Under-21 Euros: Amazing XI of players, you need to know about

Under-21 Euros: Amazing XI of players, you need to know about

The Under-21 Euro Championship is about to kick off, with a host of the continent's finest young talent primed for competition in Romania and Georgia.

England will be looking to win the trophy for the first time since 1984, but a host of stacked countries will be looking to throw a spanner in the works – including holders Germany, France, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands.

We've pulled together an insane XI of talented players that are primed to take the tournament by storm.

GK: Giorgi Mamardashvili (Georgia)

Georgia are enjoying an international upswing – spearheaded by Napoli sensation Khvicha Kvaratskhelia – and the co-hosts will be represented by Valencia goalkeeper Mamardashvili this month.

The keeper has been put up for sale by his La Liga employers and there's reported interest from Manchester United and Tottenham. It'll be intriguing to see how he performs in under-21 Euro.

RB: Arnau Martinez (Spain)

Martinez has looked incredibly impressive in the last year for Girona – tidy on the ball, adept at getting it forward, secure defensively and tough to beat one-on-one.

He has even chipped in with a few goals and assists for good measure. Considering Spain's current right-back is the 85-year-old Jesus Navas, a good tournament could catapult Martinez into contention for the senior side.

CB: Taylor Harwood-Bellis (England)

Harwood-Bellis has blossomed into a fine centre-back over the last two years and that should come as no surprise considering his mentor.

The youngster has spent the last two seasons under the tutelage of Vincent Kompany, following him from Anderlecht to Burnley on loan from Manchester City on both occasions.

After a slightly shaky start to his time in Belgium, he has matured into a commanding centre-half, impressive both off and especially on the ball for the Championship winners last term. One to watch.

CB: Levi Colwill (England)

Colwill is widely considered to be the future of England's defence.

His Premier League performances this season have reportedly seen Brighton bid £40m for the defender, who is the latest product from the Chelsea academy.

But the Blues have made it clear they have no intention to sell Colwill and see him as part of their squad next season under Mauricio Pochettino.

Colwill's progression is not limited to club level; he was asked to train with the senior side before June's internationals with Malta and North Macedonia.

LB: Destiny Udogie (France)

One of Antonio Conte's trolley-dash signings last summer, Udogie has spent the 2022-23 season back at Udinese while Spurs have toiled.

"I have to thank the club so much for having invested and believed in me during these two seasons," he said after his final match for the Serie A club.

"All I want to say is thank you. I knew my qualities, I just wanted to express them and Udinese gave me this great chance. I am ready for the future and for the Premier League."

Tottenham fans will be watching his performances at the finals intently.

CM: Sandro Tonali (Italy)

A veteran (for this level) at 23, this will be the last Under-21 Euro graced by Tonali.

The midfielder was part of the Milan side that reached the Champions League semi-finals and his performances have attracted the attention of clubs from across Europe, including some in the Premier League – including Newcastle United.

Having played almost 300 career matches, Italy will look to Tonali to get them out of a tough group that includes France, Switzerland and Norway.

CM: Morgan Gibbs-White (England)

If he can replicate this, England will be laughing…

Nottingham Forest ace Morgan Gibbs-White has been singled out as the Premier League's best signing of the season by Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher.

And the former defender would like to see the Reds attacker included in the England squad for next month's Euro 2024 qualifiers

CM: Ryan Gravenberch (Netherlands)

You've definitely heard of Gravenberch's potential, his performances for Ajax in 2021-22 were incredible, but his participation in the U21 Euros is an indication of his limited game-time at Bayern Munich this season.

RW: Pedro Neto (Portugal)

A very capable Premier League performer, Neto's promising career at Wolves has been derailed by injuries.

The forward missed close to a year's worth of football with a knee injury, and not too long after making his return in 2022, he suffered another injury that derailed his World Cup dreams.

The U21 Euros are the perfect stage for Neto to remind everybody of his ability and strengthen his senior international credentials.

ST: Youssoufa Moukoko (Germany)

Moukoko was the youngest player at the 2022 World Cup – and that's not the only record the youthful striker holds.

He also holds the record for being the youngest player to appear in the Champions League and Bundesliga at just 16. It feels like he's been around forever, but he's still only 18.

And Erling Haaland says the Cameroon-born forward is already better than him when they were the same age. Yikes.

LW: Mykhailo Mudryk (Ukraine)

By far the most expensive player at the finals, Mudryk is attempting to regain his mojo following an underwhelming first six months at Chelsea.

The forward has shown glimpses of his undoubted talent, but the chaos at Stamford Bridge wasn't conducive to bringing out the best in somebody that's made less than 100 senior appearances.

Pochettino will be watching on the under-21 Euro with interest.

Italy vs England: English fans charged at by police and struck with batons before win over Italy in Naples

During Italy vs England, BBC footage appeared to show police pushing back against England supporters as they attempted to make their way to the ground for the Euro 2024 qualifier.

One man was pictured on the floor following a charge by the police.

"They hit him with a shield and with a baton," Vince Hankinson told BBC Sport.

"He fell to the ground holding his head and they just left him there while everybody else trampled over him. The police came didn't really assist him at all.

"We arrived at the stadium after a ridiculous hour-and-a-half journey on the bus, which was supposed to be a quick 20-minute drive."

Another England fan, Joshua Ray, said he was "scared for my safety" and the travelling supporters were not informed what the police wanted them to do.

"We all went and did the checks, no problem. Everybody had their IDs, we came here, I presume it was just a queue, but for some reason they are not letting anybody in," Ray said.

"We think maybe they're letting us in, but no communication and then all of a sudden they just charged forward and knocked a load of people over. I saw one guy go down. Nothing has been communicated."

An England fan earlier had their ticket cancelled by the Football Association after travelling to Naples with an offensive banner about Diego Maradona.

Italy vs England was played at Napoli's stadium which was named after the Argentina legend, who died aged 60 in 2020.

An FA spokesperson "strongly condemned" the individual, saying the flag included a "highly offensive message".

"We immediately took steps to have their ticket cancelled before the match," a statement added.

Maradona, one of the greatest footballers of all time, famously scored his 'Hand of God' goal against England in the 1986 World Cup. He played 257 times and won two league titles at Napoli.

Italy vs England resulted in a Three Lions victory on Italian soil since 1961, with Harry Kane becoming the nation's all-time record goalscorer in the 2-1 win.

Sportz Point Awards 2022 | Female Footballer of the Year: Beth Mead

Player of the tournament at UEFA Women's Euro 2022, Beth Mead is Sportz Point's choice for Female Footballer of the Year for 2022

Dec 29, 2022, 6:39 AM3 min read

The top scorer and player of the tournament at UEFA Women's Euro 2022, Arsenal's Beth Mead is Sportz Point's choice for Female Footballer of the Year for 2022, with Sam Kerr and Alexia Putellas just misiing out.

Beth Mead finished ahead of the top scorer in the Barclays Women's Super League, Mead also scored six goals at UEFA Women's Euro 2022 finishing as top scorer.

She has had a tremendous year, clicking into top gear just after the hurt of missing out on the squad for the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and both her scoring and assists record for Arsenal set up what was an incredible summer for the now fearless winger.

Mead has enjoyed a glorious year playing for the Lionesses, who won their first-ever international trophy this summer defeating Germany at Wembley Stadium in the UEFA Women's Euro Final. Mead was the top scorer in the finals and voted as the Player of the Tournament.

Her six goals in July meant she had scored 20 international goals in the 2021/22 season, smashing a 61-year old England record held by the legendary Jimmy Greaves, who scored 13 international goals during the 1961/62 campaign.

The forward scored 12 goals and produced 12 assists in Wiegman's first ten games in charge and was part of the squad who lifted the inaugural Arnold Clark Cup in February 2022.

This season, she has picked up where she left off in the summer, with three goals and three assists in the opening matches of the Barclays Women's Super League and two goals in Arsenal's 5-1 annihilation of European champions Lyon on their own ground.

Her club boss, Jonas Eidevall heaped praise on her last month. "Looking back, she of course had a very strong season, both at club and international level. I think she has started this season in a very good way as well, which shows that it's not form, it's consistency. It's her ability to perform at this level, which is so important, to have players like that."

Beth Mead has been crowned the BBC Sports Personality of the Year for 2022 after firing England to a history-making European Championship that propelled women's football into the mainstream.

The 27-year-old saw off competition from Ben Stokes and Ronnie O'Sullivan to win the prize, hobbling on to the stage at MediaCity in Salford to collect the award after seriously injuring her knee last month.

Beth Mead said she was "speechless for once" and held back tears as she thanked her mother, who is receiving treatment for cancer, and received a standing ovation from the sporting stars in the crowd.

She started the new season in good goalscoring form, but an ACL injury last month will sideline her for a chunk of 2023.
