The new season of the Premier League have kicked off on the 15th of August and we have tried to create a Premier League Matchday 1 overview in order to give you the summary of what happened on the first week of the 2023-24 season.
Burnley vs Man City (0-3)
In the first match of the 2023-24 season Pep Guardiola's Manchester City faced Vincent Kompany coached Burnley. Manchester City's Erling Haaland opened the scoring just under five minutes started the Citizen's title defense.
The previous year's golden boot winner scored again, against the run of play in the 36th minute and after that Burnley lost total control of the match. In the 75th minute of the match, Rodri scored City's third goal and made it impossible for newly promoted Burnley to make a comeback.
Arsenal vs Nottingham Forest (2-1)
Arsenal's 2023-24 campaign started at the Emirates where they hosted Nottingham Forest. The Gunners dominated most of the game and opened the scoring through Eddie Nketiah's right footed shot in the 26th minute.
Bukayo Saka doubled Arsenal's lead just past the half hour mark with a wonderful left footed curling strike from outside the box. Nottingham Forest couldn't really get going in the whole match but they still managed to sneak one goal in, in the 82nd minute, thanks to Taiwo Awoniy and denied Arsenal the clean sheet.
Sheffield United vs Crystal Palace (0-1)
The newly promoted Sheffield United faced Crystal Palace in Premier League Matchday 1. Although they weren't favorites to win the game yet they were expected to put up a fight in front of their home fans, which they did.
The match ended up in favor of Crystal Palace, thanks to Odsonne Edouard's early second half strike which made the scoreline 1-0 and it stayed that way until the final whistle blew.
Bournemouth vs West Ham (1-1)
The European Conference League winners, West Ham United went to Bournemouth's Vitality Stadium in order to start their 2024 campaign. Both the teams finished in the bottom half of the table in the previous season so they were looking for a positive result to kick start their campaign.
In the second half around the 50 minute mark Jared Bowen's amazing strike gave West Ham the much anticipated lead but in the 82nd minute of the match Bournemouth equalised through Dominic Solanke. The points were shared as the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
Brighton vs Luton Town (4-1)
Brighton hosted newly promoted Luton Town to start off their Premier League campaign. They were the obvious favorites with De Zerbi leading the side.
Solly March opened the scoring for Brighton in the 36th minute. Joao Pedro doubled the lead from the spot in the 71st minute. Carlton Morris did pull one back in the 81st minute and recorded Luton Town's first ever Premier League goal. But Brighton didn't take their foot off the accelerator and scored two more goals at the end of the match and made it 4-1.
Everton vs Fulham (0-1)
In Premier League Matchday 1 Everton was scheduled to play Fulham at Goodison Park. Everton having avoided relegation last season was looking to start the campaign well against an overachieving Fulham side of the previous year.
Everton controlled most of the game and experienced some great goal scoring chances but it was Fulham who took the lead in the 73rd minute against the run of play, with the help of Bobby De Cordova-Reid's strike. That was the only goal which separated the two teams and gained Fulham an important three point in their opening game.
Newcastle United vs Aston Villa (5-1)
Newcastle vs Aston Villa was expected to be a fairly competitive match as both the teams have qualified for European competitions after such a long time and made some great additions in the summer. Both the teams are no longer valued as a middle table club so this year they would have so much to prove.
Under 10 minutes, Newcastle's new signing Sandro Tonali opened the scoring for the Magpies. Moussa Diaby equalized in the 11th minute, also one of the other debutantes in the match. After that it was all Newcastle. Alexander Isak scored two goals on 16th and 58th minute, Callum Wilson registered his name on the scoresheet on the 77th minute as a substitute and in the end, Harvey Barnes, the ex-Leichester City player made it 5-1. It was an amazing start to the season for the Magpies but we couldn't say the same about Aston Villa.
Brentford vs Tottenham (2-2)
Brentford vs Tottenham was another exciting fixture. The one thing that the two teams have in common is, they both lost their No. 9s, Tottenham, permanently and Brentford, for a few months. But they were still looking to fancy their chances of winning the first game of the season.
As the scoreline suggests, the match was super competitive. Cristian Romero scored the opening goal for Tottenham from a James Madison freekick in the 11th minute of the game. But the lead was cancelled out with a penalty by Bryan Mbeumo. Through Yoane Wissa Brentford turned things around and took the lead in the 36th minute but in the 45th minute Emerson Royale scored an out of the box banger to make the score 2-2. It stayed like that till the end of game and the points were shared between the teams.
Chelsea vs Liverpool
Chelsea vs Liverpool was the most talked about clash in Premier League Matchday 1. As both the teams underperformed in the previous season, there was a lot of pressure on the players to deliver and fortunately they didn't disappoint.
The game ended in a draw, which has been the case for quite a few matches now. But there was a lot of positives for both the teams. Liverpool opened the scoring through some slick passing in the 18th minute of the game with the help Luiz Diaz but the goal was cut short by Premier League debutant, Axel Disasi. Both the teams got two of their goals overturned so overall it was an evenly poised contest.
Manchester United vs Wolves
The last match of Premier League Matchday 1 was played between Manchester United and Wolves at the "Theater of Dreams", Old Trafford. Manchester United were looking to start strong against a somewhat broken Wolves team but under Gary O'Neil, Wolverhampton Wanderers weren't going to give up easily.
The match was nothing like we expected, Wolves played equally well as Manchester United in every possible way except they just lacked the finishing. Raphael Varane scored a scrappy goal in the 76th minute of the match and Wolves didn't get any opportunity of equalizing it until the very last second of the match where they were denied a "blatant" penalty.
