India is hosting the 15th edition of the Men’s Hockey World Cup. They are hosting the Hockey World Cup 2023 for the second time in a row. Four years ago in 2018, India hosted the Hockey World Cup, and at that time they organized all the matches in Bhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha.
The opening ceremony of the 15th Hockey World Cup has been done and the matches have started from the 13th of January. 16 teams are participating in the Hockey World Cup 20023, which are placed in four different pools. The winning team of each group will directly reach the quarter-finals, while the second and third-ranked teams will be able to reach the quarter-finals through cross-over matches. Overall, a total of 16 teams will play 44 matches in the next 17 days. On January 29, the world of hockey will get its new king.
Meanwhile, India, the hosts will be looking to end their 47-year trophy drought. While defending champions Belgium would want to add to their tally. India have shown great consistency in recent years managing to win Bronze and Silver in the Tokyo Olympics and Birmingham CWG.
Among the other heavyweights, Australia, the most successful team in the history of the tournament will also be there. The kookaburras have secured 10 medals in the event, three of which are championships. Australia has been the nemesis of the hosts, with India managing just 10 wins in 65 matches since the turn of the millennium.
Moreover, Fallen giants, Pakistan, who won the competition 4 times have not even qualified for this installment after their dismal performance in 2018.
