The Indian Men's hockey team will open its Hangzhou Asian Games 2023 campaign against Uzbekistan in Pool A on September 24. The Indian women's hockey team will take on Singapore in its opening game of Pool A on September 27. For the 12-team men's competition, India are in Pool A with reigning Asian Games champions Japan, arch-rivals Pakistan, neighbors Bangladesh, Singapore, and Uzbekistan. Men's Pool B features the Republic of Korea, Malaysia, the People's Republic of China, Oman, Thailand and Indonesia. Teams in both pools will face each other in a single-headed round-robin format with the top two from each pool making the semi-finals. The remaining teams will have to play classification matches.

The India vs Pakistan fixture at the Asian Games 2023 is scheduled for September 30. The Indian men are two-time Asian Games champions while Pakistan have won the gold medal at the Asian Games a record eight times.
The Indian women's hockey team won the silver medal at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta. They are in Pool A along with Korea, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Reigning champions Japan, along with hosts China, Thailand, Kazakhstan, and Indonesia are the other teams in the competition and are placed in Pool B. The 10-team women's tournament at the 2023 Hangzhou Games will follow a similar format to the men's competition.
