The USA will return home without a FIFA Women's World Cup medal for the first time in their history after losing on penalties to Sweden in Sweden vs USA last-16 tie in Melbourne. Lina Hurtig's spot-kick sent Sweden to the quarter-finals, helped significantly by the brilliance of Zecira Musovic between the sticks. It is the first time in the tournament's history that the USA have been eliminated at this early stage. Vlatko Andonovski's side received criticism for lackluster performances against the Netherlands and Portugal. In Melbourne, they looked much improved but could not control the game and as a result, they are returning home with empty hands.

Sweden were behind in the penalties after Nathalie missed from the spot. Then came the turning point as Megan Rapinoe and Sophia Smith both missed from the spot for the USA. In the sudden death, Kelley O'Hara missed and Lina scored although it was a good save by Naeher, she lost control of the ball and it went past the goal line. It was written in the stars for the Swedish players and now they are through to the last 8. Sweden will play Japan in the quarter-final. They will need to do much better in open play because Japan will most definitely convert some chances.
