The Australian team has suffered another injury setback after all-rounder Glenn Maxwell was on the receiving end of a freak accident during a birthday bash in Melbourne. The Aussie cricketer is suspected to be out for the entirety of the Australian cricketing summer after fracturing his left fibula and needing surgery. He has been ruled out of Australia's upcoming ODI series against England, commencing next week.

Australia's Glenn Maxwell had an underwhelming T20 World Cup campaign. The Aussies' title defense ended in disappointment on their home soil. But the all-rounder was hoping to make an impact in the upcoming ODI series against rivals England, only to succumb to a freak accident. Maxwell reportedly slipped while running during a friend's birthday party in Melbourne.

"Glenn is in good spirits It was an unfortunate accident and we feel for Glenn in the circumstances given he was in great touch in his last few games. Glenn is a critical part of our white ball structure. We will continue to support him through his recovery and rehabilitation."

Australia's selection chief George Bailey said

The influential cricketer underwent surgery after his injury, ruling him out of action for a lengthy period of time. Australian pacer Sean Abbott has been announced as Maxwell's replacement for the ODI series.

Pat Cummins will be leading the Australian side for his first assignment as the white-ball skipper. Earlier, Aaron Finch announced his retirement from ODIs in the lead-up to the T20 World Cup.
