Eredivisie: Next big players to look out for in the Dutch League?

Some Eredivisie players could be ready to move into one of the bigger European leagues, lets take a look at the list.

Dec 28, 2022, 5:59 AM6 min read

Eredivisie over the year has been producing household names in European football.  Ajax have gradually wrested back their reputation as a European giant with some strong showings in the Champions League. The Dutch side have impressed since Erik Ten Hag arrived at the club and this has helped put the Eredivisie back on the footballing map as a market worth scouting for talent.

Although other teams in the Netherlands have perhaps underachieved in continental competition in recent seasons, there are plenty of players still making the jump from the Eredivisie to the top 5 European leagues. In the summer, 16 players made that jump, the most successful of which was Teun Koopmeiners's to Atalanta where he has become fundamental to their midfield. Denzel Dumfries is also beginning to make the right wing back position his own at Inter after a slow start in Serie A.

We take a look at the potential next four players who should be ready for the step up to a bigger European league from the Eredivise:

Noussair Mazraoui:

Eredivisie: Mazraoui | Sportz Point.
Noussair Mazraoui (Image- Morocco World News)

It's impossible to ignore Noussair Mazraoui as he is the top-rated right back in Eredivisie and Europe right now and he is available on a free transfer this summer

The Moroccan has scored five goals and made two assists from right back in 1617 Eredivisie minutes, and as you can see from his TransferLab profile above, he stands out, particularly in attacking metrics. For instance, his adjusted pass accuracy ranks in the 100th percentile, whilst he also shows up extremely highly for expected assists, touches in the final third, and for the quality of his crossing.

Mazraoui is agile, with a tall and slender frame and alongside his excellent ball manipulation, this makes him an accomplished dribbler. He regularly beats players in deep areas and is confident in carrying the ball up the line or in-field. In the final third, he will beat opposing fullbacks when arriving on the overlap or from a standing start and regularly gets into the box to shoot or create chances.

The Morrocan full-back has recently been linked with a move to Barcelona and it's easy to imagine him fitting into Xavi's system with relative ease.

But turn of events, Mazraoui is now about to join Bayern Munich for 20 million in the summer.

Cody Gakpo:

Eredivisie: Gakpo | Sportz Point
Cody Gakpo (Image- tranfermarkt)

Dusan Tadic might have broken Lionel Messi's assists record in a single year but the Serbian is 33-years-old now and a player unlikely to be moving on from Ajax. On the other side, Anthony will be highly likely to attract offers from the top European sides but again we won't look at him as he is an Ajax player.

Meanwhile, Cody Gakpo is ranked second in the position on the left, has been impressing in the division for a few seasons, and at 22, is the perfect age to tempt clubs in top leagues to make a move.

Gakpo is a creator and a goalscorer, shown by his extremely high rankings for expected goals and expected assists in the Eredivisie. He has a habit of arriving unmarked at the back post to score tap-ins, accounting for his very high xG but as well as that, his powerful running style and quick feet make him a nightmare for defenders to deal with when he drives inside from the wing.

Gakpo has scored eight goals and made twelve assists this season at a rate of 0.52 goals and 0.78 assists per 90 in the Eredivisie this term. These are extremely impressive figures maintained over 1385 minutes and seem to make him a certainty to be snapped up this summer. He would be well-suited to the Bundesliga as his physical profile and ability to create and score from carrying the ball would suit a league that is full of teams who attack through transitions.

That decision has been vindicated, with a number of top-level clubs – most notably Liverpool's old rivals Manchester United – chasing his signature. But Liverpool appear to have won the race, with PSV announcing that they have accepted a bid.

"The 23-year-old attacker will leave for England imminently, where he will be subjected to the necessary formalities ahead of the completion of the transfer," announced the Dutch giants.

Gakpo has been in sensational form this season, with 13 goals and 14 assists for his club in all competitions.

Liverpool are relatively well-stocked when it comes to their forward options, but they could certainly do with another option. Roberto Firmino is out of contract in the summer and may depart Anfield after eight years of service. Diogo Jota has struggled with injuries and has barely played, while Luis Diaz is sidelined until March.

Orkun Kokcu:

Sportz Point.

Next on our list is 21-year-old Turkish midfielder Orkun Kökcü. The Feyenoord man has largely operated as a deep-lying playmaker this season in the Eredivisie.

the Turkish footballer impresses most in his on-the-ball actions, particularly his progressive short passing and through balls his strongest attributes. Kökcü looks to move the ball through midfield to players in advanced positions to score and create from. His own output in terms of goal contributions is very impressive though as he has six goals and eight assists in 2019 minutes, equating to 0.27 goals and 0.36 assists per 90, respectively. Given such an impressive output, don't be surprised to see Kökcü linked to several clubs this summer.

Vangelis Pavlidis:

Eredivisie: Pavlidis | Sportz Point.
Vangelis Pavlidis (Image- AGONA Sports)

Finally, a player who is perhaps less likely to get an immediate move but one who is worth keeping an eye on after a couple of impressive seasons is Vangelis Pavlidis.

The Greek striker has less impressive headline figures than somebody like Sebastian Haller, unsurprisingly, but his underlying numbers are very strong in a much weaker team than Ajax. He's scored ten goals for an AZ side that are a long way down on the last few seasons where they pushed Ajax in title races and he impressed in a relegation battle with Willem II last season.

The 23-year-old impresses compared to other strikers in the division for almost every metric with his touches in the box particularly high. In his case, this is the area of the pitch where he does his best work. Although he can run in behind defensive lines and receive the ball back to goal, those are weaker areas in his game. Pavlidis is primarily a fox-in-the-box type striker.

Considering he only moved to AZ last summer, it may be that nobody wants to pay for Pavlidis. Perhaps a team in Ligue 1 or a Serie A team who are in need of a goalscorer might want to take a punt on him, given his knack for popping up in the right place in the penalty area.

Football News: Roman Abramovich secretly bankrolled Dutch football club, leaked documents suggest

Football news, Abramovich funded the takeover of a Vitesse and bankrolled it for years while owning Chelsea, leaked documents appear to show.

Mar 29, 2023, 7:36 PM4 min read

In football news, Roman Abramovich secretly funded the takeover of a Dutch top division football club and bankrolled it for years during the period that he also owned Chelsea, leaked documents appear to show.

Two investigations by the Netherlands football association were unable to uncover any financial ties between Abramovich and the club, Vitesse Arnhem, and concluded that the Russian oligarch had no managerial influence on Vitesse. Both Vitesse under its then owners, and Chelsea under Abramovich, repeatedly denied the oligarch was involved in funding the Dutch club.

The financial information has come to light in the Oligarch files, a cache of leaked data originating from the Cyprus-based offshore service provider MeritServus. The documents, reviewed by the Guardian and the Bureau of Investigative Journalism, appear to reveal for the first time at least €117m (£102.8m) in secret funding from Abramovich for the Vitesse takeover, which flowed through a series of entities registered in opaque offshore tax havens.

Links to Chelsea were suspected at the time of the 2010 takeover, which was led by the Georgian former footballer Merab Jordania. While he described Abramovich as his friend at the inaugural press conference, Jordania denied the oligarch was involved.

Football news also reveals the Royal Netherlands Football Association (KNVB) launched a first investigation into the financing of the takeover but found nothing to conflict with its rules.

Suspicions of links continued after Jordania's takeover, as Chelsea used Vitesse – which plays in the Dutch Eredivisie – as a partner club, to which players not yet ready for the demands of the English Premier League could be loaned and gain competitive experience. Many Chelsea players went to Vitesse on loan throughout the 2010s, notably including the Serbia international Nemanja Matić and the current Chelsea and England star Mason Mount, who played for Vitesse in the 2017-18 season.

Further questions were asked after Jordania left in 2013 and another associate of Abramovich, the Russian businessman Alexander Chigirinsky, took over. Vitesse and Jordania revealed at that point that Chigirinsky had already been financially involved in the club, since the 2010 takeover.

In April 2014, Jordania appeared to allege that Chelsea was involved, fuming that Vitesse had been prevented from strengthening its team in a bid to win the Eredivisie and qualify for the Uefa Champions League because "London didn't want that". He later withdrew the comments, and still maintains there was no truth to the allegation.

In other football news, the revelations prompted the second KNVB investigation, which concluded "there are no indications that Chelsea has a say in Vitesse's policy".

In 2017, the Guardian reported that associates of Abramovich based at Chelsea's Stamford Bridge offices had been involved in the Vitesse takeover. At the time, Chelsea declined to comment, saying only: "We enjoy a close working relationship with Vitesse Arnhem, as we do with other clubs."

The rules of Uefa, the European football confederation, require clubs that play against each other to be independently owned and run "to ensure the integrity of the competitions", and that "no individual or legal entity may have control or influence over more than one club participating in a Uefa club competition".

The leaked trove of documents appears to show that Abramovich bankrolled Vitesse's spending with a series of loans worth at least €117m (£102.8m) by the end of 2015. This was a huge investment for Vitesse, whose total turnover in 2014-15 was €14m (£12.3m).

Abramovich bought Chelsea in 2003 after becoming a Russian oil and gas billionaire, pouring £2bn into the club to fund signings of world-class stars. They delivered unprecedented success, including twice winning the Champions League. Abramovich was forced to sell Chelsea last year after being subject to sanctions following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The Biggest Upset League Title Wins In Football:

The Biggest Upset League Title Wins In Football is a rare occasion and a very special one. As a football fan, have you ever felt the need to know which small teams have caused the biggest upsets in football history, especially in the League.

Winning a league title in football is an incredible achievement. Overall, a team has to be better than every other team in the League (in all major departments) to win the title.

In an ideal situation, the big teams in the league are expected to challenge for or win the title.

However, there have been some exceptional cases of unexpected teams coming from nowhere to win the League.

Indeed, the biggest upsets in football League history are incredible. Why? It is not just a one-match wonder.

Being better than every other team in the league over the course of the season is an unreal achievement especially where there is little or no budget.

We'll highlight some of the biggest upsets league title wins in football history across the world in no particular order.

Sporting CP | 2020/21 Season

Sporting had not won the Portuguese Primeira Liga for 19 years. But somehow, they miraculously won the league in the 2020/21 season.

Ideally, you'll expect Porto or Benfica to win the Primeira Liga.

Take a look at the last 10 winners of the Premeira: it's either Porto or Benfica.

SN Season League Winners Points
1 2019–20 Porto 82
2 2018–19 Benfica 87
3 2017–18 Porto 88
4 2016–17 Benfica 82
5 2015–16 Benfica 88
6 2014–15 Benfica 85
7 2013–14 Benfica 74
8 2012–13 Porto 78
9 2011–12 Porto 75
10 2010–11 Porto 84

Feyenoord | 2016/17 Season

In the Eredivisie, Feyenoord caused an upset in the 2016/17 season. They won the league by just 1 point on the last day of the season.

Usually, PSV or Ajax are expected to win the title but it proved to be different in that season.

In that campaign, they won 26 of their 34 matches, drew 4, and lost just 4 matches. They earned 82 points in total.

Only Ajax came closest to them with 81 points.

Leicester City | 2015/16 Season

In the history of the Premier League, no team has ever won the league in the manner Leicester City did. From the relegation spot, Leicester City became 5000/1 winners of the Premier League.

No one expected them to win. As of 2016, Premier League followers would expect Manchester City or Chelsea to win the League.

Leicester's Premier League win is even more surprising because they were just promoted to the Premier League in the 2013/14 season.

Leicester's fairly tail league title win will go down as one of the biggest upsets in the history of English football.

Blackburn Rovers | 1994/95 Season

Blackburn Rovers stunned Premier League fans in 1995 as they beat Manchester United to the league title by just 1 point.

This is one of the biggest upsets in the Premier League football history.

Ever since then, they've never really been close to winning the League.

Blackburn currently plays in the English Championship.

FC Kaiserslautern | 1997/98 Season

Just like Nottingham Forrest, Kaiserslautern won the League title after just being promoted from the second division.

Kaiserslautern won the Bundesliga by just 2 points – beating usual winners – Bayern Munich.

Deportivo La Coruna | 1999/2000 Season

Deportivo La Coruna won La Liga in 2000, although they spent €41.61m in transfers and had a world-class team. See below Deportivo's league-winning squad in the year 2000.

Deportivo la Coruna's title win in the 1999-2000 season was an upset win. From 2000 to 2005.

Unfortunately, Deportivo is currently in the Spanish 3rd tier league.

Valencia | 2003/04 Season

Incredibly, Rafael Benítez-led Valencia won the League by 5 points, beating star-studded Barcelona to the title.

The most interesting thing about Valencia's title win is that they were 5 points behind with just 10 matches to go.

Lille | 2020/21 Season

How Lile managed to win the French Ligue 1 at the expense of PSG is beyond explanation.

They sold their talisman (in Victor Osimhen to Napoli) just before the season started. Somehow they still managed to win the league.

Lille's title win is one of the biggest upsets in football history.

Montpellier | 2011/12 Season

In the French Ligue 1 again, Montpellier caused another upset in the 2011/12 season.

Montpellier won their first-ever Ligue 1 title by 3 points, ahead of PSG.

In that season, Oliver Giroud was the league's highest goalscorer with 21 goals.

Interestingly, Montepeliier didn't even have up to a fifth of PSG's budget, yet they clinched the title ahead of them. It was indeed a shocker.

Atletico Madrid | 2013/14 Season

Biggest Upset League Title Wins: ATM | Sportz Point

Atletico were a side that had 1/6 of the squad value of Barca and Madrid who were in their golden eras. In addition, Messi and Ronaldo were somewhat in their prime.

They won it on the final matchday of the season, in the Camp Nou of all places.

Barca would've won the title had they won that game but a Godin header won Atleti their first la Liga title in 19 years. It was just unbelievable.

This completes our list of the Biggest Upset League Title Wins In Football.
