ISL 2022-23 Final: ATK Mohun Bagan vs Bengaluru FC

First Half:

ATK Mohun Bagan kept the majority of the possession while Bengaluru relied on counter-attacking fast-paced football. Mohun Bagan just replicated their Semi-Final style of play by defending low on the pitch. Siva Sakthi got sandwiched between Carl McHugh and Ashique in the second minute of the game and he went down with a bleeding nose. Sunil Chhetri came as a sub as Siva Sakthi couldn't continue his game anymore.

ISL 2022-23 Final: Petratos gave the early lead to ATK Mohun Bagan

ATKMB's counterattack earned a corner in the 12th minute. Petratos took the corner kick and the ball after a header got saved by Bengaluru shot-stopper Gurpreet. However, the referee pointed to the spot for a Krishna handball in the penalty box. The ATK Mohun Bagan forward Petratos went to his left. Gurpreet jumped on the same side but failed to stop the bullet of a hit. ATK Mohun Bagan takes the early lead in the final in only the 14th minute of the game. Bengaluru FC decided to play with slow build-ups to push the Mariners into its own half and then speed up its attack. Simon Grayson's side suffered two early blows, Siva's injury and a goal after a poor mistake by Roy Krishna.

Bengaluru FC got a free-kick in the 25th minute in front of the box and Javi went for the free-kick. The Spaniard has scored from there before, in the ISL and he managed to keep the shot on target. Kaith, the winner of the Golden Glove, proved himself worthy of the prize as he made a brilliant save.

ISL 2022-23 Final: Sunil Chhetri's Equaliser for Bengaluru FC

Roy Krishna got to the ball and Subhasish followed him. The ATKMB player tried to get the ball off Krishna but missed the ball and caught the shin of the BFC player in the penalty box. However, the referee did not give a spot-kick after continues protests from the BFC players. In the 45+8 minutes of the game, Subhasish tried to clear the ball but failed big time, and the kick landed on Krishna's knee in the penalty box. The referee pointed to the spot for the Penalty. ISL's all-time top scorer Sunil Chhetri stepped up for the spot-kick. The Indian captain left Kaith on the other side as his kick ended up in the back of the net for the crucial equaliser which was the last kick of the first half.

Second Half:

Bengaluru FC had two center-backs rooted in front of its goal as it found new life after the Chhetri goal. ATK Mohun Bagan meanwhile tried to exploit the flanks with long balls for Ashique. Liston Colaco won the ball in the midfield and tried a shot from distance. His shot was on target but Gurpreet made an equally good save and Petratos failed to keep the shot on target in the follow-up. A Terrible miss from the goal scorer. Suresh Singh delivered the corner kick and the ball headed into the net by Roy Krishna. Simon Grayson punched in the air and BFC found the all-important lead in the 78th minute of the Final.

Six minutes after the goal, Pablo Perez fouled Kiyan Nassiri, and the referee pointed to the spot. Gurpreet jumped on the correct side again but got beaten by Petratos' force and speed. ATK Mohun Bagan and Bengaluru FC came back on level terms. Manvir made a gorgeous run along the right flank, beating his marker, and the cross was steered on target by Petratos. Prabir made a goal-line clearance to deny a certain stoppage-time winner. The regulation time ended in 2-2.

Extra Time:

Perez got fouled by Damjanvic as Bengaluru FC got a free-kick at the start of the extra time. Sunil Chhetri stepped up for the kick. He delivered a lofted ball for Udanta whose header just flew over the net. Bengaluru FC started an attack against the run of play after the Blues cleared Petratos' free-kick. Udanta made a lovely run into the final third. Colaco tried to stop him but failed and his cross reached Sunil on the other side. In the 119th minute, Petratos hit from a distance and caught Gurpreet off-guard. The Indian goalie tried to knuckle the ball out but he lost his footing and the ball somehow curved and missed the net. Chhetri, however, failed to get his head over the ball for a header. After 120 minutes of action, the match went into an eventual penalty shootout.

Bengaluru FC showed no mercy on Mumbai City FC in the first knockout match in the ISL 2024-25 play-offs, thrashing the defending cup winners 5-0 to secure a well-deserved semi-finals berth.

Suresh Singh Wangjam, Edgar Mendez, Ryan Williams, Sunil Chhetri, and Jorge Pereyra Diaz each scored a goal to run riot over the Islanders, stamping a clean-sheet as well.

Despite a tumultuous run in the league stage this season, Bengaluru finished third on the leaderboard, having bagged 38 points in 24 matches. The Blues secured third place due to better head-to-head stats against the fourth and fifth-placed teams.

However, head coach Gerard Zaragoza has a strong squad available for the semi-final clashes against FC Goa. Despite Vinith Venkatesh having suffered a knock against Mumbai, he might be available for the first leg. However, Bengaluru's second-choice keeper, Lalthuammawia Ralte, is still unavailable after suffering an injury in late February this year.

Bengaluru have not won a game against FC Goa in their last five meetings, and the Blues aim to change that as the first leg takes place at their home stadium.

FC Goa produced a consistent season, leading up to the second-place finish in the league stage with 48 points in 24 games, assuring a direct semi-finals qualification.

The Gaurs will look to ensure a lead, with the first leg being an away game. They will also leave no stone unturned to capitalize on the second-leg advantage at home, but they need to continue their league-stage unbeaten record against Bengaluru this season.

Having played their last game almost a month ago, head coach Manolo Marquez will have a fully fit squad available for the first leg.

The Gaurs will have to be very well-armoured for the Bengaluru challenge, as they have gained momentum, but the FC Goa side are adamant to clinch their long-coveted ISL Cup.

FIFA considering play-off game to replace Club Leon at the Club World Cup 2025

FIFA is reportedly considering arranging a one-game play-off between LAFC and Club America to replace Club Leon, who were controversially removed from the tournament.

FIFA considering play-off game to replace Club Leon at the Club World Cup 2025-sportzpoint.com

FIFA is reportedly considering the possibility of arranging a one-game play-off between Major League Soccer (MLS) club Los Angeles FC and Liga MX giants Club America to decide which team will represent the expelled Club Leon at the 2025 Club World Cup.

A FIFA spokesperson disclosed on Sunday that the organization is actively weighing the feasibility of this play-off match, whereas the winner of this playoff would also receive $9.55 million in prize money given by FIFA to teams qualified from the Concacaf zone.

However, FIFA's consideration does not include the Costa Rican side Deportiva Alajuelense after the club lodged a complaint in 2024, which led to Leon's subsequent removal from the tournament.

Costa Rican outfit Alajuelense’s complaint regarding the multi-ownership issue initiated the investigation by the FIFA Appeal Committee back in November 2024, which eventually led to Club Leon’s exclusion.

FIFA announced the decision to expel the Mexican side Club Leon from the expanded 32-team FIFA Club World Cup 2025 last week due to the club's shared ownership with Pachuca, another team that competes in Mexico's top division, Liga MX.

Pachuca also qualified for the Club World Cup after winning the 2024 Concacaf Champions Cup, while Club Leon earned its qualification after clinching the 2023 edition of the same tournament. However, Grupo Pachuca owns both the teams and holds stakes in Spanish side Real Oviedo and some other clubs as well.

This joint ownership violated the multi-club ownership requirements defined under Article 10, paragraph 1 of the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 Regulations outlined by FIFA.

FIFA is considering a play-off game to replace Leon

FIFA reportedly has two candidates to replace James Rodriguez's Club Leon in 2025 Club World Cup - World Soccer Talk
Olivier Giroud, LAFC striker (on the left) and Brian RodrΓguez, Club America winger (on the right).

According to different sources, FIFA is considering an unconventional approach to organize a single play-off game to determine which team would replace Club Leon in the competition.

Renowned football journalist Ben Jacobs has indicated a showdown between Club America and Los Angeles FC is on the cards, with the winner securing the coveted last place in the Group D, consisting of Chelsea, Flamengo, and Esperance.

The FIFA spokesperson stated the following on Sunday:

LAFC would participate as runner-up to Club LΓ©on in the 2023 Concacaf Champions League through which Club LΓ©on had qualified, Club AmΓ©rica would participate as the top-ranked team in the FIFA Club World Cup confederation ranking through which qualification is also determined.

The winner of the play-off would qualify unless legal proceedings rule otherwise.

The plans to commence the process of arranging a play-off will begin if Club Leon loses their appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to be reinstated to the Club World Cup.

CAS has called for a hearing on April 23 in Madrid, Spain, where Leon and Deportiva Alajuelense both will be presented the opportunity to put forward their arguments. Alajuelense had previously filed the complaint at CAS, asserting that LeΓ³n's inclusion was against FIFA regulations as they have also claimed a spot in the tournament instead.

Both clubs must submit their legal documents by April 2, prior to the hearing on the 23rd. Any announcements concerning a possible substitute will likely not be made until the legal issues are settled.

"I think it's a grave injustice": James Rodriguez expressed his disappointment

The exclusion of Club Leon has heavily affected the Mexican side's talisman player, the Colombian star James Rodriguez. The former Real Madrid and Bayern Munich midfielder did not hesitate to express his disappointment regarding this decision. He said:

I think it's a grave injustice. We all believe that. We won on the pitch. The club and the players are hurt by this. If we're out, it's not fair. The team that would replace us would be stained, and football would be stained.

So many fans have planned to travel to the tournament; how do you tell them that they can't go? I have a lot of questions about all this. It's odd. I think FIFA has to get their things together. Football is stained by this.

If we deserve it, we will be there' - Club AmΓ©rica's coach AndrΓ© Jardine discusses taking LeΓ³n's spot in the FIFA Club World Cup | Goal.com India
Andre Jardine. (Image Credit | GOAL)

ESPN revealed that when asked about qualifying for the tournament, Club AmΓ©rica head coach Andre Jardine assured his team's eagerness to earn the spot by battling on the field. According to him:

LeΓ³n should go to the Club World Cup. I'm sad for the institution, and I'd like them to find a solution so they can go,

"If it doesn't happen, then AmΓ©rica has been doing things well for a long time. It's true that they haven't yet won the Concacaf Champions Cup, which is a dream of ours and a very clear objective.

"We're leading most of the Mexican tournaments and the Concacaf ranking, which is one of the criteria. If you ask me if I want to go to the Club World Cup, of course it's true, but I'd like to go to the Club World Cup by achieving it on the field. That's what we're working towards.

However, nothing has been finalized yet, and FIFA will also have to wait until the CAS hearing is able to curve out any solutionary measure.
