Manchester United News, club favourite Edwin van der Sar has already seemingly opened the door to an Old Trafford return amid reports the Dutchman is being earmarked for a high-profile role upstairs. Van der Sar has served as CEO with Ajax for the last six years while his status at United needs no introduction.

Winning eight major trophies patrolling the sticks during his time in the UK - between 2005 and 2011  Van der Sar played 266 games under Sir Alex Ferguson and is widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers of his generation. He has, also, carved out an equally impressive reputation in the boardroom after hanging up his gloves.

Appointed as marketing director at the Johan Cruyff Arena in 2012, four years later the ex-Netherlands goalkeeper stepped up as CEO and he has remained in the job since.

Responsible for a whole range of behind-scenes business, he worked seamlessly with Erik ten Hag while his compatriot was employed as Ajax manager.

Reports over the last few days suggest Ten Hag is keen on a reunion with him as the Premier League giants opt to make further structural changes in the boardroom.

Meanwhile, given his previous work at the club, Van der Sar has an undoubted soft spot and love for all things United.

Danny Blind has, according to the same reports, even been identified to succeed him in Amsterdam.

Van der Sar was pressed on a potential return to Old Trafford three years ago. As quoted by The Express from his interview with Planet Futbol at that time, he said: "Besides my family, my wife and kids and everything, I have two loves in my life.

"That's Ajax, who gave me the opportunity to develop, they scouted me, they gave me the chance to shine in the world of football. And the last club of my career also gave me a lot of attention, recognition and everything which developed at a later stage.

"Of course, I'd be interested in a position. But I need to learn a little more here , to develop myself further, so eventually let's see what the future brings. United is a fantastic club, there's a great following all over the world. Everybody wants to play for them and, eventually, work for them."
