Who will be the best team in the IPL 2023?

The 2023 edition of the Indian Premier League is set to arrive soon as the teams have now finalized their squads after the auction. The 16th edition of the IPL is expected to begin in April with the Final to be scheduled in May. With no restrictions due to COVID-19, the tournament is expected to return to its original home and away games format.

The Gujurat Titans are the defending champions, and they will be eager to defend their title. They clearly had one of the best squads last year and they have had timely additions to their squad. But the other teams have also tweaked their teams and some of them have made big splurges in the market. However, it remains to see if that is enough to stop the Titans from repeating again this year.

The Titans remain the team to beat

The Gujurat Titans were one of the two teams who made their inaugural appearance in the league last year. And they immediately hit the ground running by winning the title in their first season. The team led by the newly appointed Indian T20 team captain Hardik Pandya finished as the table toppers and made no mistakes in the playoffs.

The team is loaded with superstars in all its departments with Pandya, Shubman Gill, David Miller, Rashid Khan, and so on. They had very little weakness across all fronts and they have several matchwinners loaded in their squad with Rahul Tewatia, Mohammed Shami, Wridhiman Saha, and others coming up in crucial situations. The Pandya-led Titans will be one of the favourites to win it this year and the other teams will have to put up a herculean effort to take the title away from them.

This is Royal Challengers Bangalore's best chance to date

One of the biggest stories in IPL history has been the case of the Royal Challengers Bangalore and their search for the elusive title. The team from garden city is one of the most loved teams but despite 15 years, they are yet to win their first title. But this time, it's a different story. That's because, for the first time in their history, the Royal Challengers have seemed to solve their biggest concern, their bowling attack. Their squad is well-balanced with some of the best bowlers in the world in their lineup.

RCB will also be boosted by Virat Kohli's recent uptick in form. The King had one of his worst seasons last time around, but he has been in superb touch in the last few months. With the amount of talent and the perfect balance in the squad, RCB will have its best chance to date. They will hope that history does not repeat itself and they fall short of expectations again.

The old powerhouses will be looking to revamp their identity

The two of the most successful sides in IPL history, Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings both had terrible outings last time around. Last year, the two teams finished at the bottom of the table and they were nowhere close to being competitive. Even though they seemed to have retained a majority of their squad, both teams went big in the auction to address their core issues.

CSK went all in on the England skipper, Ben Stokes. One of the best players in the world, Stokes has produced countless match-winning performances time and time again. He has performed on the biggest occasions and CSK broke the bank for him as they bought him for a whopping INR 16.25 crore. The MS Dhoni-led side will be looking to forget last season and start a new chapter in their illustrious history.

The Mumbai Indians also had a miserable campaign last time around. Their superstars failed to produce consistently last time out. Their squad is deep and loaded but MI failed to find the right balance and strategy. Like CSK, the Mumbai Indians also went big in the auction as they bought Cameron Green for INR 17.5 crore. Green has been rising through the Australian ranks over the last few years, and MI felt he was the answer to their puzzle.

Both these teams will be keen to forget last season and you can bet that one or both of these sides will have massive outings this time around. As history has told us, it would be very unwise to bet against these two giants. And if you decide to and want to use crypto as your preferred mode of payment, here is the best site for sports betting using crypto. With the IPL fast approaching, you would be wise to get your bets in early as things are expected to heat up soon.

There might be a few surprises as well

Last year's runners-up, Rajasthan Royals will have been disappointed to fall short at the biggest stage. Like several other teams, the Royals have retained a large part of their squad with Jos Butler leading from the front. The England star has been in tremendous form and RR will hope they can bank on him again. They also made a smart addition as they went out and bought Jason Holder in the auction.

Punjab Kings broke the IPL record as bought England all-rounder Sam Curran for INR 18.5 Crore. They came very close to making the playoffs last time around and they will hope that Curran takes them to the promised land. The Kings are one of the three teams who are yet to win a title in 15 years. They have been the most disappointing team in IPL history and they will be keen to make a statement and break their curse.

Meanwhile, the Sunrisers Hyderabad made the most of the auction as they bought as many as 13 players in the auction. SRH have been in rebuild mode for the last few years and they went big on Harrk Brook and Mayank Agarwal. They have a bunch of promising talent and they seem to have the right amount of proven veterans. But the key for them will be to find the right balance in their squad.

The other new team in the league, Lucknow Super Giants also made the playoffs last year. But they were too reliant on their top order and this seemed to cost them quite a few games. In order to fix this, they went out and got Nicolas Pooran for INR 16 Crore. Despite no significant new signings, LSG has a strong team and they will definitely be a force to reckon with.

The Delhi Capitals are the other team that is yet to win a title in 15 years. The loss of Rishabh Pant to injury is a massive blow to the team. They did manage to get Manish Pandey and Rilee Rossouw in the auction. But they still are yet to name a captain and they just don't seem to have enough in their squad to take them all the way.

The Kolkata Knight Riders, the third most successful team in IPL history had a terrible start last time around but they made a massive push during the end. However, that wasn't quite enough to overcome their poor start. They still have a strong team and they have a few nice additions to the squad. It will be interesting to how the two-time winners will fare this season.

The slogan of the Indian Premier League is "Yatra Pratibha Avsara Prapnotihi," which translates to "Where talent meets opportunity." It explains a lot about the motto of the tournament as it provides a platform for young cricketers to showcase their talent to the entire world.

Shreevats Goswami from Royal Challengers Bangalore became the first player to win the Emerging Player of the Season award in IPL 2008 while Rohit Sharma won it in the 2009 edition playing for Deccan Chargers. Mustafizur Rahman is the only foreign player to claim the award so far, winning it in the 2016 season.

MI's Saurabh Tiwary won the award in 2010 while CSK's Iqbal Abdullah won it in 2011. Both players struggled after getting the award as they failed to replicate their heroics going ahead in their careers.

The other prominent names to win the award are Sanju Samson (2013), Axar Patel (2014), Shreyas Iyer (2015), Rishabh Pant (2018), Shubman Gill (2019) and Ruturaj Gaikwad (2021). Speedster Umran Malik won the award in the 2022 season. Rajasthan Royals opener Yashasvi Jaiswal won the IPL 2023 Emerging Player of the Season Award. SRH's Nitish Kumar Reddy won the IPL 2024 Emerging Player of the Season Award.

IPL Emerging Player Winners List: From 2008 to 2023:

KKR's Iqbal Abdulla was one of the key players in Gautam Gambhir's first season at the franchise. The left-arm spinner picked up 16 wickets in the tournament and took the Knight Riders to the playoffs, a first in their history. Abdulla was a very strict bowler who didn't concede many runs. He was awarded the Emerging Player Award but wasn't able to replicate those performances in the next season.

IPL 2012: Mandeep Singh (Kings XI Punjab)

Punjab Kings were known as Kings XI Punjab back then and Mandeep Singh was a key performer for them in 2012. Sanju Samson won the award in 2013. It was his breakthrough season at Rajasthan Royals and the Kerala-born scored 206 runs in that year. Rajasthan failed to advance to the playoffs but Samson was their brightest spark that season. He continued that performance in the following seasons and now he has become the skipper of that franchise. He also led Rajasthan to the Playoffs this season but couldn't qualify for the Final.

IPL 2014: Axar Patel (Kings XI Punjab)

Axar Patel was 20 years old in the 2014 season and he was exceptional to watch. Axar picked up 17 wickets in that season and Punjab also went to the Final of the tournament. Interestingly, that was the last time Punjab ever qualified for the playoffs. But, Axar has been one of the most brilliant spin bowlers in the history of the IPL. He currently plays for Delhi Capitals.

IPL 2015: Shreyas Iyer (Delhi Daredevils)

He scored four half-centuries that season with a highest of 83 against Mumbai Indians. He is currently captaining KKR and they are in the Final of IPL 2024.

IPL 2016: Mustafizur Rahman (Sunrisers Hyderabad)

Mustafizur Rahman is IPL's only foreign Emerging Player so far. The Bangladeshi pacer was phenomenal for Sunrisers in 2016 and was a key contributor in their title-winning campaign. He picked up 17 wickets in the season and had one of the best economies (6.90 rpo) that year. He has contributed so much doesn't matter which team it is. He played in the IPL 2024 season with Chennai and impressed the fans once again.

Thampi picked up 11 wickets in that season and the Lions played the playoffs. However, they couldn't win the title. Basil wasn't able to replicate those performances in the following seasons that's why he is without a team right now.

IPL 2018: Rishabh Pant (Delhi Capitals)

Rishabh Pant scored scored 684 runs in the IPL 2018 season

His best knock that year came against SRH when he scored a superb 128 off just 63 balls. The left-handed wicketkeeper batter has grown so much since then and is now the captain of Delhi. He has won them so many matches and also is a key player of the Indian squad in all three formats.

Gaikwad was 24 that season and since then he has become a key part of Chennai's squad. He is also the captain of Chennai Super Kings.

IPL 2022: Umran Malik (Sunrisers Hyderabad)

Umran Malik caused a lot of distress among batters in IPL 2022 with his raw pace. The SRH pacer was excellent with 22 wickets for them that season and won the Emerging Player Award. He also got an India call-up after his IPL heroics but couldn't do the same there. He also had a poor 2023 campaign in the IPL and due to that, didn't get enough opportunities in the 2024 season.

IPL 2023: Yashasvi Jaiswal (Rajasthan Royals)

Highest Successful Run Chases in IPL History

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has produced some of the most thrilling matches in cricket history, with some teams successfully chasing down mammoth targets to win games. Rajasthan Royals were the first team to chase down a 200-plus total when they scored 217/7 in 19.5 overs to overcome Deccan Chargers’ 214/5 in the IPL 2008. It was only the ninth match of the league. Over the course of the next 12 years, a lot of sides chased down totals over 200+, but none came anywhere close to scaling what RR achieved in 2008.

That record stood for a solid 12 years before the Royals eclipsed it again in IPL 2020 when they hunted down Kings XI Punjab’s 223/2 with 226/6. The mark stood for five years. Currently, Punjab Kings hold the record for the highest successful run chases in IPL history.

Here is a list of the Highest Successful Run Chases in IPL History.

Punjab Kings hold the record for the highest successful run chases in IPL history. PBKS successfully chased down a target of 262 against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens in IPL 2024. Tasked with chasing down a daunting target of 262 in front of a vociferous away crowd in Kolkata, PBKS had their task cut out for them. However, the Punjab team defied all odds.

Player of the Match Jonny Bairstow scored an unbeaten 48-ball 108, while Shashank scored an unbeaten 68 off 28 balls as Punjab pulled off the greatest run chase in IPL history.

In fact, Punjab Kings’ successful run chase against Kolkata Knight Riders is the only time a team has chased down a score of 250 or more in IPL history. It is also the highest successful run chase in T20 cricket as a whole.

2. Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Punjab Kings (2025) | 246 Runs

Highest Successful Run Chases in IPL History

Sunrisers Hyderabad are second on the list of highest successful run chases in IPL history and coincidentally, it came against Punjab Kings in IPL 2025. After PBKS posted 245/6 in the first innings, SRH chased down the target by reaching 247/2 in 18.3 overs with Abhishek Sharma playing a starring role with a 55-ball 141. Abhishek hit a 40-ball century, making it one of the fastest in IPL history.

Punjab started strong with an explosive opening stand from Prabhsimran Singh and young Priyansh Arya. The two added 66 runs in just 24 balls, giving the team a perfect start. After Prabhsimran fell for 42, captain Shreyas Iyer took charge, smashing a half-century in just 22 balls. Nehal Wadhera supported him well, and the Kings crossed 150 runs within 12 overs.

The strong foundation was capped off in style by Marcus Stoinis, who cleared the ropes four times in the closing overs, helping Punjab finish at 245, their highest total of the season so far and a testament to the batting unit’s depth and intent. But Sunrisers Hyderabad responded with a brilliant opening partnership between Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head. Their 171-run stand helped them chase down the target successfully.

3. Royal Challengers Bengaluru vs Lucknow Super Giants (2025) | 228 Runs

Highest Successful Run Chases in IPL History

Stand-in captain Jitesh Sharma's unbeaten 85 led RCB to chase down 228 runs against Lucknow Super Giants. After the win, they sealed a top-two finish in the very last league game of IPL 2025. This is also RCB's highest-ever successful chase in IPL history and they will now play in Qualifier 1 against Punjab Kings. Records galore for RCB don't stop there, as they have ended up winning all 7 away games in the regular season, which is just remarkable.

The chase saw significant contributions from Virat Kohli and Phil Salt in the powerplay, followed by Jitesh Sharma and Mayank Agarwal's unbeaten partnership. Agarwal scored 41 not out to support Sharma's match-winning innings.

Earlier, Lucknow Super Giants posted a formidable 227/3, powered by captain Rishabh Pant's spectacular 118.

4. Rajasthan Royals vs Punjab Kings (2020) | 224 Runs

He smashed 5 sixes in an over against Sheldon Cottrell which changed the whole game.

5. Rajasthan Royals vs Kolkata Knight Riders (2024) | 224 Runs

Rajasthan Royals equalled the highest successful run chase in the IPL recorded by them in 2020, when they beat Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens. In a battle for the position at the top of the IPL 2024 standings, KKR managed 223/6 on the back of Sunil Narine’s maiden T20 century. For the Royals, Avesh Khan and Kuldeep Sen took two wickets each.

In the run chase, Jos Buttler stood tall with an unbeaten 107 off just 60 balls, steering his team over the line on the last ball. The Royals were on the backfoot at 121/6 in the 13th over. But a cameo from Rovman Powell and some late power-hitting from Buttler got the Royals home.

Interestingly, Punjab Kings surpassed this record 10 days later against the same opponent at the same venue, when they successfully chased 262.

6. Mumbai Indians vs Chennai Super Kings (2021) | 219 Runs

Highest Successful Run Chases in IPL History

Mumbai Indians pulled off a stunning 4-wicket victory over their arch-rivals Chennai Super Kings in a match in 2021. Ambati Raydu & Faf du Plessis played blistering innings to put up that mammoth total at Delhi.

Chasing down the target of 219 runs, Mi didn't have a good start. Kieron Pollard's unbeaten 87 from 34 balls, including 6 boundaries and 8 sixes, played the most pivotal role in securing the win. He was also the best bowler for Mumbai in that match. Pollard conceded only 12 runs in his 2 overs and scalped 2 huge wickets.

7. Rajasthan Royals vs Deccan Chargers (2008) | 215 Runs

With 17 needed off the final over and 4 needed off the final ball, power-hitter Abdul Samad smashed a six off the last ball to help Sunrisers register a memorable win.

Chasing a target of 215, Sunrisers batting depth came to the fore as first Rahul Tripathi set the tone before Abhishek served another reminder of his growing stature as a future India star. The way he stood up and swung Rishi Dhawan and later carted spinner Harpreet Brar for two huge sixes was truly symbolic of his authority, class and timing against pace and spin alike.
