Match Preview

It could easily be Portugal if they hit the back of the net instead of the post in the closing stages of their final Group E game. Defending champions United States would have been going home early from the FIFA Women's World Cup, in the group stages for the first time in their history. USA's total of five points was their lowest ever in a Women's World Cup group stage.

The USWNT ultimately ended the match on a 0-0 draw and satisfied themselves with a second place finish in the group behind the Netherlands. As a result of not topping their group, they will have a particularly tougher opponent in the last 16 in the name of Sweden.

USA have won their last eight games in the knockout stage of the Women's World Cup, last failing to do so in the 2011 final against Japan (losing on penalties). Excluding penalty shootouts, the last time they lost a game in the knockout stage was in the semi-finals in 2007 against Brazil (4-0).

Sweden, on the other hand are one of the very few teams in this tournament to won all three of their group stage games, including a 5-0 thrashing of Italy on Matchday 2. They've reached the knockout stage of the Women's World Cup for the eighth time in nine appearances. They have reached at least the semi-final in three of their last four knockout stage appearances, with the only exception being a 4-1 loss to Germany in the last 16 in 2015.

Head To Head

This will be the seventh meeting between Sweden and USA at the Women's World Cup making it the most-played fixture in the competition's history. The previous six meetings all occurred in the group stage, with USA winning four of those and Sweden just one (D1).

USA have lost just two of their last 12 games against Sweden in all competitions (W5 D5), though one of those was a 3-0 loss in their most recent meeting at the Olympics in Tokyo two years ago

Team News

Sweden coach Peter Gerhardsson made nine changes to his starting line-up for the final group game against Argentina and was rewarded with a 2-0 victory, which made it three wins from three matches.

Gerhardsson is likely to revert to a team similar to that which started the first two games against South Africa and Italy, with Caroline Seger, playing in her last World Cup, in danger of not being involved due to the calf injury which has plagued her in recent months.

A previous thigh issue has not prevented Amanda Ilestedt from playing a key role for Sweden so far, while Linda Sembrant appeared from the bench against Argentina. Fridolina Rolfo was substituted in the first two games as she makes her way back from a knee injury but she should start against the USA.
