Match Preview

South Korea opened their World Cup campaign in a disappointing fashion where Colombia defeated them in emphatic style. Their second Matchday was equally disappointing when they lost to Morocco.

Ibtissam Jraidi scored in that match in the opening minutes of the game to give the African team an opening lead which South Korea failed to recover from.

Having failed to pick up a point in their opening two games, South Korea require a miracle to reach the knockout rounds, as they need to beat Germany by a five-goal margin and hope Morocco lose to Colombia. While it is highly likely that South Korea will be eliminated on Thursday, they will still be determined to claim a positive result, having lost their last six games at the Women's World Cup since beating Spain 2-1 in the 2015 tournament.

On the other hand, Germany started their campaign with a 6-0 victory over the Morocco Women. The 2022 Euro finalists looked like they meant business from the word go and their performances backed it up. But on their second Matchday, Colombia surprised Germany by defeating them in possibly the last kick of the game.

Germany's trouble began with Linda Caicedo's wonder strike which gave Colombia the lead. Although Germany was able to equalise the score in the 88th minute of the game yet a late set piece proved to be Germany's undoing as Manuela Vanegas headed home from a corner kick in the seventh minute of stoppage time to condemn Germany to their first defeat in the Women's World Cup group stage since 1995 when they were beaten by Sweden.

"We need to prepare really well and concentrate fully on our next challenge – and that's just what we'll do, as always. Then we'll head back out onto the pitch and try to implement our gameplan, dominate play, create chances and win the match." Martina Voss-Tecklenburg, Germany coach

Due to their significant goal difference advantage over third-placed Morocco, Martina Voss-Tecklenburg's side will advance to the last-16 if they match the North African side's result in the group's other game against Colombia.

Team news

While Korea Republic coach Colin Bell has a fully fit squad to choose from, Shim Seoyeon and Lim Seonjoo are both on a yellow card heading into the last group match.

Germany still have some injury worries, particularly in defence. Sara Doorsoun became the latest casualty after the game against Colombia and will miss this Brisbane bout match. coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg is likely to have to switch her system to deploy two strikers up front, in which case Lea Schuller could return to the team to play alongside Alexandra Popp. Lena Oberdorf and Nicole Anyomi will miss any potential round-of-16 clash should either of them pick up another booking.
