Newcastle United has appointed Eddie Howe as head coach until 2024 following the exit of Steve Bruce last month.

Eddie Howe has been away from management since he left Bournemouth in August 2020. Followed by relegation from the Premier League on the final day of the season.

His first job will be to secure a safe place for Newcastle United as the Magpies have failed to register a single win after 11 matches. However, having a wealthy owner they still can't sign a player till January. So now he has to recover the team's position in the squad he has.

Howe at Newcastle United

Howe in a statement- "It is a great honor to become head coach of a club with the stature and history of Newcastle United. It is a very proud day for me and my family"

"This is a wonderful opportunity, but there is also a lot of work ahead of us and I am eager to get onto the training ground to start working with the players."

Following the dismissal of Steve Bruce, Newcastle United appointed Graeme Jones as their interim manager for 3 matches. Following a takeover of the club by Saudi-led owners.

Eddie Howe's first game will be against Brentford on November 20th at St James' Park. Newcastle has managed to just get 5 points out of their 11 matches without registering a single win. Howe is very familiar with the relegation battle. Having been in charge of Bournemouth for over 450 games across two spells for more than a decade at the Vitality Stadium.

He joined in the 2008-09 season, to help a crippling Bournemouth. He then helped the team achieve promotion over the years and finally secured a spot in the top tier after winning the championship. The club spent five seasons in the Premier League and even a finish as high as ninth in the 2016-17 campaign.

Newcastle co-owner Amanda Staveley in a statement

"We have been incredibly impressed by Eddie through what has been a rigorous recruitment process"

"As well as his obvious achievements with Bournemouth. Where he had a transformational impact, he is a passionate and dynamic coach who has clear ideas about taking this team and club forward.

"He is a great fit for what we are trying to build here. We are happy to welcome Eddie and his staff to St James' Park. And very much look forward to working together towards our collective ambitions."

Eddie Howe becomes the first English manager to win a major trophy since 2008-sportzpoint.com

Eddie Howe has become the first English manager to lift a major trophy in men's football since the year 2008.

The 47-year-old manager has paved Newcastle United’s way to a major domestic trophy, as the Magpies salvaged a deserved 2-1 victory against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup Final last night.

The Newcastle United manager has touched the silverware to be only the first English manager to lift a major trophy in Men’s football since Harry Redknapp led Portsmouth to win the FA Cup in 2008.

After 17 years, the drought has finally been broken by Eddie, who expressed that he will “certainly won’t” forget this, stating the fact that Newcastle has won a major domestic trophy in 70 years.

With such a long wait for a trophy, this will be a day that I’m sure everyone will never forget,

In this article, we discuss the last English managers to lift each of the major honours available in men’s football, before Eddie Howe lifted the Carabao Cup last night.

Harry Redknapp – FA Cup

Harry Redknapp was the last English manager to win one of the major domestic men's football titles when he led Portsmouth to FA Cup victory in 2008.

The team's triumph was secured by Nigeria striker Nwankwo Kanu, who scored the only goal in a 1-0 win against Cardiff City in the Final.

Steve McClaren – League Cup

Steve McClaren led Middlesbrough to the first major trophy in the club’s history when they defeated Bolton Wanderers to win the 2004 EFL Cup, which was known as the Carling Cup at the time.

Joseph-Desire Job scored an early goal, and Bolo Zenden converted a penalty, putting Middlesbrough ahead 2-0 within the first seven minutes at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium.

Although Kevin Davies managed to pull one back for the Sam Allardyce-coached Bolton side, the Teessiders held on to secure the victory.

Howard Wilkinson – First Division

No English manager has won the Premier League title; however, Scottish manager Sir Alex Ferguson achieved this remarkable feat 13 times. The last English manager to lead a championship-winning team was Howard Wilkinson, who did so in the final season of the old First Division.

Wilkinson’s Leeds United secured the title by defeating Sheffield United 3-2 on the penultimate weekend of the 1991-92 season. Meanwhile, Manchester United, managed by Ferguson at that time, lost 2-0 to Liverpool. Ultimately, Leeds topped the table, finishing four points ahead of Manchester United.

Sir Bobby Robson – Cup Winners’ Cup

Although domestic success has been limited for English managers, achieving glory in European competitions has been even more challenging.

The last major European triumph for an Englishman came under the guidance of the legendary Sir Bobby Robson, who led FC Barcelona to victory in the UEFA European Cup Winners' Cup in 1997. Ronaldo secured the win with a penalty, resulting in a 1-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the final.

Joe Fagan – European Cup

Although no manager has yet won the Champions League, Joe Fagan is the most recent winner of the tournament's predecessor, the European Cup in 1984.

Fagan succeeded Bob Paisley as the manager of Liverpool during the summer of 1983. He watched from the sidelines as Alan Kennedy scored the decisive penalty in a shootout victory against AS Roma in the Italian capital, marking Liverpool's fourth triumph in the European Cup in seven years.

Keith Burkinshaw – UEFA Cup

Manager Keith Burkinshaw secured the UEFA Cup, the predecessor of the Europa League, with Tottenham in the 1984 season.

Tottenham had drawn 1-1 against Anderlecht in the first leg in Brussels. In the return leg, captain Graham Roberts scored a late equalizer to end the match 2-2 after extra time.

The Spurs went on to win the trophy by securing a 4-3 victory in the shootout, as Goalkeeper Tony Parks saved a penalty from Anderlecht's Arnor Gudjohnsen.

Why does Bruno Guimarães wear Jersey no. 39? Here is the emotional story behind it

Why does Bruno Guimarães wear Jersey no. 39? Here is the emotional story behind it-sportzpoint.com

Bruno Guimarães is one of the most talented and prolific midfielders in the world football right now. The 27-year-old Brazilian currently plays for the Premier League side Newcastle United, where he established himself as one of the best midfielders in recent years with his sublime ball-playing ability and playmaking skills.

One of the most interesting things about Guimarães is that he wears an unusual number for a first-team central midfielder like him. Instead of the traditional four, six, or eight numbers for midfielders, the Brazilian wears the number 39 shirt.

Even more interestingly, the Brazilian has worn the 39-numbered Jersey in every club he has played in his senior club career so far, showing his intense attachment to this certain number. This surely raises a question among the fans, why does he always prefer this number?

Well, the reason behind it is very emotional and heartwarming. Guimarães pays homage to his father, who endured struggles as a taxi driver to help the player grow his football career.

The emotional story behind Guimarães' Jersey no. 39

(Image Source | The Players' Tribune)

Burno's father Dick Guimarães used to be a taxi driver in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, as the number 39 was his vehicle's despatch number.

In the famous 'The Players' Tribune', Guimarães wrote an emotional article in February 2023, revealing the heart-warming reason behind his using the number so often and putting it up in his football shirts during his senior club career.

The number tells a story more beautiful than words can say. 39. I know people think it’s a weird number for a footballer. But for me 39 is special — no, it’s more than that. It's magical. The number 39 gave me everything in life. It got me here to Newcastle. It fed me, clothed me, and paid for three-hour bus rides to pursue my dream. #039 was the dispatch number of my father’s taxi in Rio de Janeiro.

He dived deeper into the emotional backstory, as later on he wrote:

My mother worked in a motorcycle shop. My father, of course, was a taxi driver. In Brazil, especially in Rio, this is a tough life. You work basically all day and night. But that yellow taxi kept my dream alive. Pretty much the only day I saw my father was on Saturday, when he came to watch me play football. It made me nervous, to be honest. My father was my hero. I didn’t want to disappoint him. And he was quite hard on me, at first. Sometimes he’d even say, 'I’m tired of seeing you lose. You can have an extra hamburger today, but only if you win.

"My journey was not a superstar’s story."

Bruno Guimarães pulled the emotional strings of his childhood complexities and sufferings but never overlooked the sacrifices his parents made.

I won’t lie. There were a few times that I had my bags packed. Once, I called my mom and told her to send me money for a bus ticket home. And I can hear her voice saying, “Stay calm. In a little while, we’ll be there together. This is your dream. This is what you want.”

They used to drive up to see me in the taxi on weekends. Even on his day off, my dad couldn’t escape the yellow taxi, number 039. For three years, I struggled at the academy. By the time I was 17, I still didn’t have a professional contract. It’s crazy to think about kids like Vinicius Jr. and Endrick — 16, 17 years old and — they were already stars. Me, I was making backup plans to become a taxi driver like my father. I was only earning about R$400 a month, and I think my cellphone bill was R$100. If I didn’t get a pro contract at 18, I had to be realistic. I didn’t want my parents to be disappointed, so I lied and said that I was taking my license test because I dreamed of having a VW Beetle when I signed my contract. But really, I was working on my back-up for “real life.”

I was months away from becoming 039 myself, if I didn’t get my break.

(Image Source | The Players' Tribune)

Bruno also recalled an emotional phone call with his father when he was loaned to Brazilian side Athletico Paranaense in Brazil.

...When I was loaned to Athletico Paranaense, I was talking to my father on the phone on the day I arrived, and I said, “Hey, what number do you think I should take? I’m thinking of using 97, because I was born in 1997.”

And he said, “What about 39? That is more than a number. 039 gave us everything we have, Bruno. Our house, our food, our furniture, your football boots. It was all because of our taxi.”...
