Match preview
After an action packed first day of the FIFA Women's World Cup 2023, with co-hosts, Australia and New Zealand winning their matches with just one goal, we now move on to the second match of the second day. That match is gonna be played between debutants Phillipines and Switzerland, who's only making their second ever World Cup appearance.
The journey of the Philippines has been nothing short of a miracle. No one expected them to reach the semi-final rounds in the Asia Cup but they did. It was their best ever performance at the Asia Cups and it brought them World Cup qualification for the first time in their history.
Despite being the lowest ranked team in Group A, Philippines should still fancy their chances against Switzerland. The European team's recent form have not been that great so if I were Philippines, I would fance my chances of beating Switzerland and create history.
"The challenge for us is to somehow maintain and sustain that improvement, not be happy with where we got to.", Stajcic said.
At the moment things are not going in Switzerland's favour. After being able to win the FIFA Women's World Cup UEFA qualifiers against Wales in October 2022, they haven't won a single game. So it's gonna be hard for them to get back to winning ways.
They had numerous injuries leading up to this tournament but thankfully for the Swiss, many of those players have returned in time for the World Cups so we could expect to see the 2022 Switzerland.
This game, Philippines vs Switzerland is gonna be an equally contested match with both the team being fairly inexperienced in the World Cup stages but Switzerland might get the better of Philippines with the quality of players they've and their strong defense.
