premier batsmen and captained India across all formats. He became the most successful test captain in history for India. He led India to numerous victories and broke several batting records.

He is the only player from India's 2011 World Cup-winning squad who is still actively playing international cricket (ODI format).

  • Retirement: He retired from T20Is after India won the T20 World Cup in 2024, and also retired from Test Cricket in 2025.

8. Yusuf Pathan

Yusuf Pathan was a part of India's World Cup-winning squad in 2011 and played as a batting all-rounder, primarily in the lower middle order. He continued to play in domestic cricket and the IPL, playing for various franchises, including KKR and SRH.

Pathan was also a part of India's 2007 T20 World Cup winning squad.

  • Retirement: Retired from all formats in February 2021.
  • Currently doing: He became a member of parliament from the Baharampur Lok Sabha constituency of West Bengal, and has been seen participating in the Legends League Cricket.

9. Zaheer Khan

The shepherd of India's pace attack, Zaheer Khan, was the joint-highest wicket-taker in the 2011 World Cup with 21 wickets in 9 matches. His contributions to the bowling unit were phenomenal.

He continued to represent India in internationals for a few more years.

  • Retirement: Khan retired from international cricket in October 2015.
  • Currently doing: He has been involved in commentary and coaching roles. He is also a cricket expert and analyst.

10. Harbhajan Singh

Harbhajan Singh proved to be crucial for the team in the WC 2011, with the kind of experience he had in the game. He continued to play for India occasionally after the World Cup, but his international appearances became less frequent.

He continued to play IPL for franchises like MI, CSK and KKR.

11. Ashish Nehra

Ashish Nehra played three matches in the 2011 World Cup and was particularly effective in the semi-final against Pakistan, where he took 2 wickets for 33 runs.

He faced injuries but made a remarkable comeback to the Indian T20I team and played the T20 World Cup that year.

Munaf Patel played a significant role as a consistent medium-pacer in the 2011 WC winning squad, picking 11 wickets in 8 matches. He continued to play domestic cricket and in various T20 leagues after the World Cup.

  • Retirement: He retired from all formats in December 2018.
  • Currently doing: Served as the bowling coach for Delhi Capitals since the 2024 season and has been seen participating in Legends League Cricket.

13. S Sreesanth

S Sreesanth came in as a replacement for Praveen Kumar (ruled out due to injury) in India's 2011 WC squad. He played 2 matches, including the final.

His career was significantly impacted by a spot-fixing scandal in the 2013 IPL, which led to a ban from cricket.

  • Retirement: He made a comeback in domestic cricket after the ban was reduced, and retired from all domestic forms in March 2022.
  • Currently doing: Sreesanth is the co-owner of the Kollam Aeries team in the Kerala Cricket League. He also participated in reality shows like Big Boss and was involved in acting and other ventures.

14. Piyush Chawla

The youngest player in India's 2011 World Cup winning squad, Piyush Chawla (22 yrs 46 days), picked 4 wickets in the three matches he played. He continued to play domestic cricket and IPL for various franchises and won.

  • Retirement: Chawla announced from all forms of cricket in June 2025. His last international appearance for India was in 2012.
  • Currently doing: He has been associated with the sport as an analyst and was seen giving inputs in per-match shows in IPL and other leagues.

15. Ravichandran Ashwin

The spin master, Ravichandran Ashwin, played only 2 matches in the tournament, picking up 4 wickets. He turned out to be one of the most successful Test bowlers for India, with 537 Test wickets.

Ashwin later developed into a useful all-rounder and could bat well. He was also named ICC Cricketer of the Year in 2016.

  • Retirement: Announced retirement from international cricket in December 2024.
  • Currently doing: He is actively involved in playing cricket in IPL and played in the TNPL as well. Ashwin is also an active YouTuber, who analyses and shares cricketing stories on his channel, which currently has 1.71M subscribers.

Punjab Kings (PBKS) lost to Royal Challengers Bangaluru (RCB) by 6 runs in the final of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025). With this, PBKS' dream of winning the first title remained unfulfilled. At the same time, PBKS' veteran spinner Yuzvendra Chahal once again failed to win the trophy.

Delhi Capitals' Mohit Sharma is another IPL star to have lost the final thrice. Mohit was part of CSK's squad from 2013-2015, where the five-time winners suffered defeats against Mumbai Indians in both the finals. It is worth noting that Sharma was part of both the finals. 

Mohit's third try to win an IPL trophy was in 2023 with Gujarat Titans against his former team Chennai Super Kings, but suffered a heartbreaking defeat, as he also bowled the last over of the match and conceded 10 runs in the final two balls. 

2. Rahul Tripathi | 3 IPL Finals

Rahul Tripathi is another star to have lost three finals with three different teams. Rahul has played for several IPL franchises in his career and played his first final in 2017 when he represented Rising Pune Supergiants. Tripathi got another shot at the trophy in 2021 with KKR, but lost to Chennai Super Kings. 

The right-hand batter then moved to Sunrisers Hyderabad from KKR and reached the finals in 2024, but suffered a heartbreak against his former team Kolkata Knight Riders.

Shreyas Iyer entered the 2022 mega auction and was picked by Kolkata Knight Riders for ₹12.25 crore, and was immediately appointed as the new captain.

His first year with KKR concluded with a 7th position finish in the points table, and him scoring 401 runs in 14 matches total.

Missing a season (2023)

Iyer was ruled out entirely of IPL 2023 due to his back injury and Nitish Rana stepped in as the captain for KKR during his absence. He eventually recovered and made a grand comeback in the next season.
