Despite his recent doubles triumph at the Australian Open, Nick Kyrgios has been omitted from Australia's Davis Cup 2022 team. Although his partner Thanasi Kokkinakis has been picked by captain Lleyton Hewitt. Last week, Kokkinakis and Kyrgios won their maiden grand slam title by winning the men's doubles crown at the Australian Open. However, Kyrgios' performance was not adequate to earn him a position in the Australian Davis Cup 2022 team.

For the March 4-5 encounter in Sydney, team captain Lleyton Hewitt has chosen rookie Luke Saville, Thanasi Kokkinakis. Doubles specialist John Peers, Australian No.1 Alex de Minaur, and Alexei Popyrin are also a part of the team. However, Hewitt believes his team has enough firepower to equal the Hungarians.

The team captain's reaction

However, in the team captain Lleyton Hewitt's words, "Alex has had most of his recent success in Sydney, winning the Sydney international a few years back. But also some of his best results last month, including quality wins against (Matteo) Berrettini and (Ugo) Humbert. Thanasi had a fantastic Australian summer. He really cemented himself as a top-100 player again, winning his first title at home in Adelaide and beating quality players. And then to go on to win the Australian Open doubles, this is going to give him a lot of confidence heading into this tie."

"Popyrin got an opportunity to play a big Davis Cup match in the finals last year. He has a lot of firepowers out there. A lot of weapons as well and certainly an option for singles or doubles."

"John Peers has been a regular in the Davis Cup team for a number of years now, he's a top 15 doubles player. He won the Sydney Tennis Classic a couple of weeks ago and played exceptionally well with Luke Saville at the ATP Cup last month. Also, Luke gets his first opportunity to represent Australia at Davis Cup. It's something he has worked extremely hard for, and I couldn't be prouder of him to get this opportunity and being able to present him with a gold jacket and his number," Hewitt added further.

Hungary have announced Fucsovics, Zsombor Piros, Fabian Marozsan, Mate Valkusz and Peter Fajta in their team. Captain Zoltan Nagy will be their leader.

On March 4-5, the Aussies will face Hungary. The Australian team will be led by World No. 39 Marton Fuscovics. Last November, the two teams clashed in the round-robin phase of the Davis Cup Finals on hardcourt in Turin, Italy. Whereas, the Australians achieved a 2-1 triumph.

The US Tennis Association announced Kyrgios' withdrawal along with Germany's Jan-Lennard Struff. The association has not gave specific reason immediately for his absence. The US Open 2023 starts on 28 August. The brackets will be determined on Aug. 24.

At the U.S. Open a year ago, Kyrgios made his deepest run at Flushing Meadows by making it to the quarterfinals. He eliminated reigning champion and No. 1-seeded Daniil Medvedev in the fourth round, before losing in five sets to Karen Khachanov.

Nick Kyrgios has only played one official singles match all season, in Stuttgart, Germany, in June, which he lost. Shortly thereafter, he withdrew from Wimbledon 2023, citing a wrist injury. Earlier, the 28-year-old had missed the Australian Open in early 2023 due to a left knee injury, after which he underwent arthroscopic knee surgery. After that, he also missed the French Open. Kyrgios's ATP ranking has declined due to his continuous absence from tennis and he is currently holding No. 92 ranking.

Meanwhile, two Argentine players Facundo Diaz Acosta and Diego Schwartzman can replace him in the US Open 2023.

Nick Kyrgios announced his withdrawal from the prestigious Grand Slam tournament on social media.
In a statement on Sunday, Kyrgios said, "I'm really sad to say that I have to withdraw from Wimbledon this year. During my comeback, I experienced some pain in my wrist during Mallorca. As a precaution I had it scanned and it came back showing a torn ligament in my wrist. I tried everything to be able to play and I am disappointed to say that I just didn't have enough time to manage it before Wimbledon."

Nick Kyrgios was runner-up at Wimbledon last year. This year he has missed two major Grand Slam events, the Australian Open and the French Open, due to injuries. In addition, he missed his home Grand Slam earlier this year due to a knee injury in January. Nick Kyrgios didn't play the French Open from May to June this year due to a foot injury.

"I still think there's some question marks, for sure. I look at my preparations last year coming in — I probably had the most ideal preparation possible. It couldn't be any (more) different this year. I've been hitting with some really good players this week and my body is feeling OK. I'm going to take it one day at a time. I'm just going to try to do everything I can, prepare, go out there and play some good tennis." Nick Kyrgios further added.

Nick Kyrgios' not playing in the Australian Open 2023 is a big blow for him. Because as a host, his chances of winning in this tournament were high. After 1976, no player from Australia has won this tournament. Talking about Wimbledon last year, he has been the runner-up. Novak Djokovic defeated Kyrgios in that match 4–6, 6–3, 6–4, 7–6 (7–3).

Kyrgios was seeded 19th in Melbourne and was scheduled to face Roman Safiullin in the first round on Tuesday. He announced this just a day before his first match. When Nick was sharing this information, he was accompanied by his physiotherapist Will Maher. He said "I'm just exhausted from everything. Obviously pretty brutal," Kyrgios explained of the decision to pull out. "One of the most important tournaments of my career. Hasn't been easy at all."

"Obviously last year winning the title in doubles and playing the best tennis of my life probably. Then going into this event as one of the favorites, it's brutal."

Kyrgios added.

Kyrgios is as mercurial a character as there is in tennis, known for alternating sometimes-brilliant and sometimes-uninterested play, as well as mixing in the occasional outlandish outburst during matches. He has spoken frankly about dealing with mental health issues. Kyrgios also has been facing a charge of assault in a pending court case in his hometown of Canberra.

Maher said that an MRI exam after Kyrgios felt discomfort in his knee revealed a cyst and a small tear in the lateral meniscus ligament. The trainer said the problem is "not career-threatening," and that Kyrgios should be able to return to competition by the hard-court tournament at Indian Wells, California, in March.

Cilic came back after losing the first set in the second set but was trailing 1–4 at one point in the deciding set tiebreaker. It was here that Cilic put his experience to use, winning 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (5) to give Croatia an unassailable 2-0 lead over Spain. The match lasted three hours and 13 minutes.

Earlier, Borna Coric had given Croatia the lead by upset Roberto Bautista Agut 6-4, 7-6(4) in the first singles match. This is Croatia's first win over Spain in Davis Cup. He will face Australia in the semi-finals.

Cilic, 34, who made his Davis Cup debut back in 2006, dropped the first set, gave up a break in the decider and was 1/4 down in the tiebreak before triumphing after three hours and 13 minutes on court.

His 20 aces helped alleviate the damage caused by 15 double faults as the 10,000-strong home crowd at the Palacio de Deportes was stunned into silence by Croatia who were runners-up to Russia in the 2021 final.
