7 centurions on Day 1 | Vijay Hazare Trophy 2022

The Day 1 of the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2022 saw seven tons. Priyank Panchal, the Gujarat captain scored 136 as they put up a huge score of 337/6 against Manipur. Riyan Parag scored his maiden List-A ton against Rajasthan. Parag scored 117 runs against a Rajasthan bowling lineup comprising Rahul Chahar, Ravi Bishnoi and Kamlesh Nagarkoti. Meanwhile, Ruturaj Gaikwad's dream form in domestic cricket continued as he scored another century for Maharashtra. Gaikwad remained not out on 124 while chasing 219 against Railways.

Another star performer from Day 1 with the bat was Aijnkya Rahane (59*) who guided Mumbai in a small chase (123) against Bengal. Rinku Singh also shone with the bat as the southpaw scored 82 to take UP to 242 in the first inning against Tripura. Harvik Desai looked good with the bat as well for his 68 at the top of the order for Saurashtra. Meantime, Negi's 80 helped Uttrakhand win a great match against Odisha. They were 27/4 within the first five overs of the chase. But, Negi's inning was the saviour for the North-Indian team.

Virat Singh showed his hitting abilities against a much weaker side in Sikkim. Virat scored 75 as Jharkhand put up 309/3 in the first inning. But it was Himachal Pradesh vs Hyderabad match which produced three centuries. K. Rohit Rayudu (156) and Tilak Verma (132) scored two tons for Hyderabad. On the other hand, A.R. Kumar's 103 and Prasant Chopra's 70 went in vain as HP lost by 17 runs in the VJD method.

Madhya Pradesh's Yash Dubey's 121 was not enough for them as Abdul Samad (66) and Abid Mushtaq's 42 off 19 balls took Jammu and Kashmir home at the end of the day.

Koitan, Ishant Sharma, Shreyas Gopal shine with the ball | Five-for for Rahul Shukla and Akash Singh

Bowlers did not have a great day on the first day of the Vijay Hazare trophy 2022 except for a few. Rahul Shukla of Jharkhand took 5/19 in 7 overs to dismiss Sikkim for just 116 runs. Akash Singh's 5/38 went in vain as Nagaland lost by 167 runs against Baroda.

But, it was Tanush Koitan of Mumbai who started the day in the best possible way for his team. Koitan troubled Bengal batters and picked up 4 wickets for 31 runs as Bengal was bundled out for just 121 runs. Ishant Sharma looked good after making his comeback in the white ball format after quite a long time. The Indian pacer took 3 wickets for 24 against Vidarbha.

However, Shreyas Gopal was perhaps the best all-rounder of the day with his 64 with the bat and 3/21 with the ball. Himangshu Bisht started the tournament on a great note as he took 4/26 against Odisha in a winning cause for Uttarakhand.

BCCI Domestic Season 2025-26: Key dates, fixtures and schedule

The BCCI has announced the schedule for the new BCCI domestic season 2025-26. BCCI not only announced the schedule for domestic tournaments, but also announced changes to the format of several key tournaments, including the Ranji Trophy.

The BCCI domestic season 2025-26 has been started with the Duleep Trophy beginning on August 28 and extended till September 15.

Changes in Ranji Trophy

The 2025-26 Ranji Trophy will be held in two phases from October 15 to February 28. Significantly, two Plate Group teams will be changed this time. Till now, two teams were promoted and relegated from the Plate Group, but now only one team will be promoted to the Elite Division and one team will be sent to the Plate Division.

The BCCI added nine new teams to the Ranji Trophy in 2018-19, including states from the Northeast. However, this decision impacted the quality of cricket in the tournament. Meghalaya played in the Elite Division last season but lost all of its matches.

To address this, the Ranji Trophy format has been modified. The BCCI has decided to implement the same promotion and relegation system for all senior and junior multi-day tournaments starting in the 2026-27 season. This decision has been taken with the aim of maintaining competition in Indian domestic cricket and improving the quality of teams.

Zonal format returns to Duleep Trophy

Before the Ranji Trophy, the domestic season has been with the Duleep Trophy, which played from August 28 to September 15. It held in a zonal format. Players selected by a zonal selection committee.

The Irani Cup will be played from October 1 to 5. India's premier domestic T20 competition, the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, will be held from November 26 to December 18. The Plate Division has also been reintroduced in this tournament.

Changes in SMAT

This season, teams will play three additional matches in the Super League round, along with the quarter-finals and semi-finals. The top teams from Group A and Group B will meet in the final.

Meanwhile, the six weakest teams from last season will play in the Plate Group. The BCCI also clarified that in all white-ball tournaments, the advancement of teams tied in the group stage will now be determined based on net run rate (NRR).

No KL Rahul, Mohammed Siraj in Duleep Trophy? BCCI writes to State Associations to include the centrally contracted players

No KL Rahul, Mohammed Siraj in Duleep Trophy? BCCI

The controversy over the key members of the Indian Test team not being selected for major domestic cricket tournaments continues to grow. Now The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has expressed strong displeasure over the exclusion of top international players like KL Rahul and Mohammed Siraj from the South Zone team for the upcoming Duleep Trophy.

After this, the Board has officially written a letter to all the state associations asking them to give priority to the selection of centrally contracted players for this opening tournament of the domestic season.

Many big names were not included

South Zone announced its team on July 27. Many big names like KL Rahul, Mohammed Siraj, Washington Sundar, Prasidh Krishna and Sai Sudharsan were not included in it.

The Duleep Trophy, which begins in Bengaluru on August 28, is considered an important platform for domestic and national level talents. The board did not like the decision of the South Zone to not include these players in the team despite their availability during the off-season.

Abey Kuruvilla wrote the email

BCCI General Manager of Cricket Operations Abey Kuruvilla addressed the issue in an email sent to zonal coordinators and state units last week. According to the reports, Kuruvilla stressed the importance of ensuring the participation of all available Indian players to maintain the prestige and competitive level of the Duleep Trophy.

Kuruvilla wrote in the email, ā€œTo uphold its prestige and ensure the highest quality of competition, it’s imperative that all currently available India players are selected for their respective zonal teams. Requesting the Zonal Convenors to ensure that all the current India players who are available to play Duleep trophy should be picked.ā€

ā€œAll players, contracted or otherwise, who make themselves available for selection into Team India, shall participate in domestic matches conducted by BCCI,ā€

ā€œIn case any player opts not to participate in any domestic cricket tournaments in spite of availability, he/she shall not be considered for selection unless a prior recommendation is obtained to skip the match/tournament from the National coach and the chairman of the selection committee, and prior approval from the BCCI. In case any leave is granted, the same shall be considered on the basis of some valid and cogent reason.ā€ the email said.

Instructions to give priority to domestic cricket

This directive is in line with the BCCI's policy of making participation of international players mandatory in domestic competitions. The board had previously warned players against giving priority to the IPL over first-class cricket and earlier this year reminded all contracted players to remain committed to the domestic calendar.

However, this instruction from BCCI has come after South Zone announced its team. It is still not clear whether the selectors will make any changes in their list or not. Tilak Verma was made the captain of the team.

Questions were raised on international players

Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Kuldeep Yadav, Akash Deep, Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh and Shreyas Iyer among many other players are expected to participate in the tournament representing their respective regions.

The state associations have previously expressed concern that the automatic inclusion of Indian stars in the regional teams overlooks Ranji players who have performed consistently throughout the season.

Many have argued that matches such as India A tours and Board President's XI would be a more suitable platform for international players, leaving regional tournaments as a rewarding avenue for domestic players.

Ranji Trophy Ajinkya Rahane steps down from Mumbai captaincy ahead of the new season

Veteran batsman Ajinkya Rahane, on Thursday, has resigned from the captaincy ahead of the upcoming Ranji Trophy season. In a message on social media, Rahane made it clear that this is the time when the team should get a chance to develop new leadership.

'I believe it’s the right time to groom a new leader'

Rahane posted on his social media account that he would not continue as Mumbai captain in Ranji Trophy but would continue to represent the side as a player.

ā€œCaptaining and winning championships with the Mumbai team has been an absolute honour. With a new domestic season ahead, I believe it’s the right time to groom a new leader, and hence I’ve decided not to continue in the captaincy role. I remain fully committed to giving my best as a player and will continue my journey with @MumbaiCricAssoc to help us win more trophies. Looking forward to the season,ā€ Rahane wrote on his X account.

Mumbai Team under Rahane's captaincy

Under Rahane's captaincy, Mumbai achieved stability and success in domestic cricket. Under his leadership, Mumbai ended a seven-year drought by winning the Ranji Trophy in 2023–24. Apart from this, he also led the team to victory in the Irani Cup in 2024-25 and the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 2022-23. These victories took his captaincy to new heights.

Despite giving up captaincy, the 37-year-old, who has scored over 14,000 runs in 201 first-class matches, made it clear that he is not retiring. He will continue to represent Mumbai as a batsman in all formats.

Rahane said that he will work for the team as a batsman with full enthusiasm and commitment. His main goal is to bring success to the team and help the new captain in his development.

Who will be the new captain?

Ranji Trophy Ajinkya Rahane steps down from Mumbai captaincy ahead of the new season

India allrounder Shardul Thakur will lead the Mumbai Ranji Trophy team for forthcoming season.

Thakur leading Mumbai was always on the cards especially after he was appointed as West Zone captain for Duleep Trophy. It is understood that the Mumbai senior selection committee spoke to Rahane before the season and had taken his feedback about future captaincy candidates.

Thakur has been playing a vital role in Mumbai’s Ranji success over the past few years. In addition to wickets, he has also bailed out Mumbai with lower-order runs. He also scored 505 runs for Mumbai last season where he slammed one hundred. He also took 35 wickets in nine matches.

Most Ducks by an Indian in Tests

The duck - dismissal without scoring a single run, is a humiliation that haunts all cricketers, but it’s become an almost expected feature for the names that appear here. Some were genuine bowling greats, with match-winning spells and legendary careers with the ball. But when it came to contributing runs, they routinely exited without troubling the scorers.

In this article, we will take a look at most ducks by an Indian in Tests.

Most Ducks by an Indian in Tests

1. Ishant Sharma | 34

Most Ducks by an Indian in Tests

Ishant Sharma tops our list by securing 34 ducks with no runs, and his name appears among the Indian players who have scored the most ducks in Test cricket. Ishant Sharma was known for his lion-hearted spells and his remarkable longevity as a fast bowler. With the bat, however, his long limbs and hesitant stroke play made for awkward viewing.

Ishant's tally of 34 ducks in just 142 innings shows just how frequently he was dismissed for zero. In the 102 matches that Sharma has played for India, he has managed to score a total of just 751 runs at an average close to 7.5.

2. Zaheer Khan | 29

Most Ducks by an Indian in Tests

Zaheer Khan was one of India’s most dependable fast bowlers in the 2000s and early 2010s, especially overseas. A left-arm swing bowler capable of troubling the best batsmen, his contributions with the ball were immense.

During his career that lasted from 2000 to 2014, Zaheer Khan, however played a total of 1231 runs at an average of 11.95 and was dismissed on 29 occasions without scoring any runs.

3. Jasprit Bumrah | 28

Most Ducks by an Indian in Tests

Jasprit Bumrah might be the spearhead of India’s bowling attack, but his form with the bat is not so well. In the previous ENG vs IND Test series, Bumrah recorded his sixth duck in seven innings. Since the Boxing Day Test at Melbourne in December 2024, Bumrah’s scores read: 0, 0, 22, 0, 0, 0, 0.

Bumrah played a total of 341 runs at an average of 6.55 and was dismissed on 28 occasions without scoring any runs.

4. Bhagwath Chandrasekhar | 23

Most Ducks by an Indian in Tests

Bhagwath Chandrasekhar was ranked as the worst batsman in the history of Test cricket. He registered 23 ducks from 80 innings, averaging one duck every four innings.

But if one were to form a eleven of No 11s who have played Test cricket, Chandrasekhar would be the No 11 in this team as well. Chandra played 58 Tests and took 242 wickets, an outstanding match-winning bowler for India. But in these 58 Tests he scored only 167 runs. That meant he took more wickets than he scored runs. His Test batting average was 4.07.

Bishen Singh Bedi is 5th on the list with 20 ducks during his illustrous test career that saw many twists and turns. Not known much as a batsman, he was a tailender who didn’t know much about batting. But however he ranks as one of India’s best spinners who bowled with a big heart and known for his deceiving flighted balls.

During his career that lasted from 1964 to 1979, Bedi played a total of only 167 runs at an average of 4.07 and was dismissed on 20 occasions without scoring any runs.

BCCI has announced the schedule for the upcoming Duleep Trophy 2025 which begins on August 28 in Bengaluru. After this, the announcement of the names of team captains has also started. This time also, like the old format, teams from four zones will participate in it. Now, as per the latest developments, the squad of West Zone has been announced.

While Shardul Thakur has been made the new captain of the team, Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara have not found a place in the team.

Shreyas and Jaiswal will play under Shardul's captaincy

The West Zone team has been announced for the Duleep Trophy. This time the captaincy has been handed over to Shardul Thakur. Shreyas Iyer and Yashasvi Jaiswal will be seen playing under the captaincy of Shardul Thakur. However, Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara, who have been playing continuously for this team, are not seen in the squad this time.

Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane last played a Test match for India in 2023. Pujara played a crucial role in India’s Test series victories in Australia in 2018-19 and 2020-21. Notably, Rahane captained Team India to a memorable Border-Gavaskar Trophy win in 2020-21 despite several key players being unavailable.

Shreyas Iyer set to available for West Zone

Shreyas Iyer had made himself available for the upcoming Duleep Trophy. The middle-order batter has played 14 Test matches for India. However, he has not been part of the Test setup since February 2024, when he last featured against England.

Iyer was a key figure in India’s Champions Trophy-winning campaign in Dubai earlier this year. He also scored 480 runs in the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy at an average of 68.57, including two centuries. He continued his form into the IPL, where he led Punjab Kings to their first final in over a decade.
