Inter Milan vs Bayern Munich: Match Preview:

With just two spots up for grabs to qualify for the last 16, games between the big three could prove to be six-pointers in the grand scheme of things. This makes Inter Milan vs Bayern Munich an interesting opening fixture with both sides keen to start strong.

— Inter (@Inter) September 6, 2022

Inter have been one of the best clubs in Italy in recent years but have been unable to make a mark in Europe. They got past the group stages last season but fell to Liverpool in the last 16. Bayern, meanwhile, made it to the quarter-finals before being stunned by an inspired Villarreal side. Both teams will aim to do better this time around.

Die Roten have a hundred per cent record against Inter while playing away and have won all three games at the Giuseppe Meazza. That record will be up to the test on Wednesday evening. Julian Nagelsmann has seen his side held to consecutive draws in the Bundesliga and will hope that Samir Handanovic does not channel his inner Lev Yashin on the night.

— FC Bayern München (@FCBayern) September 6, 2022

Inter, meanwhile, have shown chinks in their armour and will be starting from their Derby Della Madonnina loss at the weekend. Simone Inzaghi's side have already lost two games in Serie A this season and look far from their best when put under pressure. Bayern are unlikely to let them off the hook and have the firepower to cause some serious damage.

It promises to be an interesting contest between two sides who are coming off frustrated after dropping points at the weekend. There is no better cure for that than to have a night to remember in the Champions League. At the Giuseppe Meazaa, we could be in for a thrilling contest.

Date, Location and Kick Off:

Inter Milan vs Bayern Munich will be played on 7th September, 12:30 am IST. The Match will be played at the San Siro Stadium in Milan, Italy.

Inter Milan vs Bayern Munich: Head to Head:

Bayern Munich and Inter Milan are on an even footing as far as the official head-to-head record is concerned and have won three games apiece out of a total of seven matches that have been played between the two sides.

The previous meeting between the two teams took place in 2017 and ended in a 2-0 victory in favor of Inter Milan. Bayern Munich were poor on the day and will need to step up in this fixture.

Team News:

Inter Milan:

The Nerazzurri will be without Romelu Lukaku, who is still nursing a thigh injury. Edin Dzeko impressed off the bench at the weekend and could get the nod ahead of Joaquin Correa to partner Lautaro Martinez upfront.

— Inter (@Inter) September 6, 2022

Alessandro Bastoni could also be dropped to the bench after a horror show against AC Milan. Federico Dimarco could take his spot in the back three with the defensively solid Mateo Darmian occupying the left wing-back role. Inzaghi has an otherwise fit squad to choose from and is unlikely to deviate from his 3-5-2- formation. Given Bayern's attacking prowess, playing three at the back could prove to be a hill that Inzaghi is willing to die on.

Samir Handanovic will start in goal, but the ageing shot-stopper will struggle to provide the agility that Yan Sommer and Frederik Ronnow showed to deny Bayern in recent times. The Inter veteran has often been accused of being too inert and will need to be at the top of his game on the night.

— Inter (@Inter) September 6, 2022

He will be protected by a back three of Milan Skriniar, Stefan De Vrij and Federico Dimarco. The excellent Denzel Dumfries will occupy the right wing-back spot while Matteo Darmian will hold the other flank. Marcelo Brozovic is a sure starter in the midfield and will be entrusted with keeping Joshua Kimmich quiet. The Croatian has a big job on his hands and cannot afford to be given the runaround in the game.

Nicolo Barella and Hakan Calhanoglu will start alongside Brozovic and will be tasked with carving out attacking opportunities and also making runs upfield in the central areas. Lautaro Martinez is Inter's biggest threat going forward and will play just behind Edin Dzeko in the attack. The Argentine could be forced to drop back and add to bodies in midfield should Bayern seize the initiative.

Bayern Munich:

Die Roten might have dropped points in their last two Bundesliga clashes, but it had more to do with the opposition goalkeepers having a worldie than them lacking anything. Nagelsmann's side have been free-flowing in attack, and the summer signings have settled in well. They will once again look to start the game on the front foot and put Inter under pressure.

— FC Bayern München (@FCBayern) September 6, 2022

Bayern last won the competition in 2019-20 and will be considered among the favourites this season. They are comfortably the better team on paper and will arrive at the Giuseppe Meazza as favourites. As long as they have their shooting boots on, all three points will likely be in the bag.

Nagelsmann is likely to put his side out in a 4-2-3-1 formation that plays to their strengths. Manuel Neuer is a sure starter in goal and will play behind a back four of Benjamin Pavard, Lucas Hernandez, Matthijs de Ligt, and Alphonso Davies.

Joshua Kimmich and Marcel Sabitzer have formed an excellent partnership in recent seasons and will once again reprise their role as the double pivot. This will act as a springboard for the trio of Jamal Musiala, Thomas Muller and Kingsley Coman to rush forward and wreak havoc.

— FC Bayern München (@FCBayern) September 6, 2022

Sadio Mane will lead the line in what will be his debut in the competition for Bayern. The Senegalese international was part of the Liverpool side that got the better of Inter last season and will hope for more of the same on Wednesday.

Key Stats:

  • Inter Milan and Bayern Munich have faced off against each other seven times, with each side winning three apiece. The only group stage by either side came in 2006 when Bayern won 2-0 away at Inter.
  • All three of Bayern Munich's wins in the fixture have come away from home. They have a 100% record against Inter while on the road.
  • Inter Milan have enjoyed some high-scoring games against German opposition in recent times, with the last 10 clashes contributing to 39 goals.
  • Inter Milan are the last side from Italy to beat Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League. The Germans suffered the loss in 2011 and have since gone 10 games unbeaten against Serie A opposition.
  • Inter Milan are the last Italian side to keep a clean sheet against Bayern. They achieved it in the 2009 UEFA Champions League final that they won 2-0.
  • Inter Milan have failed to open their UEFA Champions League campaign with a win in their last three attempts. They have kicked off with a victory only once in their last six campaigns.

Predicted Line-ups:

Inter Milan Predicted Lineup (3-5-2):  Neuer; Pavard, Hernandez, De Ligt, Davies; Kimmich, Sabitzer; Coman, Muller, Musiala; Mane.

Bayern Munich Predicted Lineup (3-5-2): Handanovic; Skriniar, de Vrij, Dimarco; Dumfries, Barella, Brozovic, Calhanoglu, Darmian; Martinez, Dzeko

Liverpool are currently atop the Premier League 2024-25 table, having bagged 73 points in 30 matches. The Reds are edging closer to the title as Arsenal, the second-placed side, dropped points against Everton in a 1-1 stalemate yesterday.

Liverpool have a chance to extend their lead at the top with a win against Fulham this evening, which will see them going 14 points ahead of the Gunners.

The Mikel Arteta-led side has earned 62 points in 31 games so far. As of now, Liverpool only need 11 points from their last eight games to secure the Premier League title for the 20th time in their history.

Nottingham Forest have been a surprise entrant for a top-four finish in the Premier League, charging for a UEFA Champions League berth next season. The Forest are now third with 57 points in 31 games – five points clear of the fourth-placed Chelsea.

Fifth-placed Manchester City (51 points in 30 games) and Aston Villa (51 points in 31 games), now sixth, will throw a tough challenge for the Champions League and Europa League berth, whereas seventh-placed Newcastle United (50 points in 29 games) might surpass City and Villa in the race.

The title race in LaLiga 2024-25 has intensified dramatically after the league leaders FC Barcelona and nearest challengers Real Madrid dropped points in the same day yesterday. Los Blancos faced a shocking 1-2 defeat against Valencia at home, whereas Barcelona were held to a 1-1 draw against Real Betis at home.

Barcelona are currently atop the table with 67 points in 30 matches, four points clear of Real Madrid with 63 points in the same number of games. The title race might go down to the last matchday as these two teams will meet in the fierce El Clasico, scheduled for May 11th, which could decide the potential champions.

Fourth-placed Athletic Bilbao (53 points in 29 games) are already five points ahead of Real Betis, now fifth (48 points in 30 games) with one game in hand. Sixth-placed Villareal (47 points in 28 games) could pose a challenge for both of them for UCL and UEL qualification, with two games in hand to match Betis' tally.

Serie A

Serie A 2024-25 might witness one of the greatest showdowns in the title charge in the league's history, as league leaders Inter Milan dropped points in a 2-2 draw against Parma last night.

Defending champions Inter Milan are currently topping the table with 68 points across 31 games, having played one game more than second-placed Napoli, who have accumulated 64 points in 30 games. If Napoli ends this week with a win, the gap between these two teams will be just one, leading the teams to walk the wire in the final matchdays.

The pressure to finish in the top four have also intensified in Italy. With Inter and Napoli confirmed to finish in the top four, third-placed Atalanta (58 points in 30 games), fourth-placed Bologna (56 points in 30 games), fifth-placed Juventus (55 points in 30 games), and sixth-placed AS Roma (52 points in 30 games) will battle it out for the last two UCL berths.

As of now, only six points separate league leaders Bayern Munich and second-placed Bayer Leverkusen, though Bayern might attain the Bundesliga 2024-25 title and a first trophy for Harry Kane if they manage to accumulate 13 from the 18 points available.

Bayern Munich are now ahead with 68 points in 28 games, whereas reigning Champions Bayer Leverkusen have managed 62 in the same number of matches, practically confirming their participation in next season's Champions League.

Paris Saint-Germain have claimed the 2024-25 Ligue 1 title after beating Angers 1-0 last night, ensuring their fourth successive title with 74 points in 28 games. The Luis Enrique-managed side have been crowned champions with six matches remaining and are now 24 points ahead of the second-placed AS Monaco (50 points in 28 matches).

PSG have clinched another milestone, winning the league title without losing a single game so far, and with six matches remaining, they will look to embrace the 'invincible' tag by ending the season without a single defeat.

If Les Parisiens complete an unbeaten league season, they will join a special group of clubs from Europe's top five leagues that have achieved this feat. This group includes Bayer Leverkusen in 2024, Juventus in 2012, Arsenal in 2004, AC Milan in 1992, Perugia in 1979, and Preston North End in 1889.

However, the race to qualify for next season's UCL will go down to the wire between six teams who are differentiated by only four points – AS Monaco (50), Olympique de Marseille (49), Olympique Lyonnais (48), OGC Nice (47), Lille OSC (47), and RC Strasbourg (46).

Thomas Muller set to leave Bayern Munich after spending 25 years with the club

Thomas Muller set to leave Bayern Munich after spending 25 years with the club | sportzpoint.com

Former German footballer Thomas Muller has announced that he will leave Bayern Munich at the end of the 2024-25 season.

The 35-year-old striker has played 17 seasons for the club. Bayern Munich is the only club he has played for in his career. Muller has played 743 games for Bayern Munich, scoring 243 goals.

Muller had already retired from international football during the Euro 2024, after featuring 131 times for the national side, where he scored 45 times.

After playing 88 matches for both the under-19 team and Bayern II, Muller made his senior Bayern Munich debut in the 2008-09 season. In the next season, Muller scored 19 goals and had 16 assists in 52 senior appearances. This helped him become a mainstay at the club.

In his 17 years with the club, Thomas Muller won 32 trophies for the German giants. His trophy cabinet includes 12 Bundesliga titles, 11 of which came in consecutive seasons from 2012 through to 2023.

Muller also went on to win two UEFA Champions League titles, one in 2013 and another one in 2020.

In 2023, Muller signed a contract extension with Bayern Munich till June 2025. With Bayern not deciding to renew his contract, both parties mutually agreed to terminate the contract.

"The club has consciously decided not to negotiate a new contract with me for next season,” Muller said.

“Even if this did not correspond to my personal wishes, it is important that the club follows its convictions. Even after all these years, regardless of the minutes I play, I still have a lot of fun being on the pitch with the boys. I could have easily imagined playing this role next year as well.

“I respect this step, which the board and supervisory board certainly did not take lightly. I understandably did not like the back-and-forth in public over the past weeks and months. However, I treat it like I do my own football: It wasn’t always characterised by perfection either, but rather with a positive, forward-thinking approach to the next move. After a bad pass, it is important to win the ball back and be unified. We have achieved this in recent days with honest discussions on this matter as well," Muller added.

Real Madrid stars could be banned before their intense clash against Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League

Real Madrid stars like Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior, and Antoine Rudiger could reportedly be banned for their UEFA Champions League clash against Arsenal. Read the full story in this article from Sportz Point.

UEFA has assigned an Ethics and disciplinary inspector to the actions of Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior, Antonio Rudiger, and Dani Ceballos after Real Madrid's dramatic win in the penalty shoot-out over Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 match on March 12.

One of the incidents being examined is a gesture of Antonio Rudiger's cut-throat celebrations towards the Atletico Madrid's fan base. Meanwhile, some video footage is circulating on social media, showing that Mbappe is making a gesture of groin-squeezing during the triumph celebrations. If the investigations lead to charges and a guilty sentence, the players could face disciplinary actions in the form of suspension, fines, or both.

UEFA's Statement:

A UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector has been appointed to investigate allegations of indecent conduct by Real Madrid CF players (Antonio Rüdiger, Kylian Mbappé, Daniel Ceballos Fernández, and Vinicius Junior) during the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 match between Club Atlético de Madrid and Real Madrid CF on 12 March 2025.

Real Madrid will eagerly await UEFA's final statement, as a ban for Vinicius, Rudiger, Ceballos, and Mbappe could significantly impact their preparations for the tie against Arteta. They will face the Gunners on April 8 in the Emirates Stadium, with the return fixture a week later in Santiago Bernabeu.

An example of similar behavior in the past led to financial fines and suspensions, setting an example that could influence UEFA’s decision on the current case.  Last summer, during Euro 2024, England midfielder Jude Bellingham was fined 30,000 euros and handed a one-match suspended ban for a groin-squeezing gesture after scoring a late equalizer in England’s 2-1 win over Slovakia in the tournament’s Round of 16.

Another example occurred in 2019 when Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone received a 20,000 euro fine for a similar act after his team scored against Juventus in the UEFA Champions League.
