Mexico will have to put their pre-World Cup struggles behind them and push forward into the main event as they begin their adventure in Qatar with a matchup against Robert Lewandowski and Poland.

El Tri have been below standards for some time now, leading to pressure on head coach Gerardo Martino to deliver results at the World Cup in the hope of salvaging his job.

Poland were in the same boat through the summer but managed to lift spirits with a few positive friendly results just before the World Cup, and they could be primed for a positive showing.

These two teams will be battling with Saudi Arabia for the likely second qualifying spot behind expected Group C winners Argentina.

Team News:

Mexico:

Raul Jimenez has not made a competitive appearance for club or country since August. After a disrupted preseason, the Wolves striker took it upon himself to continue his recovery in Mexico with the national team's medical staff.

Jimenez played the second half of El Tri's friendly against Sweden six days before their World Cup opener. Whether Gerardo Martino risks the number nine from the off remains to be seen.

Poland:

Czeslaw Michniewicz is expected to have a fully fit squad to select from when he mulls over the best personnel for his hybrid system. There was a scare when Aston Villa's Matty Cash felt his shoulder on the final weekend of Premier League football but the Slough-born full-back quickly quashed any concerns.

"I've hurt my shoulder a bit," he said post-game. "I sort of dislocated it last season and I think I've just tweaked it a bit. But nah, I'm ready. I'll do anything to play in the World Cup. So, I'm fine."

Mexico vs Poland: Head to Head:

Poland and Mexico are on an even footing as far as their head-to-head record is concerned and have won three games apiece out of a total of eight international games played between the two sides.

The previous meeting between the two teams took place in 2017 and ended in a 1-0 victory for Mexico. Raul Jimenez scored the winning goal on the day and will aim to make a similar impact this week.
