Martin Guptill released from New Zealand central contract

Kiwi opener Martin Guptill is the latest New Zealand cricketer to opt-out of a central contract by New Zealand Cricket, following in the footsteps of Trent Boult and Colin de Grandhomme. The decision comes in the aftermath of his omission from the recently concluded T20I series against India.

Martin Guptill has been one of the stars for the Blackcaps in the limited-overs format over the last decade and is the country's leading run-scorer in T20Is. However, the emergence of young dashing batter Finn Allen has reduced the veteran opener to the sidelines.

The 36-year-old, despite the release from the central contract, is still committed to playing for New Zealand. However, he will be looking to explore other opportunities as well. Guptill is reportedly set to feature in the next edition of the BBL.

"Playing for my country has been a massive honor, and I'm grateful to everyone within the Blackcaps and NZC for their support. But, equally, I'm realistic enough to understand the need to consider my options in the current circumstances. With this release, I'm still available for New Zealand, I have the chance to explore other opportunities, and I also get to spend more time with my family - which is important."

NZC chief executive David White praised the veteran batter for his exceptional contributions and services to the national team. He stated that the board would not hinder his desire to explore other opportunities outside New Zealand. The flamboyant batter is the third-highest run-getter in the 50-over format for the Kiwis, and his 237* remains the second-highest individual score in ODI cricket.

"We understand Martin's position. He's been a fantastic batsman for us for a long period of time, and we certainly don't wish to stand in his way as he explores other opportunities. Martin's been a giant of the white ball game, a committed and well-respected member of the Blackcaps, and has earned the right to play out his career on his own terms. He leaves his contract with our best wishes," NZC chief executive David White said in an official statement.

The number 5 team in this list is the New Zealand team which has won 52 test matches since 2010 out of a total of 122 test matches played till now. They have lost 46 matches which is not a good record to have and hopefully the win loss difference decreases and they have a total of drawn test matches of 24 and going forward it can be said that their record will improve.

4. South Africa | 66

South Africa have one of the most impressive records in the test cricket as in the 127 test matches they have played in from 2010-2025 , they have been able to win 66 test matches and they have lost 39 matches against good teams as well and they also have drawn 22 test matches. South Africa was barred from cricket as well for a number of years and they were reinstated in 1993 again and their journey hasn’t looked back since.

After Australia, the third team with most test match wins is the Indian team with 80 test match wins since 2010 in a total of 156 matches. England’s limited-overs skipper Eoin Morgan represented both Ireland and England. From 2006 to 2022, he hit 346 sixes in international cricket. The English player has slammed 6 sixes in Tests, 220 in ODIs, and 120 in T20Is. Morgan captained England to their first ICC Cricket World Cup win in 2019.

New Zealand appoints Rob Walter as new head coach, will take over responsibility in place of Gary Stead

New Zealand has appointed Rob Walter as the coach of all three formats of New Zealand men's cricket team in place of Gary Stead. Walter was the coach of South Africa's ODI and T20 teams from January 2023 to April this year. Prior to this, he coached for five years in New Zealand's Otago Province and Central Districts Association.

New Zealand cricket under Walter's coaching

Under Rob Walter's coaching, South Africa made it to the semifinals of the ODI World Cup 2023 and the Champions Trophy this year. Not only this, he also played an important role in taking South Africa to the finals of the T20 World Cup last year.

“It’s an amazing opportunity to work with such a talented group of players and support staff through a period of time in which so many global events, as well as massive bilateral series, will be contested,” Walter said. “I just can’t wait to get started. It’s exciting, it’s challenging and the opportunity is enormous.”

The 49-year-old Rob Walter was high on New Zealand Cricket's list of preferred candidates from the moment it decided to pursue another all-formats coach, ruling out Stead who guided the Black Caps to the inaugural World Test Championship.

He'll take over in time for New Zealand's tour to Zimbabwe, which starts with a T20 tri-series against the hosts and South Africa before a two-test series against Zimbabwe.

Stead step down from his role in March

Stead has been New Zealand's head coach across all three formats since 2018. New Zealand Cricket announced earlier this week that it was looking for a new coach to replace him.

Stead announced in March that he was stepping down from his role in limited-overs formats but wanted to stay on as Test coach. New Zealand Cricket, however, said it preferred to have one coach for all three formats.
