Upset towards the Glazer family is at an all-time high amid an underwhelming summer transfer window and a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Brighton on the opening day of the Premier League season.

Old Trafford saw unsavoury scenes on Sunday with protests reportedly causing the club shop to close and fans pictured brawling in the stands.

Now, '#EmptyOldTrafford' has started trending on Twitter as supporters prepare to boycott the North West derby with Liverpool on August 22.One wrote: "Enough is enough. #EmptyOldTrafford #GlazersOut #GlazersSellUnited"

Another said: "If you love Manchester United then stay out of Old Trafford. It is worth it lads #GlazersSellManUtd #EmptyOldTrafford"

And a third added: "My seat will be empty for the Liverpool game! Let's get this happening, the time is NOW!! #EmptyOldTrafford"

It comes 15 months after the same fixture was abandoned when hundreds of United fans stormed Old Trafford in protest against the Glazers' 17-year tenure.

Former director Michael Knighton recently revealed he is planning a hostile takeover bid to try and put fans out of their misery.

The 70-year-old, who served on United's board between 1989 and 1992, said: "Everyone knows that we need new ownership of this football club.

"That is my aim, those are my objectives."I'm making good progress, I continue to talk to the people, I've got some good pledges with good finance.

"We are now working on the offer document – remember, it's a hostile bid."

Manchester United have reportedly hit a stumble block in their efforts to sign Adrien Rabiot this summer.

The Red Devils initially agreed a £15 million fee which could rise with add-ons, but talks are stalling over the Frenchman's wage demands.

Meanwhile, United have seemingly progressed in negotiations with long-term target Frenkie de Jong after agreeing a deal with his agent.

However, Chelsea are still very much in the run-in as the Blues have sorted out terms with Barcelona.
