Barcelona News: Supporters Approach Court Over Lionel Messi's Transfer To PSG Last Summer

In Barcelona News, Lionel Messi made a move to Paris in the summer of 2021 after spending two decades of his football career with Barcelona.

In Barcelona News, Lionel Messi made a move to Paris in the summer of 2021 after spending almost two decades of his football career with Barcelona.

As per the Associated Press, a small group of Barcelona fans is now seeking legal action against Messi's transfer to the Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), citing the move as unfair, and jeopardizing Barcelona's finances.

A Luxembourg court listened to the arguments on Tuesday, where the fans argued that Messi's move to Paris was an example of inefficient financial fair play rules in places like France.

The European Court will now decide whether the European Commission to consider opening an investigation into the complaint. The arguments suggested that Messi's move out of Catalonia to Paris didn't adhere to European laws on state aid.

The hearing was understood to be an appeal as the European Commission earlier rejected an original claim. It lasted for three hours on Tuesday, in front of a former president of the court, Judge Marc Jaeger.

Meanwhile, the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner moved out of Barcelona on a free transfer and joined PSG on a three-year deal worth £94m. It was considered to be the most high-profile transfer in modern football.

It is pertinent to mention that the European football governing body, UEFA found the Parc des Princes-based club to have breached financial fair play rules during the transfer and asked for a financial settlement of €65m.

As per the arguments made by the Barca supporters' group, Messi's transfer should not have been allowed as it dealt damage to the competitive environment in continental football. However, they are now hopeful for an investigation into the matter by the European Commission.

What has been said so far?

As per The Guardian, notes provided by the court suggested that the complaint by the fan group can make the court overturn an original decision and instruct the commission to "order the French Football Federation to immediately cease any distortion of competition and to bring itself into compliance with Uefa club licensing and financial fair play regulations."

Issam Abdelmouine, one of the parties on the case, alongside the group shed light on the matter during a conversation with AP.

"We are asking the commission to profoundly change the system. Clubs like Barcelona are facing unfaithful competition and losing lots of money and risking going private, and then members will disappear," he explained.

The Barça supporters' case argues that the French football authorities should never have allowed the Messi transfer to go through and that it distorted the competitive environment in continental football.

But in calling for an investigation by the European Commission into the deal, they are also hoping to bring the world of football finance away from the game's governing bodies and into the scope of Europe's lawmakers for the first time.

According to notes provided by the European Court, the full claim by the fan group would lead to the original decision by the court being overturned and the commission instructed to "order the French Football Federation to immediately cease any … distortion of competition and to bring itself into compliance with Uefa club licensing and financial fair play regulations".

It also calls on the commission to instigate proceedings against the French government, for "illegal state aid to PSG and the French football clubs in national and European competitions".

The case was heard against the backdrop of a dispute over the future of European football. Despite the collapse of the Super League last year, there is constant tension between clubs, competitions and their governing bodies.

The three remaining "super league" clubs – Barcelona, Juventus and Real Madrid – have taken Uefa to court claiming the governing body acts as a monopoly.

PSG have insisted the signing of Messi did not breach FFP regulations and on Tuesday a source said: "There is nothing to comment on – PSG isn't even a party to the case."

The Ligue de Football Professionnel, which runs France's major leagues and operates under the authority of the FFF, was approached for comment.

Internazionale won two of their three trophies back in the 1960s. Since then, they have been having a disappointing year in and year out. Their recent UCL title was in 2009-10 when Jose Mourinho took charge. They were not the favourites in that season, yet they went on to win the UCL.

Jose Mourinho at that time was emerging as one of the best coaches in the world. He played typical defensive football, frustrating his opponents, which created mistakes. They capitalised on those mistakes and went on to win their 3rd Champions League. They defeated the heavyweights Barcelona in the semis and Bayern Munich in the final to clinch their title.

Most Golden Boots win in football history

The European Golden Boot or European Golden Shoe is awarded annually to the leading goal scorer in league matches in the top divisions of European football. First awarded in 1968, this prestigious honour is judged on a points-based system.

Golden Boot: Rules

The winner is not simply the player with the most goals in the season. There is a weighting system where the goals scored in the top-ranked leagues are worth more. Players from the five highest ranked leagues according to UEFA (based on results of each league's clubs in European competition over the previous five seasons) get 2 points per scored goal, leagues ranked 6-22 get 1.5 points per goal and the remaining leagues get 1 point per goal.

The top five ranked leagues in 2022 were Germany, Spain, England, Italy, and France. The winners usually come from the top-ranked leagues.

Historical Overview

Between 1968 and 1991, the award was given by L'Équipe to the highest goalscorer in any European league. Between 1991 and 1996 there were no official awards given to the top goal scorers, but the leading goalscorer for those years have since been recognized.

Since the 1996–97 season, the award, given by European Sports Media, has used a weighted points system.
