Netherlands vs Argentina: Match Preview:

A rematch of the 2014 World Cup semifinal sees the Netherlands look to get revenge for elimination as they take on Lionel Messi and Argentina in the quarterfinals of this year's tournament.

Messi scored his penalty in that 2014 shootout alongside three teammates, helping his team to reach the final, while Ron Vlaar and Wesley Sneijder missed to leave the Dutch relegated to the third-place match.

While Messi fell short in that 2014 final to Germany, he'll have visions of grandeur at this year's tournament. It will be a difficult road, as he'll first have to get by a Dutch side that's gone 19 matches unbeaten across all competitions and 11 unbeaten in the World Cup.

Louis van Gaal has confirmed he will depart the Netherlands job at the end of their tournament run, and he'll be hoping his duties don't quite come to an end just yet.

Team News:

Netherlands:

Van Gaal is expected to have a fully fit roster at his disposal for his second World Cup quarter-final as a manager.

Steven Bergwijn replaced Davy Klaassen at half-time of the second-round victory over the US, giving the Netherlands a fleet-footed front three. However, that was only once the Dutch were already 2-0 up and could exclusively play on the counter.

Argentina:

Alejandro Gomez was forced off within five minutes of the second half of Argentina's victory over Australia last weekend with an ankle injury. Angel Di Maria missed the tie completely while nursing a thigh problem and is building his way back to fitness.

Lionel Scaloni replaced Gomez with Lisandro Martinez to form a back-three for the final 40 minutes against Australia and may be tempted to turn to a system he scarcely uses because of the Dutch preference for a 3-4-1-2.

Netherlands vs Argentina: Head to Head:

The Netherlands have a slight edge over Argentina and have won four out of the nine matches played between the two teams, as opposed to Argentina's three victories.

This is the seventh meeting between Argentina and the Netherlands in the FIFA World Cup - the third-most frequently played fixture in the history of the competition.

Predicted Line-ups:

Netherlands Starting 11 (3-4-1-2): Noppert; Timber, Van Dijk, Ake; Dumfries, De Roon, F De Jong, Blind; Klaassen; Gakpo, Depay.
