Ricky Ponting on Virat Kohli's form: "It's only a matter of time before he bounces back"

Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting believes Kohli should be kept at No.3 since "moving him around" could further unsettle him.

Ricky Ponting on Virat Kohli's form: "It's only a matter of time before he bounces back"

Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has weighed in on Virat Kohli's poor run of form and backed the former India captain to return to his dominating best rather soon. Kohli, once the world's most consistent batter, finds himself in the middle of a prolonged slump in form, where runs are looking extremely difficult to come by.

After stepping down as India's captain, Kohli's form has dipped even further, making him a pale shadow of his former self. This has led to speculations about his place in India's T20 World Cup squad, with many believing that on current form, Kohli does not merit a place in the squad that will be traveling to Australia in October.

India's legendary all-rounder Kapil Dev had pointed out that if Ashwin, the No. 2 ranked Test bowler could be dropped from India's Playing XI, the same should apply to Kohli. Ponting, however, is not one of them and he still believes that a team with Kohli is still more fearful than one without him.

"I think if I was an opposition captain or an opposition player, I will be fear playing an Indian team that has Virat Kohli in it, more than I would be one that doesn't have him in it. I know there have been some challenges for him, it's been a difficult time.

But every great player that I have seen in this game has been through it at some stage, whether that's a batsman or a bowler, they have all been through it. And somehow, the best (players) find a way to rebound and respond, and it's only a matter of time before Virat does that,"

Ponting said on The ICC Review Show

Ponting added that leaving Kohli out of India's initial World Cup matches tends to do more harm to Kohli than good. Ricky Ponting mentioned that if it was him in place of Rohit Sharma on Rahul Dravid, the message to Kohli will be simple… make the environment as healthy and as positive as possible from Virat's point of view.

"I will keep pushing with him because I know the upside": Ponting on Kohli

"If you leave Virat out of the eve of the World Cup, and someone comes in and has a reasonable tournament, it will be hard for Virat to get back in it. If I was India, I will keep pushing with him, because I know the upside. If they actually get him back confident and playing as well as he can, that upside is better than most.

So I think if I was a captain or a coach, I will be making life as easy as possible for him to feel as comfortable as possible, and just wait for him to flick the switch and start scoring runs again,"

said Ricky Ponting

"Early in the tournament, for a first-round game, (it's important too) get him in nice and early, among the runs, and then hopefully by the end of the tournament, you'll have Virat Kohli back at his best. That's the way I would look at it. I wouldn't think about holding him back at the start of the tournament, with the thought that you might be able to bring him back towards the back end and have him peak.

Tournament play isn't like that. You need to work your way into the tournament, get some runs under your belt, get some confidence, and then be playing your best cricket at the back end."

Ricky Ponting is not in favor of shuffling Kohli much in the batting order

Ponting is not in favor of shuffling Kohli much in the batting order. Kohli the opener is an option that has been contemplated after Virat opened for India in a few games last year. But Ponting reckons that it is better Kohli sticks to one position in the batting order, preferably his No. 3 spot, and urged the management to back him to score runs from there.

"They probably should be trying to find new ways to get him back into the form and help him out. That (moving him up the order) quite often comes at the expense of someone else as well, you are moving someone else around trying to find a spot for Virat.

He has opened the batting, he has batted at No.3 in the IPL in the last couple of years, and has done the same for India. Moving him around will make him feel that people are worried about him, and he will be more unsettled,"

Ponting said

"I will be going the other way. If I was the coach of the captain, I would be telling him, 'This is your spot, this is where you're batting, it's not going to change. Keep believing in yourself, keep putting in the hard work, keep believing in what made you the best player in the world for a number of years – get back to those thoughts and the runs will come."

Delhi Capitals registered a spectacular win in the Super Over against Rajasthan Royals in the 32nd match of IPL 2025 played at Arun Jaitley Stadium on Thursday. However, arguing with the umpire during the match has cost Delhi's bowling coach Munaf Patel heavily.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has found Munaf Patel guilty for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct and has fined him. Along with this, he has also been given a demerit point.

There was a heated argument with the fourth umpire

During the match, Delhi Capitals bowling coach Munaf Patel was seen having a heated argument with the fourth umpire. This incident happened near the boundary, where Munaf was clearly angry with the umpire for not allowing him to convey the message on the field and they had an altercation over this. The video of this incident is also going viral on social media.

Fined 25% of his match fee

The BCCI has fined Munaf Patel 25% of his match fee. Along with this, he has also given a demerit point for violating the IPL Code of Conduct. Munaf has admitted a Level 1 offense under Article 2.20, which relates to conduct contrary to the spirit of the game. He has also accepted the punishment given by the match referee.

This is not the first disciplinary issue for Delhi this season. Captain Axar Patel was fined Rs 12 lakh after their sixth game - their only loss so far - against Mumbai Indians due to a slow over-rate.

Patel's contribution as bowling coach

Despite the controversy, Munaf Patel's contribution as bowling coach has been remarkable, as he is credited with Delhi's excellent bowling efforts. This performance played a vital role in turning the tables during the match.

BCCI sacks four staff members after defeat in Border Gavaskar Trophy in Australia

Taking a shocking decision, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has removed fielding coach T Dilip and assistant coach Abhishek Nayar from the Indian team's coaching staff. BCCI has taken this action after India's humiliating defeat in the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 in Australia.

According to media reports, by removing the coaching staff and many other members, the BCCI has given a strict warning that the performance of the Indian team in Tests cannot be ignored.

Abhishek became assistant coach eight months ago

Abhishek was appointed as the assistant coach just eight months ago when Gautam Gambhir took over as the head coach. However, he has now been relieved of his responsibilities as the assistant coach.

Along with him, fielding coach T. Dilip and strength and conditioning coach Soham Desai have also been sacked. Apart from this, a staff member who used to massage the players in the team has also been sacked.

Abhishek worked with Gambhir in KKR

Rahul Dravid's tenure ended after the T20 World Cup 2024. After this, BCCI appointed Gambhir as the head coach. Gambhir had associated his teammates from Kolkata Knight Riders with the team as his assistants.

Before becoming the head coach of the Indian team, Gambhir was the mentor of KKR and at that time Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate were the support staff in the same team. Morne Morkel had worked with Gambhir in Lucknow Super Giants. He was holding the post of fielding coach since the time of Dravid.

Replacement for Abhishek and Dilip

The BCCI has not announced permanent replacements as per reports. However, the transition is already underway. Sitanshu Kotak, currently with the team setup, will continue in his role. Ryan ten Doeschate will handle fielding duties in place of Dilip. For fitness and conditioning, Adrian Le Roux who is currently with Punjab Kings will fill in for Desai.

India's performance in Border Gavaskar Trophy

Team India struggled in the Border Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. They were inconsistent on both the batting and bowling fronts as the Aussies dominated. The failure was not just about the scoreboard, but the manner in which the team collapsed under pressure.
