One of the most prestigious competitions in South America is all set to start on June 13. Copa America 2021 will kick off proceedings with Brazil vs Venezuela in the first group stage match. The South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) had to make changes to the original schedule because of the pandemic. Argentina could not host the tournament because of the rising covid-19 cases in the country. However, Colombia had other problems. The joint host could not host the tournament because of the ongoing protests against the government in the country. Keeping all this in mind the CONMEBOL announced that Brazil will host the tournament. The last edition of Copa America in 2019 also took place in Brazil. But you can also use the Bluechip casino login to watch broadcasts and bet on soccer. Postponed from last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the competition will have 10 teams participating in it. Australia and Qatar withdrew from the competition because of their tight fixture.

With the revised structure, the 10-team Copa America will have two groups of five teams each:

Group A

  • Argentina
  • Uruguay
  • Chile
  • Paraguay
  • Bolivia

Group B

  • Brazil
  • Colombia
  • Ecuador
  • Peru
  • Venezuela

Out of the ten teams, eight teams will advance to the quarterfinals. This means one from each group will not move on to the knockout stage.

Group A is a much tougher group than Group B. Three of the five teams in group A should easily advance to the knockouts. Those teams are Argentina, Uruguay and Chile. They have much better squads than the other two. Until and unless an upset is on the cards, these teams must qualify. The real battle will be between Paraguay and Bolivia to advance to the next stage. Football superstars like Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez are expected to take part in the competition. The squads for the national teams are yet to be announced.

Group B, on the other hand, have both the champions (Brazil) and runners-up (Peru) of last season. They are very likely to advance to the next stage. Colombia is the third contender but the fourth remains hazy. Ecuador and Venezuela both have similar playing style. The battle of the fourth place in group B will be a joy to watch.

Argentina are the most decorated football-playing nation in the world. They have won every possible trophy and with Lionel Messi leading the side to their third World Cup title in 2022, they are the best team on the planet earth right now. Argentina is administered by the governing body for football in Argentina, the Argentine Football Association.

The team's World Cup–winning managers are César Luis Menotti in 1978, Carlos Bilardo in 1986, and Lionel Scaloni in 2022. Several greats have played for La Albiceleste and won trophies. They were going through a tough phase as they hadn't won a major trophy since 1993. Argentina did win two back-to-back golds in the Olympics in 2004 and 2008 but they felt many heartbreaks in the Copa America and World Cup.

They ended the drought in 2021 after winning the Copa America for the record 15th time under Scaloni. Since then, Argentina have won the Finalissima and the World Cup.

Diego Maradona led Argentina to their second World Cup title clinch eight years later, in 1986, with a 3–2 final victory over West Germany.

They reached the final in 1990 too, but were ultimately beaten 1–0 by West Germany. A couple of decades later, Argentina, led by Lionel Messi made their fifth final appearance in 2014 but lost to Germany 1–0 in extra time. In 2022, again under the leadership of Messi, Argentina reached the final. Argentina

Lionel Messi in training ahead of the final

Argentina doesn't have any injury concerns ahead of the final on Monday. The players have gotten proper rest and Scaloni will have everyone available against Colombia. Emiliano Martinez will be at the goal and face much more challenges than he has faced in Copa America 2024.

Lisandro Martinez, Romero, Nahuel Molina, and Tagliafico are set to start at the back for the defending champions. Rodrigo de Paul will get support in the midfield with Mac Allister creating opportunities in front of them.

Julian Alvarez started over Lautaro Martinez against Canada and scored a goal. Scaloni can start whoever he wants as both of them are in fine form. Angel Di Maria will probably start on the bench. It will be his last match for the national team and Scaloni will most likely bring him on in the second half.

But, he is a big game player and has always delivered for his nation so Scaloni can also give him a start over Gonzalez. Lionel Messi will start at the right and will try to score his second goal of the Copa America 2024.

Colombia

Colombia reached its third Copa America final (1975, 2001), and hopes to win its second title after being crowned champion in 2001. After a dramatic semi-final against Bielsa's Uruguay, they are now set to face the favourites and the defending champions Argentina in the final.

Colombia will miss Crystal Palace defender Daniel Munoz who was sent off against Uruguay just before the end of the first half. CONMEBOL hasn't banned any player yet so Colombia should have everyone available. Santiago Arias is set to come in for Munoz as the new right back with Sanchez, Cuesta, and Mojica being the other defenders.

Liverpool's Luis Diaz will lead the attack alongside captain James Rodriguez and Cordoba. Richard Rios is not fully fit and can be replaced by Uribe. Jefferson Lerma will take the responsibility of the midfield but he will face tough challenges against Argentina.

Angel Di Maria scored the winner in the 2008 Olympics

Di Maria made his debut for the Argentina national team in 2008, at the age of 20. He played a key role for the Argentina team that won the gold medal at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing as he scored the only goal in the final against Nigeria.

In the 2014 World Cup, Di Maria was one of the main men in the Argentina squad and played a pivotal role in Argentina's journey to the final. He scored the winning goal in the quarterfinal against Switzerland. However, he missed the final due to an injury and Argentina went on to lose the final 1-0 to Germany.

In the 2015 Copa America, Di Maria was named the Player of the Tournament, helping Argentina once again to reach the final. However, they lost to Chile on penalties. He scored a sensational goal against France in a 4–3 defeat which saw Argentina eliminated from the World Cup in the Round of 16 in 2018. Despite giving his best, he wasn't finishing at the winner's end.

Di Maria with the Copa America 2024 title

In 2008, during the Olympics in Beijing, Argentina faced Nigeria, aiming for their second gold medal in history. Lionel Messi's assist and Angel Di Maria scored the winner.

In the 2021 Copa America final, Di Maria became the hero by scoring the only goal against Brazil. He once again chipped the ball to score the winner. Argentina beat Brazil at the Maracana for the first time and lifted the trophy after 28 years of wait.

He also scored a goal in Argentina's 3-0 victory over Italy in the Finalissima 2022 at Wembley. It is the most important year in Angel Di Maria’s International career. Despite not playing most of the games in the World Cup 2022, he delivered in the final. Di Maria scored a goal and also won a penalty for the team. Argentina went on to lift the title after 36 years.

In the 2024 Copa America, he wasn't a regular starter but gave his best whenever got the opportunity. He started against Colombia in the Final and delivered a solid performance.

7 Most Successful International Football Teams

7. France - 9 major trophies

2018 World Cup

France were very close to winning the World Cup in 2022, lifting the title for the second consecutive time but they were beaten by Argentina on penalties in the final. Kylian Mbappe scored a hat-trick in the final but failed to lead his team to yet another World Cup victory.

France are seventh on this list. They have won the World Cup, Confederations Cup, and the European Championship two times. They have also tasted success in the Olympic Games and a Nations League victory in 2021 is the last title they have added to the trophy cabinet.

World Cup 2 (1998, 2018)
European Championship 2 (1984, 2000)
Olympic Games 1 (1984)
CONMEBOL - UEFA Cup of Champions 1 (1985)
Confederations Cup 2 (2001, 2003)
UEFA Nations League 1 (2021)

6. Germany - 9 major trophies

2014 World Cup

Germany's hope to win the Euro 2024 ended with Spain knocking them out of the competition in the quarter-final. They are trophyless for almost a decade now and this was a golden opportunity for them to lift a major title but it didn't happen.

Germany won their last European Championship in 1996. Their wait extends with their exit. Germany have the joint-most European Championships along with Spain but it seems like Spain will add another one to their trophy cabinet.

Joachim Low guided Germany to their fourth World Cup one decade ago when Gotze's strike decided the fate of his side against Lionel Messi's Argentina. Alongside lifting 4 World Cups and 3 Euros, Germany have also won the 1976 Olympic Games and the 2017 Confederations Cup.

World Cup 4 (1954, 1974, 1990, 2014)
European Championship 3 (1972, 1980, 1996)
Olympic Games Gold 1 (1976)
Confederations Cup 1 (2017)

5. United States - 10 major trophies

2021 Gold Cup

Surprisingly, the United States are fifth on this list. Despite not even winning a World Cup title, they are one of the most decorated footballing nations on the planet. Their best finish in the competition came in 1930, as the USA finished in third place. Back-to-back CONCACAF Nations League successes have helped USMT rise significantly in these rankings. They have won 7 Gold Cups and 3 CONCACAF Nations League titles.

CONCACAF Championship/Gold Cup 7 (1991, 2002, 2005, 2007, 2013, 2017, 2021)
CONCACAF Nations League 3 (2019/20, 2022/23, 2023/24)

4. Mexico - 14 major trophies

Mexico have won the Gold Cup nine times

Mexico too haven't won a World Cup. They are far from the best among the other teams in this list in terms of quality but still are one of the most decorated nations in the world of Football. They have always played brave football in the World Cup but have missed out on qualities.

They lifted their first trophy in 1965 and since then, they have amassed a record 12 CONCACAF Championships with the most recent coming in 2023.

The only other two tournaments Mexico have won are the Confederations Cup, which they lifted in 1999, and the Olympic Gold in 2012. Miguel Zepeda netted a brace in the Confederations Cup Final for Mexico and helped his side register a thrilling 4-3 victory against Brazil.

CONCACAF Championship/Gold Cup 12 (1965, 1971, 1977, 1993, 1996, 1998, 2003, 2009, 2011, 2015, 2019, 2023
Olympic Games 1 (2012)
Confederations Cup 1 (1999)

3. Uruguay - 19 major trophies

Uruguay won their last Copa America title in 2011

Uruguay are one of the biggest footballing nations in the World but very few people know that as they haven't lifted a trophy since 2011. Some of the best South American players of all time have come out of Uruguay.

They were the inaugural World Cup winners in 1930, before repeating the feat two decades later in 1950 by beating Brazil.

Uruguay have 15 Copa America titles and two Olympic Golds in their trophy cabinet along with those two world cups. The fans had their expectation to see their nation lift the 2024 title but it didn't happen. They were knocked out of the semi-final by Colombia and Argentina went on to lift the title for the record 16th time.

World Cup 2 (1930, 1950)
Copa America 15 (1916, 1917, 1920, 1923, 1924, 1926, 1935, 1942, 1956, 1959, 1967, 1983, 1987, 1995, 2011)
Olympic Games 2 (1924, 1928)

2. Brazil - 20 major trophies

Football Facts: Brazil have won five World Cup titles

Brazil hold the record for the most World Cup successes as they have lifted the biggest prize in international football five times. Brazil won in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, and 2002. One of the greatest players ever to play the sport, Pele, lifted the World Cup three times with Brazil.

However, they are still second on this list. The last World Cup triumph came over two decades ago in 2002. Since then, football fans have hardly seen Brazil do well in a major tournament.

They are still always among the favourites for international trophies, but they were a much more successful unit before the 21st century. Along with the World Cup, Brazil have also tasted success nine times in the Copa America, two times in the Olympics, and lifted the Confederations Cup four times.

World Cup 5 (1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, 2002)
Copa America 9 (1919, 1922, 1949, 1989, 1997, 1999, 2004, 2007, 2019
Olympic Games 2 (2016, 2020)
Confederations Cup 4 (1997, 2005, 2009, 2013)

1. Argentina - 24 major trophies

2022 World Cup

Argentina are at the top of this list with a record 24 International accolades. Lionel Messi finally got his hands on the World Cup in 2022, matching the legacy of another great Argentinian Diego Maradona.

Argentina won their first World Cup title in 1978. They had to wait 8 years for their second one but after waiting for a long thirty-six years, they lent their hands on their third World Cup title.

Argentina won their first Copa America title in 1921 and since then they have won a record 16 Copa America titles. They are the only nation in South America to win the Copa America title three consecutive times.

La Albiceleste were finding it very difficult to win the title after 1993 but Lionel Messi led his side to victory in 2021 after beating Brazil by 1-0. They played in the final of the 2024 Copa America and lifted the title once again under the leadership of Messi and a lot of credit should go to Lionel Scaloni, the manager who has revived the whole Nation and made them the best football-playing nation of the entire planet earth.

Along with 3 World Cup trophies and 15 Copa America titles, Argentina are also two two-time Olympic Gold medalists, and 1-time Confederations Cup champion, and have also been crowned as the UEFA Cup of Champions two times.

World Cup 3 (1978, 1986, 2022)
Copa America 16 (1921, 1925, 1927, 1929, 1937, 1941, 1945, 1946, 1947, 1955, 1957, 1959, 1991, 1993, 2021, 2024)
