Hugh Edmeades had a medical issue on Day 1 of the IPL 2022 auction, thus Charu Sharma stepped in as the auctioneer.
Hugh Edmeades, who has been supervising IPL auctions since 2019, collapsed on the platform on Day 1 of the two-day major auction event. Whilst doing the bidding of Sri Lankan all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga, he collapsed from the podium. Afterwards, He was quickly apprehended by medical personnel.
Following the terrible occurrence on Saturday, Charu Sharma, a well-known TV presenter and pundit, took over the proceedings from Edmeades.

IPL chairman Brijesh Patel contacted Charu Sharma and requested that he rush to the venue in Bengaluru.
In Charu Sharma's words
In an interview with Cricbuzz, Sharma revealed, " 'Put on your shoes and come here,' the chairman of the Indian Premier League (IPL) mentioned on the phone. There is an emergency."
"When I reached, I was told what had happened to Hugh Edmeades – the original IPL auctioneer from England, who fell off the dais due to Postural Hypotension. I said 'fine, let's do it.' We had a 15-minute session. I inquired about what all had been conducted and what was left to do. The IPL officials then asked me if the break should be extended. I said 'don't'. I had some fun," he added further.

However, Charu has hosted various award ceremonies and served as a quizmaster for several television shows.
"Yes, fun. It is a profession that is not alien to me. It was just another day with the hammer. The difference was, maybe, more people were watching and following it. A professional job is a professional job. Two people involved or two million or two billion and whether it is a Rs 2 auction or a Rs 1 billion auction," he concluded.
Nevertheless, in the opening season of the IPL, Charu Sharma was also the CEO of the Royal Challengers Bangalore team.
