The change in name was already announced by club owner Sanjiv Goenka after the Mariners beat Bengaluru FC in the ISL 2022-23 final at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Goa, earlier this year. There have been a few causes of contention between supporters and the administration ever since Mohun Bagan merged with ATK in January 2020. The RPSG Group is the largest owner in the new club together with Mohun Bagan Football Club (India) Private Limited to become ATK Mohun Bagan FC.

Supporters expressed their feelings recently, claiming that the club's legacy and history were frequently being harmed. The ATKMB supporters had taken to the streets of Dharmatala, Kolkata. They were shouting anti-ATK chants in front of the Mohun Bagan Athletic Club camp. They also marched with signs in front of CESC House.

The Mariners were not pleased with the addition of the ATK prefix to the name of their beloved club. Mohun Bagan is of course one of India's most renowned football clubs. Green and Maroons supporters have been vocal in their demand for a new moniker. There have been countless demonstrations, and the supporters' endurance may now be recognised. The Mohun Bagan football team will use the brand name 'Mohun Bagan Super Giants' from next season.
