Comparing Klopp and Guardiola net spend at Liverpool and Man City

Both Klopp and Guardiola have clashed repeatedly over the past five years as Liverpool and City have locked horns.

Oct 17, 2022, 6:40 AM3 min read

Both Klopp and Guardiola have clashed repeatedly over the past five years as Liverpool and City have locked horns in a number of different competitions.

And, with both Klopp and Guardiola with teams also competing for the FA Cup, League Cup and Champions League, both managers will have to continue rotating their squads heavily in order to get the best out of their sides.

That requires huge depth in quality, which both have achieved through purchasing players available in the transfer market.

It's no secret that Guardiola has splashed the cash, and even he admits it's the route of his success in Manchester. "We have a lot of money to buy a lot of incredible players", he said in February 2021.

"There are many more things – first of all, an incredibly strong organisation, good, incredible, lovely people, the backroom staff, the staff and players especially but when you achieve what this club has achieved in four years, winning a lot of games, you need to have the top players.

"You can win one title with average players, but to win a lot of titles you need top, top, top players. And top players cost a lot of money."

Klopp has also admitted that huge money is needed to compete at the top level but also stressed he felt they needed to sell to buy.

"It's a wealthy club with no problems but the policy here is clear. We spend what we earn, if we earn more, we can spend more. If we earn less, we can spend less," he said earlier this year.

"I think it's not a secret but the situation in this club here is that our transfers have to hit the ground because we cannot make a £40million or £50million signing and then in the end we think 'Well if he's playing it's not so important or whatever.'"

But how much money have both spent? We went through and looked at Transfermarkt to work out the net spend of both Klopp and Guardiola order to bring you the numbers, along with their five biggest purchases and sales.

Pedri, the young FC Barcelona midfielder, has drawn serious interest from the reigning Premier League champions, Manchester City, who are reportedly ready to offer a whopping €100 million for the Spanish midfielder.

According to El Nacional, former Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola, who is currently at the helm of Man City, has conveyed his interest to the Club's upper echelons to rope in the 22-year-old midfielder.

Pedri has been enjoying a great season at FC Barcelona, having scored 5 goals and provided 7 assists in 44 appearances for the Catalan giants this season. However, his contribution goes beyond the goal involvements, which shows why he has won eight Man of the Match awards in his last ten games for the club.

The 22-year-old midfielder is currently on a mega five-year contract with Barcelona that runs until June 2030. Pedri's contract also includes a release clause set at €1 billion, implying his utmost importance in building the long-term planning of FC Barcelona.

However, Pedri is currently valued at €120 million, according to transfermarkt, which is significantly higher than what Manchester City are keen to offer.

The English club has reportedly assessed all the financial aspects and feasibilities of the bid and are prepared to put forward a €100 million transfer fee offer to Barcelona.

Despite the reports, Pedri has not shown any interest in leaving the Blaugrana colours since joining the club from Las Palmas in September 2019, whereas Barcelona will also not be very keen to let Pedri leave.

With the potential departure of key midfielder Kevin De Bruyne said to be imminent, Pep Guardiola is looking to rejuvenate his midfield structure while keeping an eye on Pedri. Nico Gonzalez, another former Barcelona midfielder, was acquired by Man City in February 2025.

There is no assurance that he would accept the position at Real Madrid if it were offered, though, as he declined to leave his position at Bayer Leverkusen when the Liverpool position became available last year. That appears to be the case with Jurgen Klopp as well. But there is still a chance to connect with his former star Trent Alexander Arnold, who is rumored to be very close to joining Real Madrid.

Liverpool 'would encourage' Darwin Nunez's exit if Saudi interest renews

According to reports, Liverpool would encourage Darwin Nunez to leave the club if Saudi Arabian clubs renew their interest in the Uruguayan striker.

Liverpool 'would encourage' Darwin Nunez's exit if Saudi interest renews-sportzpoint.com

Liverpool FC is reportedly on the verge of arranging Darwin Nunez's departure from Anfield this summer if the Saudi Arabian revives its interest in the striker.

The Uruguayan striker had moved to the Reds from Portuguese giants Benfica in a deal worth up to £85 million back in the summer transfer window of 2022.

With a struggling season continuing for him at the Merseyside club, Nunez is believed to be out of new coach Arne Slot's plans and will look to rejuvenate his career in the Gulf.

Nunez may leave Liverpool in the upcoming transfer window

Nunez's Liverpool career has been affected by difficulties, as he has found it hard to establish himself in the club throughout his early years.

In his three years at the Merseyside club, he has scored 40 goals in 136 games across all competitions, but this season has been the most disappointing so far for the 25-year-old, as he has scored just seven times across all competitions.

With the direction of new head coach Arne Slot, Nunez has found himself out of favor, another contributing factor to speculation about his future.

Renowned Football Transfer journalist Duncan Castles broke the news on the latest episode of 'The Transfers Podcast' that Liverpool would accept a big Saudi Arabian offer and would be willing to urge Nunez to leave if they come back for him. Castles stated:

Liverpool would be happy if the Saudis came in and would encourage a move for Nunez. They would like to get some kind of significant return on the initial €75 million that they paid Benfica three years ago.

“From the Saudi perspective, [Nunez] still has that ability to be a name within the Saudi game and to deliver goals with his physicality. Interestingly, I’m told that his girlfriend, Lorena Manas, who is the ex-wife of former Barcelona player Aleix Vidal, has been working with agents to explore opportunities elsewhere.

“So it looks like this is both sides pushing against the same door with Nunez, or at least Nunez’s partner, encouraging him to look for a move and Liverpool happy to sell the player with a strong, affluent potential buyer in Saudi Arabia.

Interestingly, it had been hinted that Saudi Pro League club Al Nassr had made a substantial annual deal of €35 million towards Nunez back in January, having already made an offer of £58 million for the forward.

According to reports, Nunez's girlfriend, Lorena Manas, has also been working closely with agents to look into possible transfers in mutual consent, implying a joint pressure for a potential move.
