Merih Demiral became a record holder for hitting the fastest-ever goal to be scored in a Euro knockout stage. The action-laden nature of the Euro 2024 clash between Turkey and Austria went into overdrive in just 57 seconds of the match, setting the stage for a truly memorable encounter.
How the Goal Was Scored
The ball was kicked off with an early corner by Turkey's Arda Güler. Clinical Güler whipped the ball into the crowded Austrian penalty area – there was some chaos in the area, with the ball eventually nearly sneaking its way into the net for an own goal, but Austria goalkeeper Patrick Pentz came up with a desperate save right on his line.
But Pentz's effort was not good enough to clear the ball from danger. Merih Demiral, excellently positioned among the scramble, stole the opportunity. He pounced on the loose ball with quick reflexes and fired it into the roof of the net, handing Turkey explosive leadership in under a minute.
Scoring a record high
That goal by Demiral not only provided an early advantage to Turkey but also broke the record for the fastest goal in the history of the European Championship knockout rounds.
