UEFA Champions League, the most prestigious club football tournament in Europe, or you can say in the World, is a target for every team when they start a season. It is no different for the English Premier League teams as well. Along with the battle for the title, teams always fight among themselves to finish in the top four or five for a Champions League spot. So, as we go near the end of another exciting English Premier League season, we bring you the list of English teams with the most Champions League appearances.

How many Premier League teams can qualify for the UEFA Champions League?

Well, before we talk about the English teams with the most Champions League appearances, we need to let you know about the criteria for earning a spot in the tournament.

Before the new format of the UEFA Champions League came, only the top four teams from the Premier League used to qualify for the next season’s tournament. But before 1997, only the League champion used to enter the European Cup competition.

From 1997 to 2024, four teams from the Premier League got automatic qualification, except for 2005, when Liverpool, who were the defending Champions League winners, were allowed to enter the competition despite finishing fifth in the league in the previous season. Only that season, five English clubs played in the Champions League.

After the expansion of the tournament in the 2024/25 season, new rules were applied, which now allow nearly seven teams to qualify for the Champions League. As per the rules, the two top teams from the best two leagues per UEFA Rankings receive an extra "European Performance Spot."

Since the English Premier League is the No. 1-ranked league in Europe by UEFA Rankings, they get an extra fifth spot.

Not only that, if the Champions League winners and Europa League winners are both from the Premier League and both finish outside the top five, then teams finishing sixth and seventh get included in the roster for the next season’s premier European competition.

Now, let’s get into the main topic. To answer your question first, Liverpool FC, with 25 seasons in the European competition, holds the record for most appearances by an English Club. But who follows them, and when did all of them qualify? We will know all of that now.

Please note that these stats include the European Cup and Champions League eras together.

#5. Manchester City | 16 seasons

Manchester City, one of the most dominant forces of European football in recent history, has only managed to play 16 seasons of Champions League football in their history. The Citizens played their first season of European Cup football in the 1968-69 season when they arrived at the competition as the champions of the English Football League.

Although City were invited to replace Manchester United in the 1958 season when the Munich air disaster happened, and eight of Manchester United's players lost their lives, City rejected the invitation, and they had to wait nearly a decade to play their first European Cup season. Although under an overconfident coach, Malcolm Allison, they were eliminated from the first round.

The 1980s and 1990s were the toughest period for the club as they once dropped to the third division of the English football league. That means that they had to wait until the 2011/12 season to return to the Champions League. But they faced an early first-round exit.

Since then, they have qualified for the Champions League for 15 consecutive seasons and also went on to win the title in the 2023 season by defeating Inter Milan and completed a historic treble

They were also the runners-up in the 2020/21 season when they were beaten by Chelsea in the final.

#4. Chelsea | 20 seasons

Chelsea FC, the team from West London, has appeared in the Champions League 20 times in its history. The two-time Champions (2012, 2021) were invited to play in the inaugural season of the tournament after being crowned the English Champions in the 1954/55 season. But since they wanted only to focus on the domestic season, they declined the invitation.

Then they had to wait till the 1999/2000 season to make their Champions League debut and went on to play the quarter-finals, where they were beaten by FC Barcelona. Their next season arrived in 2003/04, where they played the semi-finals against AS Monaco and lost. They followed it up with another semi-final appearance in the next season as well, where they were beaten by Liverpool FC.

From 2004 to 2009 Chelsa played four semi-finals and one final in 2008, where they lost to Manchester United.

They lifted the trophy in 2012 by beating Bayern Munich in the final and becoming the only team from London to win the Champions League till now. They repeated the feat in 2021 by going past Manchester City in the final.

Apart from the 2016/17, 2018/19, 2023/24, and 2024/25 seasons, Chelsea have played Champions League football every season since 2003/04.

Not to forget, they are the first and only club to win all five major UEFA men's club competitions (Champions League, Europa League, Cup Winners' Cup, Super Cup, and Conference League).

Chelsea’s London neighbours, Arsenal, are the English team with the third most Champions League appearances. Unfortunately, they are also the English team with the most Champions League seasons without ever winning the tournament.

Arsenal first entered the tournament as the Champions of England in the 1971/72 season and went on to play the quarter-finals against Ajax. Their next European Cup entry was two decades later as they bowed out of the tournament in the second round.

They again played in the 1998/99 and 1999/2000 seasons but could not get past the first round. In the 2000/01 season, they again played the quarter-finals but lost to Valencia.

They reached their maiden final five seasons later when they were beaten narrowly by FC Barcelona. In the 2008/09 season, they played semi-finals but faced a hard defeat by Manchester United. Since then, Arsenal had to wait for 16 years to reach the final four again when they qualified for the semis in 2024/25 but lost to PSG.

Arsenal did not qualify for the Champions League football for six consecutive seasons from 2016/17 to 2022/23.

This season, they have made it to the final four in successive seasons for the first time after beating Sporting CP in the quarter-finals. They will face Atletico Madrid in the semis.

#2. Liverpool FC | 29 seasons

Liverpool FC is the most successful English club in Champions League history and has played the second most seasons by any Premier League team. The Reds won six European Cups/Champions League titles (1977, 1978, 1981, 1984, 2005, 2019) in their history and played 29 seasons at the top tier of European football.

Liverpool played their first season of European Cup football in the 1964/65 season and reached the semi-finals. However, it was the 1970s that gave them their best era when they played two back-to-back finals in 1977 and 1978. Not only that, they went on to win the title on both occasions under legendary coach  Bob Paisley.

Paisley then went on to become the first and only British manager to win three European Cup titles when he led the team to success in 1981.

Liverpool again were crowned the champions of Europe when they won the title in 1984 under the coach Joe Fagan. Liverpool had not played any Champions League football in the whole 1990s decade, and they had to wait for another 21 seasons to lift the title when Steven Gerrard’s men did the Miracle of Istanbul to stun AC Milan in one of the greatest Champions League finals ever. But Milan took the revenge by beating them in the 2007 final.

It wasn't until Jurgen Klopp took the helm at Anfield that Liverpool brought their glory days back by playing consecutive Champions League finals in 2018 and 2019. In 2019, they went on to win their sixth Champions League title by beating Tottenham Hotspur in the final.

The Red Devils of Manchester are the English team with the most Champions League appearances, as they have played 32 seasons in the competition. Not only that, they were the first English team to participate in the European Cup when they entered the tournament in the 1956/57 season.

United were beaten by Real Madrid in that season in the semi-finals.

After two semi-final defeats in 1958 and 1966, they finally played the final in 1968 and defeated Benfica to lift their maiden European Cup title.

After the retirement of Sir Matt Busby, United did not feature in the tournament in the 1970s and 1980s. They returned to the Champions League in 1993/94 after winning the Premier League the previous season, as the world saw the start of Sir Alex Ferguson's era.

In 1999, they played their first Champions League final in 31 years and lifted the title by beating FC Bayern Munich. Their third and final title came in the 2007/08 season when a masterclass from Edwin van der Sar helped them beat Chelsea in penalties.

They went on to play the final in the next season as well, but were defeated by Pep Guardiola’s FC Barcelona. United went on to lose another final against FC Barcelona in the 2010/11 season.

Since then, they missed the Champions League in 2014/15, 2016/17, 2019/20, 2022/23, 2024/25 and 2025/26 seasons, going through one of the lowest periods of their history.
