Most Runs in IPL history

The fifteenth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to get underway on March 26 (Saturday), 2022 with a clash between last year's finalists Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. This league has established itself to be one of the most popular tournaments in World cricket. In the IPL history so far, some batsmen have proved that they are cut above the rest by consistent performance over the years.

Meanwhile, in this article, we will take a look at the top 10 batsmen with the most runs in IPL history so far.

Top 10 most runs scorer in the history of IPL:

#10. Gautam Gambhir | 4217 runs

Two-time title-winning KKR skipper Gautam Gambhir has placed at number ten on this list. Gambhir has amassed 4217 runs in 152 innings at an average of 31.01. The former captain has represented Delhi and Kolkata-based franchises in IPL. Gambhir has scored with a strike rate of 123.88. Moreover, he has registered 36 half-centuries including his personal best score of 93. He has last played in the 2018 edition for Delhi Capitals.

#9. Robin Uthappa | 4722* runs

Former Indian opener Robin Uthappa, who has represented 6 IPL franchises has aggregated 4722 runs so far in 186 innings. He has scored at an average of 27.94. Uthappa has played for MI, RCB, KKR, PWI, RR, and CSK respectively. Moreover, Uthappa has maintained a strike rate of 130.15 and amassed 25 half-centuries including his highest score of 87.

Meanwhile, he has also received the Orange Cap for scoring the most runs in IPL 2014, in which his team KKR lifted the trophy. In this season, again he will be playing for Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

#8. Mahendra Singh Dhoni | 4746* runs

The captain cool Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who has four IPL trophies under his belt, comes at number eight on this list of players with the most runs in IPL history. As we know, Mahi is playing for CSK since the inaugural edition of IPL in 2008 (except 2016 & 2017). MSD has played 193 innings in IPL in which so far he has 4746 runs under his name at an average of 39.55.

Meanwhile, Dhoni has 23 half-centuries in those innings including his highest score of 84* in the 2019 edition. Mahi-led CSK is the defending champions of this season. The former Indian captain has continued with CSK this year also.

#7. Chris Gayle | 4965 runs

Chris Gayle, also known as Universe Boss, is one of the giants of the tournament who has played in all 14 seasons of IPL. He has represented Kolkata in the inaugural edition while then he played for RCB and last in for Punjab franchise m Gayle has accumulated 4965 runs in 141 innings at an average of 39.72. He has played with a strike rate of 148.96.

Meanwhile, Gayle has a unique record in IPL as he scored the highest score of 175* runs against PWI in 2013. This score is the highest individual score to date. However, Gayle is currently situating at number seven on this list of most runs in IPL history. The Universe Boss has also registered 31 half-centuries and 6 centuries under his name.

#6. AB De Villers | 5162 runs

Former South Africa Abraham Benjamin De Villiers has played for DD in his initial career while he then represented RCB till 2021. De Villiers has 5162 runs to his name in 170 innings with an average of 39.71 and a strike rate of 151.69. Meanwhile, he comes at number six on this list of most runs in IPL history.

ABD was one of the crucial members of the Royal Challengers Bangalore franchise and contributed on many occasions. Moreover, De Villiers has also amazed 40 half-centuries and 3 centuries including his highest score of 133*.

#5. David Warner | 5449* runs

The former captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad, David Warner is the top-run getter in IPL among overseas players and fifth-most in overall record. He has so far amassed 5449 runs in 150 innings at an average of 41.59 and strike rate being 139.96. He has smashed 4 centuries and 50 half-centuries in the league so far.

Warner didn't enjoy a great campaign in the initial half of last IPL and was even dropped from the playing XI. However, he was purchased by his former franchise Delhi Capitals for INR 6.25 crores in the mega auction.

#4. Suresh Raina | 5528* runs

Suresh Raina who is fondly called Mr. IPL has done justice to the name by performing wonderfully right from the start of the tournament. He is the fourth-highest run-getter with 5528 runs in 200 innings at an average of 32.51 and strike rate of 136.73.

Despite his great record in the IPL over the years, he went unsold in the mega auction of IPL 2022. Earlier before the auction, CSK had decided not to retain the left-handed batter.

#3. Rohit Sharma | 5611* runs

Rohit Sharma, who has won 5 IPL trophies as captain has good returns as a batsman as well. He has scored 5611 runs, the third-most in IPL history, in 208 innings played in the league at an average of 31.17 and strike rate of 130.39. This includes 1 hundred and 40 half-centuries with his highest score being 109*.

Rohit was initially played for Deccan Chargers(2008-2010) and he used to bat in the middle-order. He joined Mumbai Indian in 2011 and then he started his captaincy journey in 2013. However, he has been opening for Mumbai Indians since 2019 and is expected to take the same role this year too.

#2. Shikhar Dhawan | 5784* runs

Indian ODI opener Shikhar Dhawan is second on the list of players with the most runs in IPL history. He has 5784 runs to his name with an average of 34.84 and a strike rate is 126.64. Dhawan registered 44 half-centuries and two centuries so far in the history of IPL. He was crucial in the past two to three seasons for Delhi Capitals.

Earlier, he had useful contributions while opening for Sunrisers Hyderabad along with David Warner. Dhawan will be playing for Punjab Kings, who bought Dhawan at a price of 8.25 INR.

#1. Virat Kohli | 6283* runs

Former Indian skipper Virat Kohli who led the Bangalore franchise from 2013 to 2021 is ruling the charts among the most run-getters in the history of IPL. Virat has accumulated 6283 runs in 199 innings with an average of 37.39 and strike rate being 129.94. He has struck 5 hundred and 42 half-centuries in the league so far. Among these, 4 tons came in the 2016 season where he slammed record 973 runs. He was also awarded the Orange Cap in the same season.
