United World Wrestling (UWW) announced on Tuesday that the Asian Wrestling Championships 2023 will be held in New Delhi from March 28 to April 2. India will be hosting the Asian Wrestling Championships for the ninth time.

The events will include men's freestyle, women's freestyle, and men's Greco-Roman divisions. Wrestlers will receive ranking points from this, which will help to determine their seeding for the September World Championships. Five quota places for each of the 18 weight categories at the Paris 2024 Olympics will be available at the World Championships, which are planned to take place in Belgrade, Serbia, from September 16 to 24.

Moreover, the Asian Wrestling Championships 2023 will be the 36th time in New Delhi. This will be the seventh annual gathering of the Indian capital. Jalandhar served as the host city for the 1979 Asian Wrestling Championships. Mumbai also hosted it once in 1987.

Earlier, Indian wrestlers earned 17 medals in the most recent Asian Championships in Mongolia last year, including one gold, five silver, and eleven bronze. Ravi Kumar Dahiya, who finished second in the Tokyo 2020 event, claimed the only gold medal for India. While third-placed Bajrang Punia had to settle for a silver. Japan leads the medal tally with 21 medals including 10 gold medals. Iran finished second with 17 medals, 10 of which were gold.

The UWW also decided the host cities for the four ranking series tournaments apart from designating India as the venue for the Asian Championships. The first and second events will take place in Zagreb and Cairo in February respectively. While the third and fourth events will take place in June and July in Bishkek and Budapest.
