The recent UCL clash between AC Milan and Atletico Madrid saw an unknown name score the winner for the Italian side in a crucial must-win match. Junior Messias came on as a substitute around the 65th minute, replacing Rade Krunic. The 30-year-old, who joined the Rossoneri from Crotone in the off-season, scored with his first attempt as a Milan player on his third appearance, and his first in Europe's elite competition.
Junior Messias became the news sensation as he reached an important milestone in his career journey from delivering fridges to scoring on his Champions League debut when the Brazilian came on as a substitute and grabbed the late winner.
"I dedicate it to my family and friends in Brazil. But especially to those who have believed in me and who had the faith to bring me to Milan. I have had a different path to others, so I dedicate this goal to them," Messias told Amazon Prime.
Junior Messias and his amazing journey
He started his career with Casale in the fifth tier of Italian football, then rising through the ranks of Serie D, C, and B. Finally made his Serie A debut last season with Crotone aged 29.
Messias came to Italy from Brazil in 2011 and initially juggled amateur football with a job delivering fridges, before rising the ranks.
His brilliant performances at Crotone got the attention of AC Milan and offered him a contract. However, his AC Milan career didn't have a great start as he was suffering from injuries. His match against Atletico Madrid was his only third appearance for AC Milan.
"This is the most important thing that has happened to me so far," -Messias said.
He further added- "But humility has to be a constant. You can't beat yourself up about criticism or get over-excited about compliments. You need to have the right balance."
He kept the team's UCL hopes alive
His Goal was a crucial one as not only did they win the match. But on the other hand, it kept their champions league hopes alive with 4 points under their name. A win on the final matchday against Liverpool will see the team qualify for the RO16.
And Milan coach Pioli said there is much more to come from the late-blooming star.
"It is a wonderful story, but I think he is only getting started. He has great qualities, and this goal will give him even more belief," Pioli said.
