Premier League: Ranking every Club by their net spend in summer 2022

The usual suspects in the 'big six' – Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham and Chelsea dominated in terms of paying big-money fees within the Premier League

The likes of Erling Haaland, Darwin Nunez, Casemiro, Antony, Raheem Sterling, Wesley Fofana, Gabriel Jesus, and Richarlison moved to or between English football's biggest clubs for considerable dosh.

But there was quite a discrepancy between how the clubs at the top approached the market.

Chelsea, with new president Todd Boehly at the helm, made a number of eye-catching moves and spent more than any other side in Europe with an outlay to the tune of £251million. The likes of Timo Werner, Emerson and Billy Gilmour were sold for fees, but the Blues only recouped a fraction of what they spent and were the highest net spenders.

Manchester United aren't far behind, having also spent north of £200million on backing Erik ten Hag in a bid to give the new boss a squad capable of getting back into the Champions League. The only money they made back was through the sale of forgotten man Andreas Pereira for a low fee to Fulham.

West Ham and newly-promoted splurgers Nottingham Forest are surprise inclusions in the top five, with newly-minted Newcastle United – who failed to offload a single player for a transfer fee – ahead of Arsenal and Tottenham, who each ambitiously spent over £100million.

Liverpool spent big on new striker Nunez, but their net spend was negligible, having brought in almost as much on the sales of Sadio Mane, Neco Williams, Takumi Minamino, Ben Davies and Marko Grujic.

The champions Manchester City, meanwhile, were one of three clubs – alongside Brighton and Leicester City – to turn a profit. It was a busy summer rebuild for Pep Guardiola, with over £100million spent on Haaland, Kalvin Phillips, Manuel Akanji and Sergio Gomez, but considerably more recouped on selling Jesus, Sterling and Oleksandr Zinchenko to their big-six rivals – plus a handful of highly-rated youngsters to Southampton.

Despite taking the lead two times throughout the game, Brighton hold Manchester City in a 2-2 stalemate at home.

Erling Haaland drew the first blood from the spot, which was canceled out only ten minutes later, through a blistering free-kick by Pervis Estupinan. Right before the break, Omar Marmoush produced a lightning strike, which put City ahead at the break. However, Brighton equalized only three minutes into the second half, as Hinshelwood's strike forced Khusanov to fire it into his own net.
